Reading the (so far) English translations of the Desert Fathers, how has it effected your personal spirituality? For me, it has led me to stop feeling sorry for myself. Thoughts?
I have also read John Cassian's Conferences, as well as the Life of St. Antony by St. Athanasius, as well as Palladuis's Lausiac History. We Christians are engaged in spiritual combat...whether we know it, or accept, it or not.
I think every Christian should read the sayings of the Desert Fathers. They have a much different perspective on the spiritual life than many might be accustomed to.
Reading the Desert Fathers led me to reading about Hesychasm and eventually the Philokalia, which has had a profound effect on my spiritual practice. Good (great) stuff. I highly recommend all of it.

I also read the Philokalia (4 volumes of the English translation...haven't gotten to the newly published 5th volume). The majority reading is that we Christians who care to know are engaged in spiritual combat.
