Does anybody here know a lot about computers?

I'm craving for conversation. I haven't really been able to talk computers with somebody in a really, really, long time. In fact, the people who molded me into the nerd I am today are long deceased and with Christ now. I've been working on and building computers since I was a child so odds are, I know a lot of what you're talking about. Whether its the old stuff or the new stuff. I usually keep up with the latest in computing and I haven't taken apart a computer and put it back together again for the fun of it since I was still in high school. Nowadays my builds are so expensive I don't really want to do that in case something goes wrong. In fact, I don't even build my own rigs anymore my wife does (She knows nothing about computers aside how to build them because I taught her when we met.) I... miss it.

The closest I came to an actual conversation was when my oxygen guy was delivering my oxygen he noticed the builds I made for my wife and I and commented on them and we talked for like 15 minutes on computers and about 10 years ago I almost got a job at a computer store because of my knowledge of computers but the owner ended up going bankrupt and went out of business. But, that doesn't really count.

I'm not really a member of any tech forum so, I don't really get to speak my "Japanese" with really anybody, I have to keep it hidden and just repair my parents laptops when they call me about once a year with problems. Or when my dad can't learn how to reset a router/modem and just calls me to spend 3 minutes at his house to reset his modem. It's... boring.

Can we please have a conversation for a while?

i wouldn't call myself an expert but i have been building computers soon after i bought my first one in 1986. Computers were a rarity then, hardly anyone owned a computer. i know i wanted to increase my computers ram from 640Kilobyte to 1 megabyte and that was going to cost me a 1000 dollars. My computer run at an incredibly low 6 MHZ speed, and a single core CPU with two floppy drives. My first computer had just two colours.

Today i have an 8 core Intel processor running at 4.8 Ghz, with 16 Gigabytes of ram and Terra bytes of storage and a 4K graphics monitor. Mainly for gaming, but i do some home video editing.

Not that i am into gaming any more, lost interest years ago, but our grand kids loving gaming and they love coming to our house to play all the latest games i installed for them.

I was born in 1986 and I think we got my first computer when I was six or seven right around when the internet came out (Ah the 8 kbit modems they were so darned slow). So odds are I'll mostly know what you're talking about if you talked about computers from the year I was born. How was Windows 1.0 and 3.0? I remember 3.1 was a real hassle to navigate compared to Windows XP, 7, & 10 today or even Windows 98 which was known for BSOD'ing all over the place. My parents won't upgrade from Windows 7 despite all of the great features I keep telling them about W10 and even after Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 they still refuse to learn a new OS.

I also tried Linux as a teenager (Don't remember what version but it was in the early 2000's somewhere around there), I didn't care for it very much. I could have my Yahoo Messenger like I wanted at the time because my friend from right across the street would rather talk to me on Yahoo messenger than on the phone or just walk across the street to talk to me. Lol! But anyway, Linux didn't have support for some program I forget what it was and I didn't want to use it anymore. I haven't tried a different OS since.

I have a i9 10850k now, which is a 10 core, 20 thread processor. I'm assuming you're using a good 9th gen or lower 10th gen or an AMD processor? Intel really made their 10th gen processors really affordable last year so I decided to pick one up and give my wife my old one when I finally built her a computer that wasn't from the mid 2000's, plus it was on sale to boot. I paid a little over $500 for my 9th gen i7 9700k (which is now my wife's processor.) and my 10850k was a lot less than that. I think I paid under $400 for it? I can't remember. Super cheap for a processor today though. Their 10th gen 8 core 8 thread processors were very cheap too, under $300. I haven't really seen processors so cheap in a really, really long time. 2000's or so?

Did you know that Intel is releasing their 11th gen just as cheap sometime this year? I'm considering getting one assuming COVID doesn't make getting one impossible like everything else these days. Their 11th gen is going to finally support PCI-E 4.0 among several other nice technological advances and I have a 4.0 video card (3060TI), so I'm really excited for the release.

What's your take on ASUS as a company? I've been a fanboy since the mid 90's. They really make fantastic motherboards. I really didn't start buying any product that wasn't ASUS or Corsair until I started trying to come up with the funds to build my wife a computer she desperately needed. I ended up building myself something and giving her my old one.

