The Republican Party is at a crossroads. McConnell will not be part of the Trump Party. He got his judges at great cost. Now, he will do all he can to salvage Senate seats for non-Trumpers.

If he doesn't do all he can to arrange a conviction at the impeachment trial, McConnell can stand in line and wave his Trump flag, and be prepared to fall on his sword for his glorious leader Trump when called on to do so.

McConnell will see if he has the votes; he may not. If not, he will need to do all he can to salvage seats of non-Trump Republicans.

The historic Republican Party is now dead, and McConnell probably knows it. It's the trump party ... and a few "rinos" stumbling around like the walking dead. Of course, McConnell has looked that way for a while now.

Elsewhere we’ve seen that the legislative filibuster is intact...one wonders what McConnell gave up to secure that?
McConnell refused to allow the committee chairs to take their place unless Schumer promised not to get rid of the filibuster. Schumer said no, and also said that there would be no negotiation on the point. McConnell eventually gave in. The Democrats are free to get rid of the filibuster with votes. It should be noted that 2 Democrats have already pledged to vote no on any bill to get rid of the filibuster.

None of that will happen. Trump isn't forming a new party. The Senator who is supposed to preside in the place of Chief Justice Roberts is in the hospital. And McConnell knows that the votes aren't there for any conviction on the impeachment charges.

That's why (I suspect) he isn't making an issue of the unconstitutionality of the proceedings or the other illegalities involved with this travesty.

???
Nothing has happened with regard to the filibuster. It was "intact" now as much as it was a year ago. What is keeping it "intact" is that two Democrats have pledged not to vote to abolish it.

Why would this be the case, where is any evidence for this? Trump has a huge following and McConnell is not a fool.

McConnell didn't give in. Democrats pledged to vote no on any bill to get rid of the filibuster. McConnell won, and hopefully he will give up something in return. Is there any hope in the impeachment trial?

The funny thing is that if Trump is convicted, Trumpers who are running for presidential elections in 2024 will gain most by eliminating Trump from the competition. But they're not supporting the conviction!!!

Yes, Trump is the reason we now have two Democratic Senators from Georgia. Hopefully Trump can have a similar influence on the 2022 elections.

Sorry but Biden will be responsible for the Republicans regaining the House and Senate.
