I've not found that to be true but, like I said, I don't listen to politicians much. Obama had been president for almost two years before I actually heard his voice, though I had read transcripts of some things he said.

While this a veritable boon for one’s sanity, it tends to be detrimental for discussing politics in a thoughtful manner.

I won’t assume it about you, but I think a lot of people only watched clips of Biden gaffes and didn’t watch his speeches, so they just assumed he was all gaffes all the time. He gave a speech to our union on zoom (we campaigned for him hardcore) and he was an amazing speaker that day, very inspiring.

He would randomly walk through this ego boost followed by the enemy.

It works by making us the loyalists and you the enemy. Content does not matter.

All cults do this, your wonderful in the group, so betray the group, that's treason. This is a clue this is not democracy or normal politics but extreme tribal feudalism.

Both sides use it. You are a privileged white male so irrelevant unless you agree, just like a democrat is a commie.

No, Biden isn't the one who goes off on wild, rambling, incoherent tangents - that is Donald's trademark. Look up Biden's gaffes - there are plenty, but they are not word salads.

And don't get me wrong. When Biden won the nomination I said to my friends that when you nominate a candidate, you want one that is strong where the other guy is weak. And Trump's biggest weakness is his speeches. So they selected Biden?! Seriously?!

I thought Trump's biggest weakness is his uncontrolled lying about matters great and trivial. That or his malignant narcissism. Or his compulsion to insult others while puffing himself up. Or his complete lack of empathy for other people. Or...well it's hard to choose what is the worst out of so much that is deplorable.

What I have heard is that the right tends to focus more on 'purity' and 'tradition', while the left tends to focus more on 'equality' and 'rights'. Both philosophies can lead to policies that could be considered authoritarian.

Yes, Biden got a historical fact wrong. While bad, I don't find it nearly as bad as Trump talking about Washington's army, how they "manned the air," and captured airports during the Revolutionary War. After which, he mistakenly talks of "nothing but victory" at Ft. McHenry -- which would be the War of 1812.

Well "Purity" would assume that there is a definitive source of morality.
If a country is to support all people of all cultures and religions or non religions, then what is the common definitive source of morality?

We don't need a nanny state, we don't need government telling us how to be "Good"
But as a society, we do need rules to stop us all from focusing on being mean to each other, especially if we want a safe and functional and thriving society.

We do need some rules
e.g. don't kill each other, don't steal from each other.

These basic set of enforced rules don't make us an authoritarian state.

An Authoritarian state is on where we have to please The Authority.
Where The Authority (or president) is the one who shall be obeyed at all times.
Where the whims of this Authority require no overarching values or premises (such as a constitution)

But if you restrict your government to things that are constitutional or meet the standard of safe, and thriving society. Then all laws must meet that standard, and hence can't be just at the whim of the President.

Avoiding discrimination helps toward making a society safe and thriving.
Making everyone believe in the Christian god does not help towards a safe and thriving society.
Outlawing abortions does not help towards a safe and thriving society
Outlawing murder and theft do help towards a safe and thriving society.

When people speak live and address questions, in front of an audience, in front of a camera, it is possible that they make gaffes. Both Biden and Trump have made may gaffes.

When you write a document, you proof read it, you fact check your own statements etc. When you fire off a tweet, you might do some of that, but the standard will be less. When you are answering live questions, it is much more difficult, you try your best, but people aren't infallible with perfect memory and instant recall.
When people make mistakes and later correct those mistakes then I find that commendable, but sometimes it is best to ignore them, unless it is a significant mistake.

There are times that people may say the opposite of what they mean, like when Biden said
“We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics,”
That was obviously mispoken, and it doesn't help when the people on the right try to make out that Biden supports voter fraud. It shows no grace from their part, just trying to win arguments or stir people.

Trump's misspellings and poor grammar and waffling going off on tangents and coming back in circles, does make it very hard to listen to him, to understand him, but so what.
But we should get concerned when the president suggests:
Shooting immigrants in the legs
Nuking hurricanes
banging the heads of arrested people
Calls to lockup political opponents who have not been charged of a crime
Mocking people and name calling
Lying about the deadliness or contagiousness of a pandemic
promoting unproven cures e.g. HCQ, injecting disinfectant...

We do need to try and seek to understand what the president means to say, rather than whether they misspoke or make simple gaffes.
Biden will have his moments to prove himself.
I'm fine for Biden to be called up for saying stuff about FDR and tv. He was obviously wrong and just making stuff up, or perhaps confussed about his memories of this situation. It doesn't mean that he is senile or unfit for office, but it is something at the time that he should have been called up on.

Listening to Trump is easy if you love him. It is all about the emotional interaction, nothing about facts.

Rational people expect a list of positions, agendas, actions. It drove me nuts to get nothing, but I was not the audience. It's more a fan site, hero worship, listen and look at me, I will deliver. I have delivered the best ever .....
The moral back drop was the enemy could be hurt, physically, or locked up ..... Extending this further was not yet started, but followers had no problem going to treason, execution.

National socialism sounds so inclusive with the same feudal loyalism.....

To do business you need integrity, my word is my bond.
To provide safety, lack of harm to others you need to define harm and remove those that do harm.

The debate is which harm is actionable, which not. This defines a culture with social rules. Some work, some prosper psychopaths.

The left hold power groups define the struggle, and blame, whole the right personalise around an individual.

Democracy desires discussion and debate, which by their nature destroys the illusion of individual perfect leader or the fight of one group against another.

Jesus speaks to all these issues.

It doesn't help me other than to point out that they didn't do what they said they would do. I don't like to play that game so it's really moot.

The only time what they say matters to me is when their words are legally actionable, like the current attempt to impeach Trump on incitement. Then I need to go back and read the transcripts or watch videos, which brings us to things like this:

And the left wants to force women's sports to allow biological men who claim they are women to compete. and the left wants to force organizations who are against abortion on demand on religious grounds to perform abortions, and the left wants to force you to bake the cake. And the left wants to FORCE you to participate in diversity that goes against your religious belief and the left wants to allow you to kill a human baby even at birth.

I suppose inappropriate behavior with animals and pedophilia are diverse as well. So anyone against those practices is on the wrong side?

The sickest part of the leftist agenda is the destruction of any moral values, which is rather comical because without a God or higher power directing your moral values, you have no moral values. The word, "moral" is as useful as calling a rock a male or a female. The concept doesn't apply. You are your own God and you decide what is right or wrong. It's also known as situational ethics. It usually falls into "the ends justify the means."

And since this is the exact opposite of what Christianity teaches, you can see why the two sides are a bit at odds, as they have been since Eve ate the apple.

Yes, this is the core of the problem. It always has been. And always will be until the Lord returns.

BTW, it's important to know that we are free to discriminate. It is the government that is not. That's why Jim Crow was abolished. It was the GOVERNMENT that was FORCING it. Meanwhile, I discriminated when I chose what car to buy, what woman to marry, what career to pursue, where to live, what movies to watch, what people to hang around, etc. We all do. A happy and free culture, by definition, ensures the individual citizens are free to discriminate in all their decisions.

Any system that tries to control that is the enemy.

I've watched some speeches, and I just don't get it. I remember how Obama was also considered a "great speaker", but it became a standing joke that when you took away his teleprompter, he was dead in the water. And if he tried to wing it it was only worse.

I think I'm immune to it. The only time I voted "for" a candidate was Ronald Reagan in 1980. I did listen to a few of his speeches and I was not moved emotionally, but I did think, "well, we'll see if he can pull this or that off."

Biden is a known quantity. His speeches move me as much as a wife beater telling his wife he's sorry and won't do it again. Look up "Bork".