I learned in the early 2010's not to buy a motherboard that wasn't ASUS. I bought at least 10 motherboards (I think it was an acer motherboard? I forget) before I finally got a working one and even then it only lasted me a few weeks. I never bought another motherboard again. But I discovered that TP-Link makes decent routers over ASUS and they're hundreds less and I bought a Silversonic PSU for my wife that's been doing pretty decently so far. I dislike that it only has a 5 year warranty over Corsair PSU's having 10 years but thanks to COVID Corsair PSU's are far, far too expensive now.

I have built many computers over the years for people. I am self taught.

But, not kept up with tech for the last few years though.

Neither had I. Up until last year or so I didn't know that M.2 SSD's were a thing (It's a brand new slot in a motherboard that supports SSD's that are significantly faster than the ones from the 2010's. Computers run in milliseconds now and not seconds.). I hadn't known that DDR4 ram was out or that computers now support up to 256 GBs of ram. Only the rich can afford it because its over $1,000 for a kit but, computers support it.

With PCI express 4.0 being a global thing this year, SSD's will now run on PCI-E 4.0 now making them even faster than the M.2 ones. SATA is now as of this year a thing of the past. All devices like Hard drives ...etc will be either USB-C or PCI-E 4.0. I started to notice that when I built my computer a few years ago and you had to rig your BIOS to even support SATA devices. With the new Processors and Motherboards coming out this year I don't think they'll even support SATA at all. I heard that anyway.

Let's see what else is new, within the last few years. Umm, I think that's about it. Like I said in the post before Intel released their gen 10 processors last year really cheap to compete with AMD. Their most expensive processor is around $480 and is a 10 core 20 thread processor. Making them almost as cheap as AMD processors and quite competitive.

NVIDIA came out with the RTX 3000 series which are significantly faster than the 2000 series but extremely difficult to find unless you want to pay twice the price they're worth. They came out last September and literally sold out everywhere in seconds and no store has had any stock ever since they were and are that popular. That's about it.

i run Linux, Ubuntu 20.04 64 bit. i love Linux, especially now a lot of window games can be played on Linux machines as well. i bought a cheap gaming laptop this year which i duel boot between windows 10 and Ubuntu, but it defaults to Ubuntu.

Yes i got an Intel i9 but 9000 series, i'm very happy with its performance. Indeed the 3000 GPU series has taken off like hotcakes, most wont even buy into the 2000 series any more now the 3000 series is so much better, and cheap as well. i still have a 1660 series, not looking at updating for awhile yet. i can play a lot of games in 4K on the 1660 series, no need to upgrade yet.

This computer will have to last for the next 4 years, i might upgrade the GPU but most games don't use much CPU power, mainly GPU's are running the show.

i'm really excited about the fact that they finally are able to speed the storage devices up. For years computers have been held back because of slow reading and writing times of the hard drives. Now we have speeds of 4000 megabytes a second read and 3300 megabytes write speeds we can finally load the computers and run the computers much faster. i reckon this was long overdue. We have been stuck with Sata drives for much too long.

Peace.

Oh so the 9900x? Yup I was right 9th gen. But yeah, that's a super popular processor that people love to overclock to unbelievable limits. Just people with lots of money to blow and who like to spend $500+ a month sticking their computers on liquid nitrogen. Just... such a waste. There's a world record out now though where somebody overclocked a 10900k to almost 8 GHZ. Which is an almost 110% overclock lol.

I spend a lot of money on computers but I also give a lot to charity like every other Christian. That way my life isn't just "Hey this new worldly thing came out! Let's sink all of our money into it and not care about others! :p"

I was going to buy a 9900x but by the time I had the funds to upgrade my wife's system the 10th generation processors were out and were cheaper.

I haven't upgraded to 4k yet. I'm used to gaming at a 1440P 165 hz refresh rate and a 144 hz 4k monitor is like a grand. Just, no ty. I'm glad that 4k monitors can do that but I will never pay more than $500 for a monitor, ever.

