Plastic cutlery, cheap food, worn-out reception halls (or weddings in someone's backyard)...
I have to wonder - what is it about western people and cheap weddings - ugh!
It's case-by-case, such as a backyard wedding wherein the "backyard" is 10 acres on a scenic lake, allowing for a picturesque wedding that doesn't cost a lot.
That being said, many people go for lower-cost options due to a mix of "modesty" and "financial means".
For example, some years ago a relative of mine got married. Because my relative is from here in Texas and his wife's family hails from another state, two receptions were planned, one in each location.
Her family spared no expense on the fanciest event they could muster, and since her father was an alumnus of a local university he was able to secure one of the university's event facilities, complete with high-end catering and whatnot. It was suit and tie - level formal, and the whole atmosphere was about as stiff as the ankle I'd injured rough-housing with some kin on my side of the family.
The reception we put on was held at church, and was a casual affair meant to resemble a community gathering. Cookies, cake, soda, pizza (which the groom specifically requested as part of a long-running joke), and so on. The whole affair was genuinely casual, and everyone was allowed to get to know one another at a greatly relaxed pace.
While the first reception was a show of power from the wife's side of the family, the second reception ended up actually being about community and the union of a new family.
