I'd never heard of this. The fellow who wrote this article is Orthodox, and claims carved icons are "legitimate" icons and were common in the early Church. Is that right?

But when I saw this, I was reminded that at the monastery near me, they have an iconostasis which, if I'm recalling correctly, doesn't have icons on it, but rather is more like one giant icon itself. It's a huge piece of woodwork with very intricate carving done all over it. They say it took years to create. Wish I could share a pic, because it's really magnificent to see. So maybe the guy's right?
They're not illegitimate, but they're not all that common either. My stepmom has a few coffee table books of icons and iconography and there's quite a few examples in them of these sorts of carved icons - I remember looking through it once as a kid and seeing a few that were carved out of what looked like ivory. At my parent's house they have a carved icon of the Hospitality of Abraham (commonly called the Rublev Trinity) on the outside of their front door. I think some could be used for outdoor spaces, but I can't think of any churches, for example, that might have them.

I was blind, but now I see
Good! Then you can scroll up and see that this thread is part of The Ancient Way - Eastern Orthodox forum. Now, I don't know what your faith tradition is (nor particularly care) but since you are clearly not Eastern Orthodox, you are welcome to post here and be social. We do use icons as a tool to worship and keep our focus on God while we pray. The usage of which goes back to the first icons which were painted by the very same St Luke who wrote one of the Gospels - some might even have survived to this day. The tradition of venerating icons and having them around in general has been defended and attacked through the ages. The last major time was from the heresy of iconoclasm in the 8th century which came about when the Byzantine emperor at the time foolishly thought that getting rid of all the icons would bring Muslims back to Christianity. Unfortunately, that didn't work out well for a lot of people and a lot of Protestants, such as yourself, who attack icons do so with the same heretical logic that Muslims used then. It didn't sway the Church then, and it won't do so now. (EDIT to add: the first two things the Soviets did in the former USSR after they took over was to destroy the church bells and the icons). While your particular brand of Evangelical heresy might think we're crazy for using icons in our daily life, you are still in our subforum; not the Evangelical one. And in the words of every parent that's dealt with an obstinate teenager, "while you live under my roof, you live by my rules". Visit our forum, and respect our 2000 year old traditions, or leave.

We don't wonder, we know He does, because He has graced us with innumerable miracles through them for centuries.

I’ll try :)
St Gregory the Sinaite said, "Never accept any physical or spiritual appearances, either outside or inside yourself, even if it might be an image of Christ, or an angel, or some Saint, or if light should appear, or imprint itself in the mind...Be attentive, that you may not come to believe something, even if it is something good, and be not captivated by it before consulting those who are experienced and are able to analyze the matter, so that you do not suffer harm...God is not displeased with the person who is attentive to himself, even if he, out of fear of deception, does not accept even that which is from Him, without consulting and testing..."

May the Lord bless you on your journey! If you let me know your Christian name, I would love to pray for you.

Don't trust dreams. One Saint suggested to forget dreams as soon as possible. It is better to ignore a dream from God than to entertain deception from a demon.

Acts 2:17
“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

Job 33:14-18
For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, then He opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; He keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword.

Joel 2:28
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

Genesis 40:8
They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”

And He said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.

Genesis 20:3
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.”

Daniel 7:1-28
In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ ...

Matthew 2:13
Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ ...

She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Matthew 1:20
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Proper hermeneutics doesn't call for the listing of scripture out of context. Proof texting is a horrible way to base your theology. These lists makes you feel like you're actually doing the "hard work" in the conversation but they're actually a sign of your avoidance of the issue. I encourage you to narrow it down and actually wrestle with the question instead of utilizing the same ole cultlike methods of deflection.

Did your dream terrify you with warnings or turn you aside from wicked deeds and pride? Or did it make you feel warm and fuzzy inside?

Joel 2:28
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

We don't deny that God can speak to us in dreams. He's just not the only one who does.

Genesis 40:8
They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”

How do you know the figure in your dream was Christ Himself, if you weren't able to see His face? Did you interpret this for yourself, by yourself? Do you know who else is able to appear as an angel of light?

Numbers 12:6
And He said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.

Are you claiming to be a prophet of God?

Genesis 20:3
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.”

Seeing as we do not deny dreams, this is only relevant if you happen to be the Abimelech spoken of here...

It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’

Ah, Daniel — a most-exalted prophet of the Lord, seer of the end-times, interpreter of dreams, herald of the Messiah's birth! Are you him?

Matthew 2:13
Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

Joseph the Betrothed, the guardian of the Saviour, did indeed receive an angelic message in a dream.

Daniel 4:5
I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me.

Did your dream do either of these things? Why or why not?

Matthew 2:19
But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

Daniel 2:28

Half of these are requotes or otherwise bring us to the same points, and other half are entirely irrelevant based on who you are (or rather, are not) and our already-professed acceptance of the reality of dreams. This copy-pasted Bible study word-search doesn't really prove anything (cf. what Hermit said above).

Matthew 27:19

There's some good advice in these verses, if only you have the desire to perceive it.

Genesis 28:12
And Jacob dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!

Yes, Jacob's grand ladder — the most-holy Virgin Mary!

Cant be doing with the ‘c’ word. That Theological fad is wearing a bit thin now. Let The Scriptures speak for Themselves...The Lord used/uses dreams to warn people.

Yes, Jacob's grand ladder — the most-holy Virgin Mary!
The dream was a stark warning, and it terrified me. It revealed that He never knew me!

John 1:51
And He [Jesus] said to him [Nathaniel], “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Jesus is The ladder