Not to mention I get 165 FPS on most games in most areas so I like that, if I upgraded to 4k I wouldn't have that. Assuming Jesus doesn't come back by then when a good 4k monitor is affordable I'll pick one up.

Yes Nvidia released the 3000 series at such competitive prices they were amazing. I haven't seen a store have stock since September and I tried to snag a 3080 but like I said all of them sold out in seconds so I didn't get a chance, I don't think anyone got one but bots. I had to buy my 3060 ti at almost double its MSRP, but the RTX 3080 is like $1,500 right now. Not... going to pay that much on a $600 MSRP card. I can either wait for NVIDIA to make more or just wait for Corona to be over. If Corona will ever be over.

Honestly your CPU is quite decent and the only game where you might need something more is Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I just bought mine because it was a really good deal. I wouldn't upgrade my rig for several years either if PCI-E 4.0 support wasn't coming out. I'm still only considering it too, my rig is plenty fast and good enough.

Really it depends how much the gen 11 motherboards are going to be. If they're under $250 for a half decent one I'll pick one up. But if they're the cost of the processor or more, I can wait :p. There's some 10th gen motherboards that are almost $1,000 and I'm like... nope. Those extra features are not worth it.

Oh yeah they're considerably faster and don't cost a lot. Well the PCI-E 4.0 SSD's are almost $250 but that's because they're brand new technology you always pay a lot for brand new tech. Not sure on the Hard Drives and other storage I'd have to look it up. But I paid $89.99 and $119.99 for our M.2 SSDs. I remember in the early 2010's I paid more than that for the old stuff. I still have it and use it for storage lol.

I used to have parts from the good old days until my dad made me through them all out when I was still living at my parents house. I kind of follow his example now, in the spring I'm throwing out all my parts and cables that probably aren't any good anymore because they're been sitting in the back of our trailer for 15+ years. Anything that's not from the 2020's is getting chucked out or sold because I'm sick of not having any space back there because they're filled with my wife's crap from when she moved in with me and mine.

I’m going into IT, and you know that I’m in the process of building a PC. I have limited knowledge, but I think they’re interesting.

Computers are interesting, tablets too. But when it comes to cellphones or anything else? I don't care. I'm only forced to pay for a cellphone because my wife insists we have one. 99.9% of the time we don't even use it. I only use it when I have to go to a doctors appointment and have to call them to pick me up because of Corona.

That's.... literally it :p Nobody calls us, we don't call anybody. She just uses it to browse message boards all day (And not this one anymore :p)

I am more of the operating system issue kind of guy. If your computer has a technical issue with software, I'm your man to fix it. If it is more mechanical, I am not as familiar. In September I am going to college to get my IT help desk certification.

How many times have you had to say "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

Fun fact. When I die I want my headstone to say "Lived and died a Child of God." then below it I want it to say "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

If my wife and I end up being buried together I want it to say "We tried turning it off and on again, but it didn't work and now we're dead." XD

I almost needed you this morning then. I flashed my BIOS to the latest version, it said update successful restarting the computer. The computer never posted for over 20 minutes and I was afraid to turn the computer off and on again (it says not to do that)

So anyway, I ended up giving up and deciding to turn it off anyway, cleared the CMOS and tried flashing again and it ended up working the second time.

I remote into servers all day and fix them. Building our own Linux workstations was part of day 1 of training, years ago.

I understand the basics of servers but not a whole lot. I'm glad somebody knows a lot more than me on something. I know that you have to restart servers every once in a while to keep them healthy and working you can't just constantly have them on 24/7. I know that they're quite expensive too. Tens of thousands of dollars to millions. It takes a company or someone rich to afford them.

I like to tinker around with computers, not that much with hardware anymore, mostly software these days. I am looking forward to picking up Risc-v and Rpi kits to start tinkering with hardware again.

Let me know if you need assistance with anything, I am more than happy to help :)

Depends on what you get. Ours do need to be rebooted from time to time, but rebooting isn't a magic fix. Often, issues on the servers I work on can be fixed without a reboot and I need to talk customers out of rebooting.
