The Death of Jesus

(Psalm 22:1-31; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49; John 19:28-30)

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

It seems to me that this is not an orderly account. It has led some to believe that this all happened at once as soon as he died. But a look at verse 53 shows it happens three days later 'after his resurrection'. But the Centurion it says saw the earthquake and 'those things that were done' referring to the graves being opened and the temple veil being wrought in two. (which he would not have known abot or been able to see. )

So that leaves us with some questions:

  1. When did the earthquake happen?
  2. When did the veil tear, right after death, or after the resurrection?
  3. When did the saints come out of the grave, when he died or after the resurrection?

In the past few years, I have read or heard clear Scriptural answers to all these questions,

completely in total, perfect Harmony in Yeshua Hamashiach, Yahweh, His Word, His Plan and His Purpose for us all.

I do not 'know' them all well enough to post them here, yet, but may, Yahweh Willing, proceed to find the proper references , as Yahweh Permits.

Yes this will be a fruitful exercise.

Thanks for the question.

Considered answers please...

Is it possible that 'after His resurrection' refers to the spirit leaving the body and not the bodily resurrection? That would explain how the soldiers were still watching Him.

….When did the earthquake happen? When did the veil tear, right after death, or after the resurrection? When did the saints come out of the grave, when he died or after the resurrection?
Matthew 27, mentions that an earthquake and veil renting coincided with the crucifixion:

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open.”

Matthew 27: 52 The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this was the Son of God."

From this verse I get the impression that the tombs may have been broken open but it isn't until Yeshua's resurrection that they left those tombs. Now as to why they would remain in the tombs until after Yeshua's resurrection is puzzling.

Another activity you didn't mention was the sun.
Luke 23:45
The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.

There is also the second earthquake. So that makes two, one at His death and the other at His resurrection.
Matthew 28:2
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

The versification is artificial, and there is no punctuation in the Greek, and in this case I think it is misleading. Here's what I think is the natural sense of the passage.

Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to the bottom. And the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split open, and the graves were opened.
(And many bodies of the saints who were asleep were raised up and came out of the graves after His resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.)

In the first sentence, Matthew is describing the geophysical effects of Christ's death. He says that the earthquake caused the graves to open.

The second sentence in parenthetical. This is a good time to add it because he had just described the tombs being opened. So later on, when Christ, Who is the first-fruits from the grave, arose (ie, it seems to follow that no one should arise before Him), those in the tombs also rose from death and walked out. They were able to exit the tombs because they were already opened by the prior earthquake. Each tomb didn't need its stone rolled away separately; it had already been done. It's like their opening was done in anticipation of Christ's resurrection and exiting the grave.

These 2-3 verse got my attention and so I researched dozens of well-know theologians commentaries. The results were that most all of them either seemed to avoid it, or treaded very cautiously on their comments. Only one or two came close to what I saw in those verses.

I will get back with more on this if anyone is still interested.
