• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Are schizophrenics connected to a spirit world?

I am schizophrenic going on 7 years now. Does anyone think these voices some people hear are real beings in some other realm or spirit world that has opened up in the schizophrenic's mind? I don't think there is a big conspiracy to cover up that these voices are telepathy, but since mine are soo real, and they seem to have a mind or agenda of there own, I'm still thinking they must really exist. I don't know if that would make them demons or not, although they are almost always negative. When they convince me they are real people, that gives them opportunity to talk, then things get ugly. So I want to stear clear of the false belief that they are people, but I guess they are too real for me to call hallucinations.

Have you asked your church leaders about deliverance? I believe mental torment can have a spiritual component - whether or not that is the case for you, I don't know - but laying on of hands in prayer by a sensitive team of believers would be appropriate.

Such questions would require a specialist in psychiatry, who is educated in schizophrenia and how it works.

Common people's opinions on public forums will probably not help you at all.

Take the theory that helps you the most to deal with it.

That is a good question. I think they could be but since we are down here on earth with a lot of demons around us you can hear them more clearly than angels. You have guardian angels! Ask the Lord to let them speak to you so that you might hear them over the others. I think that the normal human brain is able to block these voices out as I have never heard voices in my entire life but I think the schizophrenic brain is less guarded and able to hear these beings or influences. Have the voices ever startled you or scared you or said things that you have never even thought of? If so than I think you know its not coming from you.

It’s a pain to have the symptoms of sz. You have to fight it. God gave me something that helps. Pray for something that helps from God. He had plans for me at first and maybe still does. So He didn’t leave me stranded and it still works to this day. The constant tests make stronger. Don’t give up. Every stressful thing causes problems but you can have some peace. God will never let you be destroyed. Better not bitter. You may feel like a little lost kid but he wants me to be a warrior. He loves you and this affliction can be used for good and not destruction, it has a purpose-to grow and get better in spite of it. That’s what afflictions are for to make us stronger.

There could be a connection but are you on medication? That would terrify me to hear people talking to me in my head. I would demand in Jesus name that they leave. Blood of Jesus, blood of Jesus, blood of Jesus. Do they say things to you that you have never even thought about? How are your dreams? Do you hear them there too?

I also hear voices and see things but I've never thought of them as any sort of connection to the spirit world. They're a product of my mental illness, they're not real, but the love and mercy of Jesus Christ IS real and calling on Him helps me see through their deception. It's also very important to seek the proper professional psychiatric help for them, but pray the Lord will clarify your vision so you can tell truth from the lies.

I think some could possibly be spirits, but mainly i think a lot could be our brains creating voices due to trauma - whether it be physical, emotional, mental or spiritual trauma. Which is why I think it's important to be really careful about calling something either God or an angel or demon especially on the basis of hearing alone. So many people have been proved to be mistaken over the identity of the voice they hear. For example, people thinking they are hearing from God and then harming someone because the voice said so.

Personally I'm convinced of the connection between a lot of psychosis and trauma. And just because someone doesn't remember or identify what the trauma was, doesn't mean that something didnt occur. An example could be emotional neglect which often goes unrealised but can cause trauma because a person isnt supported and helped to feel valued.

They are clearly demonic.

It also should be noted that the so called fathers of modern psychiatry, such as Carl Jung, and Sigmund Freud, got much of their doctrines from suspect sources like channelling spirit guides, hypnosis and cocaine.

I would therefore much rather take a biblical perspective than a modern psychiatric one. That's why in all the healing and deliverance Jesus did, there is not one mention of mental illness.
Illnesses were either demonic, or physical, and dealt with by deliverance from the demons or by physical healing.

I know what you mean by being convinced @OP and they do seem to be individuals. They just keep at it until reason fails. That is when it seems the top of my head opens and then there are no boundaries. Be aware of it reality doesn’t change just how you feel. I received a good naggin’ tonite by them and I lost it after five hours and came back- no harm done though just inside.
They wear me down for the sole purpose of my destruction, it’s so obvious nothing else the can accomplish but the bringing down of my Christianity. But I can use them. I am at a new low. To bolster myself in the inward parts against this or possibly torture someday. I don’t know I’m pretty old might not even make it to the rapture but maybe, because of my wife’s faith in me.
I’ve been sz for 57 years and they haven’t got me yet thanks to the precious Lord.

I struggle with paranoid delusions. Not so much voices, but images and thoughts and ideas that are in no small sense terrifying.

I have found prayer helps a lot. Make a habit out of praying to Jesus and asking him to give you peace. Once when I was doing this, I prayed Jesus would give me His peace. I felt, as though a voice saying, "You have asked for Peace. Therefore, you already have it," and the fear left. It was a blessing to hear the Lord giving me comfort.

I earnestly believe if you can make a habit out of praying to Jesus whenever you experience psychosis that this actually has the power to change your brain chemistry if done over time.
