This is a bomb shell! The rest of the article was behind a WSJ paywall. I am sure it is trending.

ROME—Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Cardinal Robert Sarah as head of the Vatican’s office for liturgy, removing an outspoken conservative and possible future pope from the ranks of Vatican leadership.

The Holy See Press Office announced Saturday that Cardinal Sarah had stepped down. No successor has been named.

The cardinal submitted his resignation as required by church law when he turned 75 on June 15 of last year. But the pope frequently lets cardinals serve two or three years past that age, though not past 80. Last June, the cardinal wrote on Twitter: “For my part, I am happy to continue my work” at the Vatican.

In accepting Cardinal Sarah’s resignation, the pope has removed a subordinate out of step with his approach to liturgy, homosexuality and relations with the Muslim world. The cardinal is a hero to many conservative Catholics, some of whom see him as a future pontiff. He will still be able to vote in a conclave to elect a pope until he turns 80.

The Wall Street journal is sensationalizing this when you go look at Cardinal Sarah's post... This was the mandatory submission of a resignation that all bishops have to do at age 75.

Don't get me wrong this is horrible because I have little faith in who might take the position.

But he didn't remove the conservative cleric from his post. 98% of all resignations at 75 are accepted automatically

That’s not what I’ve read. I’ve read where the majority of cardinals are automatically retained unless there’s a problem. So he effectively did “remove” him.

Now if the Pope wanted strong continuing reliable liturgical leadership... could have kept him in the post. I'm trying to even think of who is half as good to take his place.

Of the existing Cardinals I would think Burke, even though he's only a couple years away from 75 himself. If Bishop Strickland or Archbishop Cordileone are ever elevated they would be great candidates for that post.

I lament the timing of this. After the Amazonian Synod, and everything the German bishops are up to, losing a figure like Cardinal Sarah could be a big blow.

Cardinal Sarah comes across as still being on his toes cognitively speaking so the optics look politically motivated. A man age 75 can still very much be up to the task.

In the past, but Pope Francis has been accepting almost all of them. He does it at a far higher rate than JPII and B16.

An argument can be made that he's attempting to fill positions with Cardinals more like him theologically

I agree. He is mentally more agile than people more than half his age. Physically too from what I understand.

Yeah, I’ve heard that argument. It sucks.

Turned 75 in June of 2020. So he wasn't removed on his birthday at least. Sad to see him go. I need people like him around.
