Many in the OT thought they would be 'clean' from sin outwardly by works (not touching lepers/being near a dead corpse, etc). When Christ died and shed his blood for us on the cross, sin can be dealt with inwardly. When the Holy spirit convicts, one 'looks' to the cross, is convicted of their sin and accepts Christ's sacrifice and allows the Holy Spirit in....to lead them and guide them to walk a Holy life.
Sadly, many today still think its an outward cleansing that is needed.......
