2 Tim 4:3
For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.
2 Timothy 4 (NASB)
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
Hi Cassia, that's the NET* in your OP, yes?
To me, saying that they want to, "
accumulate teachers for themselves because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things" .. w/o also saying (as the text does) "
accumulate teachers for themselves .. ~in accordance with their own (sinful)
desires~" .. does not capture the essence or intended meaning of this verse.
I (for instance) always have an insatiable curiosity to hear/learn new things about God/His word/the faith (don't you?) .. as long as these "new things" can truly be shown to line up with the truth of God's word, that is
That's not what these CINO in v3-4 are after however, rather, instead of an "
insatiable curiosity to hear new things", they have an "insatiable NEED" for their pastor to assure them that all of their sinful desires are just fine with God
Sorry about the thread drift (and for being so nit-picky), but that paraphrase bothered me enough to say something (or am I perhaps misunderstanding what it's actually saying?).
Thanks

*(BTW, I normally consider the NET to be a fine translation/paraphrase, but not so much in this case).
