I suppose the skeptic is afraid of weird.
Not really; as the book points out, plenty of weird and strange things turn out to be true. The point is to use rational methods to make rational decisions about claims. This requires both critical thinking and some reliable knowledge of the subject in question - which often means some study.

Without the application of critical thinking and basic knowledge, you're vulnerable to woo, pseudoscience, hucksterism, baloney, bunk, flim-flam, magical thinking, superstition, and wishful thinking.

As the saying goes, "Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out".

1 Corinthians 13:11.
