'Curiosity' in the Bible is found only once :)
2 Tim 4:3
For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.

Hello Cassia

Gonna teach you to hate rather than love,

Going to teach you to watch for yourself and not to others,

Going to teach you that you are the most important thing on this earth most certainly not God.

Going to follow the teaching of astrology instead it catches my curiosity more than God or Jesus Christ

These are not sound doctrines, that is for sure.

However, pray for your enemies Jesus Christ said.

Love your enemies, and be kind to them who hate you.

If someone doesn't wanna listen to sound teaching about God and the Lord Jesus Christ and their ability to help in this life - maybe one day in life they will come to the realization of the truth - Keep praying.

Am so tired! Thank you for your post.

2 Timothy 4 (NASB)

4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Hi Cassia, that's the NET* in your OP, yes?

To me, saying that they want to, "accumulate teachers for themselves because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things" .. w/o also saying (as the text does) "accumulate teachers for themselves .. ~in accordance with their own (sinful) desires~" .. does not capture the essence or intended meaning of this verse.

I (for instance) always have an insatiable curiosity to hear/learn new things about God/His word/the faith (don't you?) .. as long as these "new things" can truly be shown to line up with the truth of God's word, that is :preach:

That's not what these CINO in v3-4 are after however, rather, instead of an "insatiable curiosity to hear new things", they have an "insatiable NEED" for their pastor to assure them that all of their sinful desires are just fine with God :(

Sorry about the thread drift (and for being so nit-picky), but that paraphrase bothered me enough to say something (or am I perhaps misunderstanding what it's actually saying?).

Thanks :)

--David

*(BTW, I normally consider the NET to be a fine translation/paraphrase, but not so much in this case).

Sounds like this translation is trying to make a connection to Paul at Athens.
Acts 17:21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time
in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the Greek to support "curiosity to hear new things';
as
2 Timothy 4:3 includes the word
G1939 - Ἐπιθυμία - Strong's Greek Lexicon (KJV)
Desire, Lust Concupiscence, which I think was being discussed earlier.
More than mere curiosity maybe, but then again, it was only posted as trivia, so no need to get
all 'insatiable' over it, right? Does concupiscence mean insatiable? Lol. I never
got that word.
Good thread.

3For the time will come when men will not tolerate sound doctrine, but with itching ears they will gather around themselves teachers to suit their own desires.

to suit their own desires

κατά (on its neglect of elision before a vowel see Tdf, Proleg., p. 95; cf. Winers Grammar, § 5, 1 a.; a. 10; WH's Appendix, p. 146a), a preposition denoting motion or diffusion or direction from the higher to the lower; as in classical Greek, joined with the genitive and the accusative.
'direction from the higher to the lower’ pretty much covers it @St_Worm2 doesn’t it?

I lost my sense of humour about 10 yrs ago. I even remember what was happening then. The biggest oil spill the world had ever known happened. The big black bug bled black blood badly that day, and the world began to die. Sad to see it go :(

I can commiserate.
Revelation 11:18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.

Ears will be more than itchy.
Jeremiah 19:3 Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe
on this place, that whoever hears of it, his ears will tingle.
