It is a plant based diet based on Daniel 1
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank...Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink...

Or a 3 week version on Daniel 10
In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three whole weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine into my mouth...
The Lenten seasons are based also around this diet. So Eastern Orthodox will fast from meat and dairy during Lent, Advent, and two shorter periods in June and August as well as most Wednesdays (when Judas made the deal with the Sanhedrin) and Fridays (when Jesus was crucified).
