Russians help Parler promote violence in America.

I disagree. It's a transaction between two businesses, one of which happens to be in another country.
Odd that the "one of which happens to be in another country" doesn't happen to be in Germany, or Canad, or Japan, or Australia, don't you think?

Why does it always seem to circle around back to Russia?

Why does it always seem to circle around back to Russia?

So that we're distracted by it and don't look to see what's going on in China.

Current narrative:

Russia: Bad!
China: Meh

Sad when Russia cares more about our 1st amendment than our own country does. :/

Except they don't. They simply wish to continue to divide us as a nation and incite violence in our country. I assure you if Parler was trying to spread misinformation about Putin, or incite violence in Russia, they'd shut it down in a heartbeat.

How do you know this? What is their motivation? Where is the proof?

Which part? Parler's content speaks for itself which is what led to Parler being dropped by Amazon and Apple. Putin's been know to assassinate and jail public dissenters both inside and outside of Russia. Motivation is almost always related to a desire for power or money.

I think you have already "assured" us of that, but it still doesn't make this particular piece of disinformation be true, not any more than the fictitious Russia Russia Russia plot that was concocted as a way to remove a duly elected president of the United States from office.

Because the level of regulation in Russia is far more relaxed. A lot of hackers use Russian-hosted servers.

However it doesn't mean that the country itself endorses every action taken by businesses within the country or businesses abroad making use of services that exist in Russia as a result of less regulation.

The same argument could be made about tax havens. Just because people funnel money through banks there as a result of nefarious business does not mean the government supports it.

Pretty much anything intended for illegal use is hosted in Russia because there are plenty of services providers that do not keep logs.

This is not to be seen as an endorsement by the Russians, just a service many Russian hosts offer that is par for the course given Russian attitudes towards many things.

That said, that information hosted will almost certainly be gathered instantly and continuously by the Russian government.

The site can be used for illegal or illegal purposes, so by the usual standard in Section 230 cases they are probably shielded from liability except for the usual exceptions of copyright, human trafficking, child exploitation material etc. They are hosting other people's speech, not their own.

And yes, it does not mean cooperation with the Russian government. It probably just means no one else would provide the service they needed.

Also, from the article, they may be providing some other service than hosting (given their name, security services probably).

A spokeswoman for DDoS-Guard said the company was not hosting Parler and declined to comment on what services it was providing to the social media app. It confirmed it did store customer data as part of its offering.

Parler’s domain name is now registered with Epik Inc., a website services company based in Sammamish, Washington, according to public records made available by internet regulator Icann. Epik is also the domain registrar for Gab, another less restrictive social networking site popular with the far right.

The court filing in the Parler vs. Amazon Web Services case makes the following claims in relation to this:

https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.wawd.294664/gov.uscourts.wawd.294664.21.0_2.pdf

And AWS has confirmed that none of the arrested participants in that unconscionable attack (who had been publicly identified as of the filing of this action) even had a Parler account, much less used it to “incite, organize or coordinate” the attack.

After Twitter banned President Trump on January 8, the increased new users and activity caused Parler to go down for seven hours, resulting in a backlog of 26,000 instances of content that potentially encouraged violence. Peikoff Dec., ¶ 13; Matze Dec., ¶ 9. However, over the next two days,Parler was able to systematically remove almost all of this content, which progress was reported to AWS, and within 48 hours by the end of Sunday—when AWS shut Parler down—Parler had removed all but some 1,000 problematic posts. Peikoff Dec., ¶ 14.Parler also identified additional steps it was taking to quickly identify and remove problematic content. Peikoff Dec., ¶ 15. Indeed, AWS had known since mid-December that Parler would be adopting in 2021 an Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) system that would pre-screen inappropriate content, which had shown promising initial results, and there was discussion of Parler adopting AWS’s own AI system.

The woman killed by law enforcement when she forced her way into the Capitol Building, Ashli Babbitt, did have a Parler account, but it had not been used since November. Id. She also had a Twitter account that was in use the day of the riot, January 6, 2020. Ex. D. Even the government claims that the attack was coordinated in part by Twitter.1 And claims reportedly showing Parler users being involved in the Capitol Riot because the metadata on videos uploaded to Parler reveal the location where they were recorded misunderstandthe evidence: Videos recorded by others, shared, and then uploaded by a separate Parler user will still show the original video location, even if the Parler user wasn’t there and didn’t record the video. MatzeDec., ¶ 4.

One of the other threads by Essential Saltes noted that they had cooperated with identifying a suspect who did not travel to DC but had been arrested for planning.

But as of the writing of that filing they claim none of the people arrested in the DC riots had accounts on Parler.

As to the metadata, their explanation may make sense, but if anyone uploaded their own video then that would not apply.

Parler does not allow illegal content. Here is reporting some time back about their rules:

Parler’s new policy: No poop, no inappropriate content, no murder

Another rule communicated via Mr. Matze is, “You cannot threaten to kill anyone in the comment section. Sorry, never ever going to be okay.”

“If ever in doubt, ask yourself if you would say it on the streets of New York or national television,” Mr. Matze added.

One would have to consider the massive influx of new users the "alternative platforms" got in a relatively short amount of time.

For an established platform (that grew at a normal rate), they had time to build up funds/advertisers/etc... to scale their moderation systems. (I touched on it in another thread, but language understanding tools like AWS Lex and Azure LUIS are quite expensive).

Obviously it takes time to acquire new advertisers and funds...

Parler went from from 1 million users in June (many of which were "inactive" users), to 2.5 million by the end of July, and then a huge influx of users in a matter of days following Trump's twitter ban. (they moved to the number 1 spot in terms of app store downloads in the day following the twitter ban)

They're simply not going to be able to ramp up their moderation that quickly.

Yes, and part of the problem was that the site went down for a time. In post 36 I cited the arguments put forth by Parler in their legal filing.

They got an influx. They moderated 25 of 26 thousand posts in 48 hours, which is a huge amount. It also indicates they had started using AI, and were even talking with Amazon about potentially using AWS' own AI systems. So it doesn't sound like they were unwilling to deal with it.

It looks like the Russia issue will be short lived.

DDoS-Guard To Forfeit Internet Space Occupied by Parler | IT Security News

Parler has since found a home in DDoS-Guard, a Russian digital infrastructure company. But now it appears DDoS-Guard is about to be relieved of more than two-thirds of the Internet address space the company leases to clients — including the Internet addresses currently occupied by Parler.

DDoS-Guard To Forfeit Internet Space Occupied by Parler — Krebs on Security

The pending disruption for DDoS-Guard and Parler comes compliments of Ron Guilmette, a researcher who has made it something of a personal mission to de-platform conspiracy theorist and far-right groups.

DDOS was providing similar in between services as Cloudflare, etc.
