Personally, I like Robert Heinlein's method for war. Only people that are eligible for military service vote for war. If it is passed by majority, everyone who voted yes is required to sign up for service for the duration.

I slept many times wherever I could in the army. The ground works just fine.

The problem is these poor souls are worse off than sleeping somewhere in the woods or countryside. They are in a public place, sometimes with only one bathroom for several thousand. I'm sure some of them had to pee in some corner when no civilian was looking, but then there is the issue of going number 2, where you can't just dig a hole and do your business. And lots of folks complain etc. Which is how, I heard the whole thing started, some bureaucrats complained that they saw some not wearing masks while in the Federal buildings. Most were very good, wearing them at all times except when eating, but nevertheless that was supposedly, why they got booted to the garage.

While I understand soldiers sleep anywhere on the battlefield and that there are worse places for them to sleep.

I do see a problem with the lack of respect for the soldiers not given a place better than the garage to sleep.... not because it SOOOOO terrible..... but because they AREN'T on a battlefield.

I dont think the soldiers should be complaining about it, but rather the civilians.

Again, for the respect they deserve. Yes, they are soldiers, a garge isnt the end of the world.... but they arent on a battlefield... the citizens should demand more for the treatment of our military while they are at home.

A well lit safe parking lot would have definitely been a step up.
I’m glad to hear ya’ll were willing to sleep outside in the cold. I can’t help but think they could have put them in hotels. The hotel industry is desperate for business right now! Although I’m anti much of what the military does, if it were up to me they’d all make at least $150k/yr with lifetime benefits and lots of time off to alleviate the stress of the job.

According to the report on the news tonight, they didn't have to go to the garage until they were ordered out of the Capital. It's not clear who gave that order according to the report. It could've been the DC Security Police.

Yikes why so few bathrooms?! That’s ridiculous.

They could have housed most of them in the Trump hotels, I hear those places have plenty of room.

When Trump (who was not president anymore) heard that the military had been kicked out of the Capitol and told to shelter in the garage, he offered his hotel for them.

One of my kids was deployed to DC and had to spend time in the garage. He was careful to not complain, but it IS winter in DC, so the garage was cold and laying down on the concrete was cold. I asked him about whether he could use the sleeping bag they issued to cushion from the cold concrete but he said no way could they stand there on post with another 10 pounds for the sleeping bag in their packs - their packs and weaponry were already very heavy. Further, he said that it would take so much time to roll back up that more of his break would be spent taking it out and putting it away than he wanted to deal with. He never took it along for his shift.

They had to carry so much heavy gear for several hours that when they were able to take a break they needed to get off their feet and rest. Their shifts were 11 hours long.

He said that worse than such little access to the bathrooms was that the parking garage didn't have a source of water. And, we can easily realize they had no ability to charge their phones in the parking garage either.

Again, he didn't complain, but as a military mom I feel that deploying kids in their own country to those conditions when there are so many federally owned places they could have sheltered more comfortably, with water and toilets, was very disrespectful to them.

I thought they were just waiting to leave. I had no idea we were going to keep a military force in Washington.

If our countries ever go to war with each other, let's solve it by getting our country's leaders to duke it out inside of a boxing ring. Better to lead by example, right? :p

Have to warn you though, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau does have some mixed martial arts experience.[1][2] :p

  2. YouTube.com/ La PlantB - Justin Trudeau vs Patrick Brazeau Le combat de boxe

I wish. Those days are gone. Leaders hide behind people now. I always told my employees that I would never ask them to do anything I wouldn't do and I meant it.

Photos Emerge Of National Guard Living In Parking Garage In Democrat-Run D.C.: ‘We Feel Incredibly Betrayed’

I don't know, but when I served in the Marines, we would've expected to sleep in a garage or out in tents.
There are more details in the following article from the Military Times. It is just so typical of the Washington establishment elite. Nancy Pelosi wanted “crew-manned machine guns," it was incredible, all of this as Antifa was vandalizing and attacking federal property in Portland:
National Guard troops kicked out of Senate are back in Capitol following outrage from lawmakers, public

It struck me this was an emergency, and the planning is not with accomodation in hotels etc especially with covid restrictions.

How is this a betrayal? Is civil war a better option?

How are COVID restrictions relevant to keeping them piled on each other in a parking garage in the middle of winter, or piled together somewhere that is heated and has bathrooms, water and electricity?

Second, perhaps you missed my post, but there are many federal properties in DC altogether with miles of hallways and perhaps auditoriums that had bathrooms and water. Such as the access they initially had in the heated capital building. In my opinion it shows profound disregard and disrespect. The opinion is mine, and I am not speaking for my son who is deployed there.

And what does civil war have to do with the parking garage????? Yikes.

It seems to have been up to the state, at least to some extent. Someone asked the Governor of NJ about NJ National Guard who were there. He said that they slept in a hotel.

Yes, they were bused back and forth to hotels (not necessarily in DC) after their shifts, but they had 12 to 18 hour shifts of standing with very heavy gear. In a shift that long and with the heavy gear, you have to be able to get off your feet for breaks and avail your self of the bathroom... get a drink of water, etc.

While facilities were available that were heated and had bathrooms and water fountains, the troops had to rest in the cold, unheated parking garage that had 2 bathrooms for several thousand people and no water and no electrical outlets.
