There is an african american monk at St Anthony's monastery in Arizona, and when we visited the Archangels Monastery on the Greek island of Thassos, there was a nun there who was African American.

If you ever go to Thassos, we highly recommend a visit to Stelios' Taverna in the village of Theologos, as well as staying at the monastery of course . It is a dependancy (the monastery, not the taverna)of the Holy Monastery of Pantocrator on Mt Athos, which is where Elder Ephrem was the Abbot before relocating to the U.S.A.
The monastery has one of the nails which held Christ on the cross!

there is also Mother Katherine, a well known African American Orthodox nun here in the States.

I realise it's all nonsense, but I try not to go out of my way to offend the easily offended.

Yay! This always makes me happy. I found it a bit intimidating when going to my first Orthodox Church because it was very ethnic. My military church is very mixed but stateside it was very ethnic and it can be very intimidating. Even more so when you don’t look like anyone else in the church. This makes my heart full of joy!

I am pro-choice on the matter

I get a sense that a big stumbling block for some people is the notion that Orthodoxy is the church for Russians or Greeks, and therefore they feel excluded if they do not fall into a certain ethnic category. All nonsense of course, and this is a testament to that. All are welcome in Orthodoxy!

Well, it doesn't help when in giant letters you'll see "St Nicholas GREEK Orthodox Church" and maybe two families are Greek-speaking, much less ethnically Greek


Right now, I prefer the term Military Orthodox: we don't get the luxury of being jurisdictionally picky
