From the "Good on ya", files: Gov. DeSantis to Take Executive Emergency Action Against Vaccine Passports

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a press conference on March 29 that he will take emergency executive action shortly against the concept of Americans needing a vaccine passport to be able to travel domestically and internationally.
...
He also urged the state legislature to take more permanent action

At this point DeSantis should just take a gun and walk around shooting people. He just cares about business and money and doesn't care about peoples lives at all.

I live in south Florida (I'm a Canadian - not Florida Man), and have to listen to this moron on the news all the time. He's not quite as much of an ignorant pompous buffoon as his idol Trump but he's trying hard to catch up.

You won't have any choice about international travel. Countries that get the pandemic under control won't want Americans arriving and spreading disease.

"domestically and internationally"? What power exactly does the Governor of Florida have to determine who gets to fly internationally? Or domestically for that matter if its to locations outside his state?

He gets to take the matter to the Supreme Court if state law conflicts with federal mandates.

Why are conservatives afraid of bar codes? All of us who have had vaccines of any kind have the little yellow paper booklet. But apparently if we have a bar code on our phone instead of the little booklet it's some kind of a left-wing plot to do something or other. I don't get it.

Last week, DeSantis criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for announcing that a no-sail order on cruise ships would remain in place until Nov. 1.

On March 26, the governor sat down with state officials to discuss the importance of the industry, calling the order “baseless.”

During the meeting, DeSantis asked the CDC to reverse the no-sail order that’s been in place since March 14, 2020.

“If there is one thing we’ve learned over the past year, it’s that lockdowns don’t work, and Floridians deserve the right to earn a living,” said DeSantis. “The cruise industry is essential to our state’s economy, and keeping it shut down until November would be devastating to the men and women who rely on the cruise lines to provide for themselves and their families. I urge the CDC to immediately rescind this baseless no-sail order to allow Floridians in this industry to get back to work.”

Why does DeSantis want to create plague ships? Is this a vote winner in Florida?

Last I checked, international travel was part of the federal jurisdiction not a state one. Are you aware of any legal precedent where a state has successfully persuaded SCOTUS to place its state legislation on the subject above federal law?

Why a passport, or QR code? Why not an armband, or just a stamp on the forehead?

My point was, we already have and use the passport, a paper record of our vaccinations. Converting from paper documents (like airplane boarding passes) to a scanable barcode on a phone is something we already do. Why is converting from a paper vaccination record to a barcode such a scary deal for you?

I've already got my vaccine passport.

I don't feel the need to provide any more information, certainly not to a database controlled by politically active individuals.

The database exists already. The only question on the table is why you resist the barcode access to it which would make it easier for you to use?

If that's the case then there's no need for me to carry around a QR code, is there?

Thanks for making my argument for me.

Not if you don't want to, I suppose. But why don't you want to?

What do you do about your other vaccinations when you travel? You carry around the little yellow paper booklet. Would you object to that being changed to bar-code access without the Covid shot?

See, what I am trying to find out is if your objection to the QR code is substantive that I should take heed of it as well? Or just magical thinking.

DeSantis' state depends on tourism. If it becomes and remains the COVID hot spot of the country people will avoid it. New, stronger and more contagious strains are coming along, and the unvaccinated and unmasked (usually the same people) will be the prime targets.

As the unvaccinated and unmasked spread the new strains of the illness among themselves, some will die and some will get long haulers' disease. They might start new strains that will even affect the sensible and the cautious. The sensible and the cautious will avoid a state whose governor is putting them in danger.

I'm vaccinated. I'm ready to travel. But I will take my travel dollars elsewhere.

Personally, I had a great time in Florida a few weeks ago. Went to restaurants for the first time in nearly a year. It was great.

It was good to see sanity restored.

Who wants to go to those places anymore anyway?

Reading the article, this is political theater by DeSantis. As others have pointed out, short of flights within Florida, the Governor has no power to set requirements for Interstate and International travel. Interstate Commerce (which Interstate travel falls under) is clearly a Federal issue in the Constitution, and International travel is also Federal -- both the US and the country being traveled to/from.

Additionally, he states that private businesses are free to set up their own guidelines; he has no issue with private companies requiring some type of vaccine requirement. So, short of complaining about these passports, I'm not sure what he thinks he is going to do -- this seems more like a rant than anything substantive. Even stating that he will "prevent" it from being used for travel -- it is likely the private air carriers that will be the ones implementing passport requirements; though if it ends up being required for going through airport security, DeSantis still has no control, as the TSA is run by Homeland Security and their requirements override any Executive Order a governor may issue.
