What have you given lately?

Deuteronomy 15:11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, “You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.”

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that about 815 million people of the 7.6 billion people in the world, or 10.7%, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2016.

Get pregnant in the developing world, and your chances of dying or being disabled as a result are one in four.
If your child survives the pregnancy and labour, then he or she still has a one-in-10 chance of dying by the age of five.

Survive all this and your child's chances of going on to join the world's army of child labourers are around one in 10 in Asia and one in four in Africa.

Estimates of homelessness in the United States range from fewer than 600,000 to more than 1.5 million people.
150 million people in the world are homeless or 2% of the world population.

Right this very second your brothers and sisters are suffering. How can we pray for prosperity when we have everything we need and our fellow man suffers? What would Jesus think if we bought that shiny new watch instead of giving the money to a homeless man. How can we enjoy a new leather sofa whilst people in our neighbourhood are sleeping rough?

A shocking 3 in 4 people who are blind worldwide don't need to be. You can change that. Vulnerable people at risk of blindness in the world’s poorest places need you. Just by donating monthly you could literally be preventing blindness!

As Christians we need to do more and give more. There's plenty of charities out there in this dark, fallen world. Go and sign up for monthly subscriptions. Put faith into action. Just ask yourself this one question: WWJD? What would Jesus do?

Help prevent and alleviate hunger. Protect children from the horrors of abuse. Prevent cruelty to animals. Prevent people from becoming blind. And the list goes on and on... so whatever charities you choose, remember, you will be storing up gifts for yourself in heaven and you will feel better as a human being.

Mark 10:21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Well on this exact problem I haven't given anything. I have given more my fair share on charity causes but more for people and things I know in my area, neighborhood etc.

I guess on this though I have to point out that this is often not just about people not having food etc. Quite often there is a human element to this. Such as governments embezzling funds, or stealing charity provisions to fund their armies, or even deliberately starving certain groups they dislike etc. when it comes to nations etc. And at the family level, quite often this comes from drug abuse, alcoholism, gambling addiction etc. basically parents spend their money on their favorite addiction rather than feeding their family.

Anyway I say this, because the common reaction is "lets throw more money at the problem" and if the problem comes from humans all you are doing is giving them more money to the war lords, drug lords, and corrupt politicians, and addicts feeding their habit.

I like GiveDirectly. The money goes straight to the person in need. For $30 a month you can give someone in an underdeveloped country what amounts to a monthly income. GD is keeping close records of how the program is working. I can't think of another outreach where your giving goes directly to the person.

I know of the challenges some charities face in the form of corruption. Where intended funds do not reach the people in need. But I think we should not disregard charity on the basis of a few rotten apples.
There are many charities out there making a huge difference to those most in need.

You need to be careful giving to those as I have googled them and many are scams. There is one for the Jews that is a huge fraud. Be careful.

First of all, it is none of anyone's business.

Jesus Teaches About Giving
1 “Be careful! When you do good things, don’t do them in front of people to be seen by them. If you do that, then you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “When you give to the poor, don’t be like the hypocrites. They blow trumpets before they give so that people will see them. They do that in the synagogues and on the streets. They want other people to honor them. I tell you the truth. Those hypocrites already have their full reward. 3 So when you give to the poor, give very secretly. Don’t let anyone know what you are doing. 4 Your giving should be done in secret. Your Father can see what is done in secret, and he will reward you.

Second, there are click-to-donate websites. All you do is click on a button which will lead you to a page full of advertisements. Those advertisements pay for the causes they support, so you do not have to pay any money at all. Here is a good start:

Click to Donate FREE! Make free donations to 70 Charities. Nonprofit & volunteer links!

Third, ALWAYS do research before making donations, especially on the internet.[1][2] Be sure to report scams and fraud to the local authorities (Exodus 20:15-17, 1 Peter 2:11-25, Romans 13:1-7).[3][4]

We're not supposed to brag or talk on what we've done for others. See what you have started Richard:) You've made it about themselves, tsk tsk tsk.

The intention is not to brag but highlight the importance of giving to the poor. I'm sure no one is bragging just offering support in this area of need. :)
It is God's giving through all of us. We would never boast it was us and not Him, Amen.

If you love the Lord Jesus Christ, you will follow His commands...

