1 Thessalonians 1:
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,
3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope
in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,
4 knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.
Paul introduces a term in his letters to the Thessalonians that he had not used in any
of his other epistles: beloved brethren=adelphos agapao. Notice he does not use philos,
as in Philadelphia=city of brotherly love. He speaks of a deeper love anchored to a mutual commitment to Christ, and a love of the Truth. I just can’t seem to stop thinking about this expression. It is a meditation that creates a longing in me to see the face of Christ in his faithful, and be able to somehow love as He loves.
2 Thessalonians 2:
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.
