Making America California

The Biden administration seems determined to run
the country on the ruinous model of the Golden State.
Biden Touts California as Model for America | City Journal

"As the Biden administration settles in and begins to formulate its agenda,
progressive pundits, politicians, and activists point to California as a role
model for national policy. If the administration listens to them, it would
prove a disaster for America’s already-beleaguered middle and working classes.

Make America California Again? That's Biden's plan

"California is emerging as the de facto policy think tank of the Biden-Harris
administration and of a Congress soon to be under Democratic control.

What's so abhorrent about California?

You guys don't like the Coasties' bigotry against "flyover country", but restraint and civility has to go both ways.

Nearly every person I've talked to IRL who bashes california has never even been there. Does california have its issue? sure. Does it rank high on the list of states I would live? nope, probably towards the middle. But there are a lot of states that are far, far worse to live in or even just visit. California is a massive state with a lot of beautiful areas and has a robust economy. It is simply very expensive to live and needs to cut a bit of red tape

Good response. California is middling along, which is better than some states. If you want to see basket cases, go to the southern US, not the coasts.

The author of this hit piece thinks Texas is an alternative, but Texas is only a thing because of substantial subsidies by taxpayers outside of Texas. Outside of cities like Austin, Texas ranks low in terms of livability and cosmopolitanism.

Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas to be precise. The first has rampant poverty, poor education, low wages. The second is a cesspool of crime. The third might as well wear a white hood.

California and New York are the reason we can afford things like Mississippi and Alabama.

Exactly. CA is a victim of its own economic success combined with a lot of nimby zoning that makes cost of living way high, at least in the metro areas.

Orange county, where I live, is pretty red. It helps to understand that the poverty rate is so high in California, due to overpopulation, in fact, a new zoning law in my area has now made it possible to build rental homes in people's backyards in the city to compensate for a lack of housing. With the homeless, they come from all over the country because of a warm, dry Mediterranean climate, and the close proximity to Mexico, means immigrants are constantly flooding the state.

...It's just overpopulated, but not necessarily poorly governed, IMO.

I think it's expensive because that's how free-markets work in areas with a nearly perfect climate. It's not too humid, or cold pretty much year round. That's what makes it costly.

Try it, man. You'll, like, like it.

I know when I lived in the Midwest, everyone I grew up with fantasized about moving away one day. What I found suprising is that the people raised in California generally don't want to leave, and are actually satisfied, which is the opposite of what I expected.

...It kind of shocked me, because I always thought that was just common, universal behavior for people to naturally want to leave the place they are from. Turns out it's not.

True. But Hawaii may be more liberal than CA. Biden/Harris won the state by more than a 29% margin. (Which I think is about the same as CA.) Its Senators and House reps (of which there are 4 in total) are all Democrats. The Governor, Lt. Governor, AG, Sec of State are all Democrats. And there are only about 4 Republicans in the state legislature. It also has the highest cost of living of all 50 states.

Realistically, I think California is the preferred target because "Hollywood"... What people might fail to realize, is that California has a very wide variety of types of areas, and Hollywood is just one of hundreds. You can find pretty much anything and everything here... It's very diverse. Like a mini-world of It's own.

...You can visit China, Mexico, England and Afghanistan on the same day. Then spend the next day in Italy or a tropical island paradise, or an Aspen-style ski resort, or a giant forest, or a barren desert.... If you know where to go.

I was born in San Francisco, lived a few years in Florida came back to California and vowed never to leave again. Can someone tell me what I am missing out on by living here? It would be helpful to identify specifics. Thanks for the insight!

Having grown up in California, the main negatives for me are the cost of living and the overcrowding. Also somewhat boring weather.

I now live in a small city on the east coast where I have similar access to outdoor recreation and all of the amenities I need, while paying 1/2 to 1/3 of what I would I would pay to rent a similar-sized house, and the traffic is much, much lighter. As a bonus, I get a real winter (currently a couple inches of snow on the ground).