The Promise of the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, you will do the things I command. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper. He will give you this Helper to be with you forever. 17 The Helper is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it does not see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you and he will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you all alone like orphans. I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live, too. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father. You will know that you are in me and I am in you. 21 He who knows my commands and obeys them is the one who loves me. And my Father will love him who loves me. I will love him and will show myself to him.”

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you plan to show yourself to us, but not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, then he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me does not obey my teaching. This teaching that you hear is not really mine. It is from my Father, who sent me.

25 “I have told you all these things while I am with you. 26 But the Helper will teach you everything. He will cause you to remember all the things I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name.

27 “I leave you peace. My peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world does. So don’t let your hearts be troubled. Don’t be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going, but I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you should be happy that I am going back to the Father because he is greater than I am. 29 I have told you this now, before it happens. Then when it happens, you will believe. 30 I will not talk with you much longer. The ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me. 31 But the world must know that I love the Father. So I do exactly what the Father told me to do.

“Come now, let us go.

Is It Right to Heal on the Sabbath?
14 On a Sabbath day, Jesus went to the home of a leading Pharisee to eat with him. The people there were all watching Jesus very closely. 2 A man with dropsy was brought before Jesus. 3 Jesus said to the Pharisees and teachers of the law, “Is it right or wrong to heal on the Sabbath day?” 4 But they would not answer his question. So Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. 5 Jesus said to the Pharisees and teachers of the law, “If your son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not pull him out quickly?” 6 And they could not answer him.

Don’t Make Yourself Important
7 Then Jesus noticed that some of the guests were choosing the best places to sit. So Jesus told this story: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, don’t take the most important seat. The host may have invited someone more important than you. 9 And if you are sitting in the most important seat, the host will come to you and say, ‘Give this man your seat.’ Then you will begin to move down to the last place. And you will be very embarrassed. 10 So when you are invited, go sit in a seat that is not important. Then the host will come to you and say, ‘Friend, move up here to a more important place!’ Then all the other guests will respect you. 11 Everyone who makes himself great will be made humble. But the person who makes himself humble will be made great.”

You Will Be Rewarded
12 Then Jesus said to the man who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite only your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. At another time they will invite you to eat with them. Then you will have your reward. 13 Instead, when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind. 14 Then you will be blessed, because they cannot pay you back. They have nothing. But you will be rewarded when the good people rise from death.”

A Story About a Big Banquet
15 One of the men sitting at the table with Jesus heard these things. The man said to Jesus, “The people who will eat a meal in God’s kingdom are blessed.”

16 Jesus said to him, “A man gave a big banquet and invited many people. 17 When it was time to eat, the man sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come! Everything is ready!’

18 “But all the guests said they could not come. Each man made an excuse. The first one said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go look at it. Please excuse me.’ 19 Another man said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen; I must go and try them. Please excuse me.’ 20 A third man said, ‘I just got married; I can’t come.’ 21 So the servant returned. He told his master what had happened. Then the master became angry and said, ‘Go at once into the streets and alleys of the town. Bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22 Later the servant said to him, ‘Master, I did what you told me to do, but we still have places for more people.’ 23 The master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes. Tell the people there to come. I want my house to be full! 24 None of those men that I invited first will ever eat with me!’”

...You do not have to give very much, if anything at all. Just contribute what you possibly can for the glory of God, out of your own free will...

6 Remember this: The person who plants a little will have a small harvest. But the person who plants a lot will have a big harvest. 7 Each one should give, then, what he has decided in his heart to give. He should not give if it makes him sad. And he should not give if he thinks he is forced to give. God loves the person who gives happily. 8 And God can give you more blessings than you need. Then you will always have plenty of everything. You will have enough to give to every good work. 9 It is written in the Scriptures:

“He gives freely to the poor.
The things he does are right and will continue forever.” Psalm 112:9

10 God is the One who gives seed to the farmer. And he gives bread for food. And God will give you all the seed you need and make it grow. He will make a great harvest from your goodness. 11 God will make you rich in every way so that you can always give freely. And your giving through us will cause many to give thanks to God. 12 This service that you do helps the needs of God’s people. It is also bringing more and more thanks to God. 13 This service you do is a proof of your faith. Many people will praise God because of it. They will praise God because you follow the Good News of Christ—the gospel you say you believe. They will praise God because you freely share with them and with all others. 14 And when they pray, they will wish they could be with you. They will feel this because of the great grace that God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his gift that is too wonderful to explain.

