No. Government needs a higher moral authority to keep from becoming the moral authority.

Who has ever considered government to be a moral authority of any kind?

-- A2SG, anyone who does would be a very silly person.....

They're out there.

Are you sure? It sounds like something people believe about other people, but has no basis in fact or reality. Kinda like someone assuming people believe this, but never knowing anyone who actually does.

I'd be very surprised if anyone really professes this belief. Can you demonstrate anyone actually doing so?

-- A2SG, even as silly beliefs go, this one is just so unbelieveable.....

I haven't considered who believes it or not really. I know any one who would feel guilty for believing something that has been believed for millenia is living it.

You think people have believed for "millennia" that governments are moral authorities?

I highly doubt that.

-- A2SG, sounds like living strawmen...made up people who espouse beliefs the arguer finds easy to argue against.....

No. I must have misunderstood you. I think people who formed this government understood that the various religions were necessary so that the consciences of government lawmakers would be properly formed. I doubt many previous governments saw it that way....they just got lucky that religion was organized and well estabglished in culture

Actually, it seems to me they considered religion to be unnecessary to creating laws, and wanted to keep religion out of government, since they specifically disallowed establishing any religion at all. So lawmakers can create laws without having to consider any religious doctrine whatsoever.

But this is off topic for this thread anyway, so I'll just let it go.

Any authority that needs the government's support, or can be dismissed by that same government, can't really be "higher," can it?

At best, such an authority is merely a tool -- to be used as needed, and discarded when inconvenient.

Once again, peoples, the topic is the aftermath of the Capitol breach.

LINK

Federico G. Klein, a former mid-level aide at the State Department, is the first member of the Trump administration to face criminal charges in connection with the January 6 storming of the capital.

Klein was arrested in Virginia for charges including unlawful entry, violent and disorderly conduct, obstructing Congress and law enforcement, and assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, Samantha Shero, a spokesperson for the Bureau's Washington Field Office, confirmed Thursday.

Klein, 42, worked on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, as a "tech analyst," according to Federal Election Commission records.

According to his deleted LinkedIn page, Klein previously worked for the pro-life, pro-marriage Family Research Council as a researcher, and as a Republican state convention delegate in Virginia.

For example, St Cyr posted a picture of herself inside the building captioned, “Patriots are in our house,” as well as a video from the Capitol steps saying the rioters needed “glasses and gas masks.”

“Super sad that this is America, and Americans are being beaten for wanting to save their country,” she says on one post, adding, “So welcome to communist America.”

In a since-deleted Facebook Live post from Jan.7, St Cyr bragged about having “made CNN” (she was shown on the cable news network leaning out of a Capitol Building window and yelling “this is our house”).

“God put me in that window, so I’m assuming God put me on CNN screaming like a mad woman,” St Cyr said, according to the Idaho Statesman. “So hey, maybe I’m going to get arrested again, but I would get arrested and I would die for this country. So no regrets.”

Neither. Sadists and narcissists are not good people to emulate.
