Perhaps if they focused on opportunities.

Its easy to look from a state of opportunity, to tell others that they haven't properly utilized their options.

It's a matter of time I agree. We have been over our enslavement in Egypt for about three thousand years now, they only 150 from ours. It takes time to get used to being free.

That said they didn't exercise the 'exodus' option as we did, so there's that.

All kidding aside they are trying to make an Afro-centric culture work in a Euro-centric country. That's tough sledding. It's been suggested that they need to 'turn white' (metaphorically of course) in order to succeed. I think there's some truth to that. Our culture and values have brought us along quite well. That door is open to all who live here.

An excellent and succinct description of racism.

Well, it IS "BLACK" history month, which means it's racist, by definition. The US constitution was founded on the rights of the individual, regardless of race, sex, etc. i.e. you don't "focus" on the accomplishments of people based on their race - or sex. You focus on their accomplishments on their merit.

So in that sense we are a meritocracy. And meritocracies are the cultures that climb to the top every time.

Can my kid opt out of white history? SMH.
If I had school aged kids and the school had a "White history" month, you had better believe I'd opt them out.

But if I had school aged kids today there is no way I'd put them in our current public schools. Frankly, I see public school as a 19th century paradigm that outlived its usefulness in the early 21st century. It's primary function is twofold:
1. Supply jobs to over-educated college grads in support of the higher education system.
2. Supply free daycare to parents that have sold themselves into indentured slavery.

With cheap computers, the internet and sites like Khanacademy.org, public schools are a relic of a bygone era and economically bloated beyond all excuse.

Yes, slavery is over, Jim Crow is over and discrimination is illegal. Black people are perfectly free now to act like white people. It's not our fault if they don't want to. ;)

Maybe a few of them could try it in Japan and see where it goes. ;)

One wild card is overpopulation.

Potential for success divided by overpopulation equals a lot of potential for failure. Thus merit becomes even more important.

I don't know what you mean by "act like white people". Do you mean they should buy Perry Como records?

Actually most do, but there is a large subculture that is problematic; the tail that is wagging the dog so to speak.

Do even white people still buy Perry Como records? No, that was more of a dig at OWG for his "euro-centric culture" remark.

I think you nailed it on the "merit" card. But regarding overpopulation, I think the opposite is happening. The pill changed everything way back in the 1960's. We don't have an overpopulation problem. The opposite is true, hence the hand wringing in Japan. Western civilization depends on growth for its very survival. And the lack of population growth is why there is a fight to open our borders to "anyone" and why Europe is letting in so many "refugees" from the middle east. They need to bolster their population and "grow the economy" through population increase via immigration - legal or otherwise. Heck, it's why we were letting "anyone" in to Ellis island back in the day. We had a whole frontier to populate.

That's why Russia was paying women to have children. The whole population bomb fear mongering has gone the way of the old global freezing fear mongering.

The real problem that is going to bite ALL of us, but is hitting the less skilled first, is this:

I don’t even see why this should be a problem. Black history is a huge part of American history and the atrocities that happened in the past keep us focused on never repeating that mistake. It’s people like this that fuel the fire that organizations like BLM and Antifa thrive on. They’ll gain more support because of the actions of people like these parents.

What convinces people they've made it by 'merit' rather than by anything else?

I ask because I grew up with a father who had 'his' house purchased for him (well, for my mother, my brother, and me after my parents' divorce in the early 1980s, but that's another story) by his mother, and we all knew it, but nobody could say it to him because to do so would not only be considered rude, but we would be subjected to just the kind of blathering on about 'merit' as we see in this thread...it's like, okay, I don't disagree on principle, but you're not even describing something you personally have done...so I just wonder how much of what is being described here is a similar sort of 'this is how the world works' lecture from someone who doesn't actually recognize all the advantages they've had while they've been telling everyone around them what a hard worker they are. And don't get me wrong, my father did work very hard at his career for over 40 years; the point is more that if someone starts off at a certain level it's very easy for them to assume that everyone around them can reach whatever goal they have even if others never had the same opportunities, precisely because said opportunities are not recognized as the advantage that they are.

Call it old wise guy blinders, if you must...

Right. And you are very good at describing what you see. The problems you describe--people thinking that there are "problematic subcultures" or thinking about the US as a "euro-centric country" lie at the very heart of racism.