...How one treats the vulnerable members of society reveals true character. Do you truly love God enough to care for them, as He commanded?

People Know You by Your Actions
15 “Be careful of false prophets. They come to you and look gentle like sheep. But they are really dangerous like wolves. 16 You will know these people because of the things they do. Good things don’t come from bad people, just as grapes don’t come from thornbushes. And figs don’t come from thorny weeds. 17 In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit. And bad trees produce bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit. And a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

The Spirit and Human Nature
16 So I tell you: Live by following the Spirit. Then you will not do what your sinful selves want. 17 Our sinful selves want what is against the Spirit. The Spirit wants what is against our sinful selves. The two are against each other. So you must not do just what you please. 18 But if you let the Spirit lead you, you are not under the law.

19 The result of sin’s control in our lives is clear. It includes sexual immorality, impurity and wild living, 20 worshiping false gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, 21 having envy, being drunk, having wild and wasteful parties, and doing other things like this. I warn you now as I warned you before: Those who do these things will not be in God’s kingdom. 22 But the Spirit gives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. There is no law that says these things are wrong. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. 25 We get our new life from the Spirit. So we should follow the Spirit. 26 We must not be proud. We must not make trouble with each other. And we must not be jealous of each other.

...Because this is what will happen to hypocritical and/or false Christians...

The King Will Judge All People
31 “The Son of Man will come again in his great glory. All his angels will come with him. He will be King and sit on his great throne. 32 All the people of the world will be gathered before him. Then he will separate them into two groups as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 The Son of Man will put the sheep, the good people, on his right and the goats, the bad people, on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to the good people on his right, ‘Come. My Father has given you his blessing. Come and receive the kingdom God has prepared for you since the world was made. 35 I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was alone and away from home, and you invited me into your house. 36 I was without clothes, and you gave me something to wear. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then the good people will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and give you food? When did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you alone and away from home and invite you into our house? When did we see you without clothes and give you something to wear? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and care for you?’

40 “Then the King will answer, ‘I tell you the truth. Anything you did for any of my people here, you also did for me.’

41 “Then the King will say to those on his left, ‘Go away from me. God has said that you will be punished. Go into the fire that burns forever. That fire was prepared for the devil and his helpers. 42 I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink. 43 I was alone and away from home, and you did not invite me into your house. I was without clothes, and you gave me nothing to wear. I was sick and in prison, and you did not care for me.’

44 “Then those people will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty? When did we see you alone and away from home? Or when did we see you without clothes or sick or in prison? When did we see these things and not help you?’

45 “Then the King will answer, ‘I tell you the truth. Anything you refused to do for any of my people here, you refused to do for me.’

Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 25 - New International Version
Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 25 - International Children’s Bible

...Because refusing to do so reveals either a lack of faith in the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, or even selfish ambition...

Faith and Good Works
14 My brothers, if someone says he has faith, but does nothing, his faith is worth nothing. Can faith like that save him? 15 A brother or sister in Christ might need clothes or might need food. 16 And you say to him, “God be with you! I hope you stay warm and get plenty to eat.” You say this, but you do not give that person the things he needs. Unless you help him, your words are worth nothing. 17 It is the same with faith. If faith does nothing, then that faith is dead, because it is alone.

18 Someone might say, “You have faith, but I do things. Show me your faith! Your faith does nothing. I will show you my faith by the things I do.” 19 You believe there is one God. Good! But the demons believe that, too! And they shake with fear.

20 You foolish person! Must you be shown that faith that does nothing is worth nothing?
21 Abraham is our father. He was made right with God by the things he did. He offered his son Isaac to God on the altar. 22 So you see that Abraham’s faith and the things he did worked together. His faith was made perfect by what he did. 23 This shows the full meaning of the Scripture that says: “Abraham believed God, and God accepted Abraham’s faith, and that faith made him right with God.” And Abraham was called “God’s friend.” 24 So you see that a person is made right with God by the things he does. He cannot be made right by faith only.

25 Another example is Rahab, who was a prostitute. But she was made right with God by something she did: She helped the spies for God’s people. She welcomed them into her home and helped them escape by a different road.

26 A person’s body that does not have a spirit is dead. It is the same with faith. Faith that does nothing is dead!

Bible Gateway passage: James 2 - International Children’s Bible

1 Does your life in Christ give you strength? Does his love comfort you? Do we share together in the Spirit? Do you have mercy and kindness? 2 If so, make me very happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and having one mind and purpose. 3 When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. 4 Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others.

