I'm 20 and have always considered myself a Christian but only recently started actually reading the Bible and going to church, but now instead of feeling more certain and peaceful about my faith, I find myself feeling more worried that God will send me to hell for not being a good enough Christian. I wanted to ask for advice--does God really love me and want me? I just read Revelations 3:15-3:17, and in addition to other verses I've been reading, it seems like He is always ready to spit me out? Also how will I know if I am going to be saved, and if not, how can I become saved and remain that way? Sorry this is so long and probably sounds very ignorant, but I would really appreciate any advice and insight
There's no such thing as being "good enough".
The Christian life isn't a moral test, it's not about who is the most moral, who can win the most brownie points, who can get the mos gold star stickers.
The Christian life is about the God who has invaded the world with love to save sinners, who meets us in our sin, and saves us. It is a life that comes from God's grace, His kindness and love toward us, which is unconditional and boundless. In light of His grace, we can then be moved to faithfulness. The vertical dimension of the Christian life--us before God--is settled and established by Jesus, by His death and resurrection. Which is given to us freely, it is grace, God's own endless generosity. The horizontal, that's where good works come in, loving our neighbor, feeding the hungry, being faithful servants and disciples of Jesus in this world.
Jesus Christ came to save sinners.
That's you and me.
God shows His love in that even as sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus said that it's not the healthy that need a doctor, but the sick.
The Church is a hospital for sinners, not a country club for saints.
Christ's Church is the Church of misfits and moral failures. Every saint is at once and also the same time a miserable sinner. We Lutherans have a term for that: Simul iustus et peccator, Latin for "Both saint and sinner".
That we are sinners is obvious by our failure to be righteous according to God's commandments. That we are saints is by the grace of God alone, for we receive the righteousness of Jesus Christ as pure gift. That's what it means to say that we are freely justified by grace through faith. We are freely justified--made righteous--by God's grace. It is not a righteousness of works, of actions, of things we do, say, think, or feel; it is the righteousness of Jesus, a righteousness which is
given to us. That is what it means to be clothed in Christ (Galatians 3:27). That's why St. Paul says that Christ "be came sin so that we could become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21).
It's not about you being good enough.
It's about God being good enough.
And God is good enough, loving us even in our unloveliness.
That's why He saves us.
That's why Christ came into the world.
That's why Jesus died for you.
That's what makes you saved.
