I would assume the cost of administering the returns and reusing them would result in less profit.
Well so much for caring about the planet huh? Lord knows Coca Cola is struggling. ;)

So I read this article:

I’m curious why we do not go back to reusable glass bottles. Is there a reason I’m not aware of?

You know if they went the Dixie-cup route of having waxed paper or whatever Dixie uses this is completely feasible, but I would really hold off on it. Things like shelf stability being a major issue, you cannot guarantee temperature controls on long terms shipping and storage of goods like this.

Some companies are willing to cut into their profits for good causes.

I don’t drink coke anymore but you’d think paper and wax would effect flavor.

It is about the bottom line. The glass needs to be emptied of debris, thoroughly washed, then examined for chips. It's more expensive to transport. There is a market for it, though, so it's still part of the mix.

Coke recently joined the woke train, though, so this would be a good time to think twice about using products like theirs.

I’m curious why we do not go back to reusable glass bottles. Is there a reason I’m not aware of?
1)cost to manufacture may be a little higher.
2)cost to clean and reuse bottles is higher
3)cost to ship glass bottles back to be reused
4)weight and fragility of glass vs plastic costs more
5)Labeling is harder to update requiring melting down of glass to get new graphics on bottles
6)metal caps often require bottle openers such that people have to carry one when they use them.
7)plastic bottles don't break when dropped and cut people so you can use cheap plastic bags instead of more expensive paper sacks.
8)2 and 3 liter glass bottles can be rather heavy to deal with for older folks and people that aren't strong in the arms.
That said I remember buying soda in 32 oz glass bottles with large mouths and I liked it as the larger mouth made pouring very easy compared to current soda bottle with a hole about the size of a nickel.

Seems everyone is saying the plastic leeches into your system.
Well, they are still reusable.

There's also the question of weight. If you have to lug the stuff up a few flights of stairs, you might opt for plastic on that basis, alone.

I rarely drink soda but if I do, I always opt for the glass bottle and the soda made with real sugar.

Some plastic do leach but others don't but the plastic that is in most beverage bottles can leach over time and I think heat increases the process. There are plastic water pipes that are safe I think polypropylene is safe.

In my state (NSW - Australia) there is a 10cent deposit on plastic bottles and cans. Returns are via automated bottle/can banks located all over the state. Refunds are paid electronically on the spot or can be donated to charity. The collected containers go to recycling.

Last I heard it had reduced containers going to landfill by about 60%.

That’s wonderful. But what about the health concerns from consuming food and drink from plastic?

I think they should just stick to the can, right up to around the litre mark. I know that Monster do litre cans with the screw top cap over on your side of the water - and it works really well. (What's that on your money? 30 ounces or so?)

With paper, you're just asking for damages and exploding cartons. I can't see how it can possibly work. Then again, I never thought COVID would turn into a global pandemic. So...

(I'm reluctant to trust my foresight nowadays.)

Whatever happens, I think we can all agree that the world will be a better place without plastic bottles. They do nothing to improve the taste and they're actually nasty to drink out of. I don't know why the supermarkets stock them, surely flavouring drops and refillable Co2 canisters will give you gallons of the stuff for a fraction of the space.

Or am I just being stupid?

You sound right on track to me. I really do not understand everything there is to know about plastic but like you said, it’s a huge problem all over the world that disgusts me. Especially when it comes to our oceans.

The best things that we could do over the next ten years, is reduce livestock populations (I even said this when I managed cattle), get RID of plastic, stop fishing (there's basically no fish left now) and invest in marine phytoplankton and extract our proteins and fatty acids that way.

Not just for the planet, but for us too. Otherwise we're just going to keep polluting the place and spreading viruses around.

^ That's an opinion, just an opinion for what it's worth. Personally, I think God's voice has never been louder and more succinct.