Be Unselfish Like Christ
5 In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus.

6 Christ himself was like God in everything.
He was equal with God.
But he did not think that being equal with God was something to be held on to.
7 He gave up his place with God and made himself nothing.
He was born as a man
and became like a servant.
8 And when he was living as a man,
he humbled himself and was fully obedient to God.
He obeyed even when that caused his death—death on a cross.
9 So God raised Christ to the highest place.
God made the name of Christ greater than every other name.
10 God wants every knee to bow to Jesus—
everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.
11 Everyone will say, “Jesus Christ is Lord”
and bring glory to God the Father.

And thieves cannot break in and steal that treasure. 21 Your heart will be where your treasure is.

22 “The eye is a light for the body. If your eyes are good, then your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are evil, then your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the only light you have is really darkness, then you have the worst darkness.

24 “No one can be a slave to two masters. He will hate one master and love the other. Or he will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. So you cannot serve God and money at the same time.

True Wealth
16 Jesus also said to his followers, “Once there was a rich man. He had a manager to take care of his business. Later, the rich man learned that his manager was cheating him. 2 So he called the manager in and said to him, ‘I have heard bad things about you. Give me a report of what you have done with my money. You can’t be my manager any longer!’ 3 Later, the manager thought to himself, ‘What will I do? My master is taking my job away from me! I am not strong enough to dig ditches. I am too proud to beg. 4 I know! I’ll do something so that when I lose my job, people will welcome me into their homes.’

5 “So the manager called in everyone who owed the master any money. He said to the first man, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 The man answered, ‘I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.’ The manager said to him, ‘Here is your bill; sit down quickly and make the bill less. Write 400 gallons.’ 7 Then the manager said to another man, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ The man answered, ‘I owe him 1,000 bushels of wheat.’ Then the manager said to him, ‘Here is your bill; you can make it less. Write 800 bushels.’ 8 Later, the master praised the dishonest manager for being smart. Yes, worldly people are smarter with their own kind than spiritual people are.

9 “I tell you, make friends for yourselves using worldly riches. Then, when those things are gone, you will be welcomed in that home that continues forever. 10 Whoever can be trusted with small things can also be trusted with large things. Whoever is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in large things too. 11 If you cannot be trusted with worldly riches, then you will not be trusted with the true riches. 12 And if you cannot be trusted with the things that belong to someone else, then you will not be given things of your own.

13 “No servant can serve two masters. He will hate one master and love the other. Or he will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

God’s Law Cannot Be Changed
14 The Pharisees were listening to all these things. They made fun of Jesus because they all loved money. 15 Jesus said to them, “You make yourselves look good in front of people. But God knows what is really in your hearts. The things that are important to people are worth nothing to God.

Yes, it's no one's business. Again, this thread was created with the intention of drawing attention to the importance of helping those in need.
I had wrestled with the idea of what if this is seen as boasting but carefully worded the thread so as not to boast.
The world clearly has its priorities all wrong as I'm sure you will agree I.t.o hunger, etc. and many people read these threads and might decide to give or give more?
It's all God's giving through us, Amen...

The intention is not to brag but highlight the importance of giving to the poor. I'm sure no one is bragging just offering support in this area of need. :)
It is God's giving through all of us. We would never boast it was us and not Him, Amen.
I know your intentions are good but it is a little condemning and causes people to defend their giving.
Its Gods not ours to quicken the spirit of giving to each person privately or publicly in an non obligated way. JMO, God bless!

I do understand what you are doing with this topic, and I am in full agreement with you.

My apologies for any abrasiveness on my part. I just wanted to add that piece of Scripture because I have made this same mistake countless times. I also have concerns for many people today doing good works for the sake of social media validation. If anything, I'd say this Bible passage is more relevant today than it ever has been (Ecclesiastes 1:1-11, Matthew 24:35). It is simply showing off and even reveals selfish ambition when it ends with the phrase, "Like, Comment, and Subscribe!" (Galatians 5:19-21, Philippians 2:1-11, 2 Timothy 3:1-9)[1][2][3][4][5]

We are all flawed human beings who are predisposed towards selfishness. God knows our hearts. We are to please God, not man (Galatians 1:10, Luke 16:1-15, Romans 3:9-20).
