Galatians 5
22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.

Good Fruit

43
“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. Luke 6

1
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.Psalms 1

17 The effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. Isaiah 32

33 “Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. Matthew 12

Bad Fruit

- sexual immorality - impurity - idolatry - debauchery - factions - hatred - drunkenes - jealousy - lust - filthy language - witchcraft - envy - selfish ambition - orgies - greed - fits of rage - slander - anger - evil desires - malice - deceit Galatians 5:19-21, Colossians 3:5-9

It's such a good lesson, and so important to hear!

"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
By our remaining in Him -- John 15 NIV

Seeking the highest good of others.

Love as exemplified in Jesus

John 15
9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.

Love is not based on emotions or feelings. It is a decision to be committed to the well-being of others without any conditions or circumstance. Just as God allows the rain and sun to fall on everyone so are all His creatures in His loving care, and so He expects us to be the same for each other.

Gladness not based on experience

Joy exemplified in Jesus

Luke 10
21 At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

John 17
13 But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.

Joy is more than happiness. It is not based on financial success, good health, or popularity. By believing in God, obeying His will, receiving His forgiveness, participating in fellowship with other believers, ministering to others, and sharing the Gospel, believers will experience joy.

Peace. Contentment, unity between people.

Peace exemplified in Jesus

Isaiah 9
6 For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Peace is a state of assurance, lack of fear, and a sense of contentment. It is fellowship, harmony, and unity between individuals. Peace is freedom from worry, disturbance, and oppressive thoughts.

Patience ~ Slow to speak and slow to anger

Patience exemplified in Jesus

1 Timothy 1:15-17
The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Patience is a slowness in avenging wrongs. It is the quality of restraint that prevents believers from speaking or acting hastily in the face of disagreement, opposition, or persecution. Patience is the bearing of pain or problems without complaining.

Kindness ~ Merciful, sweet and tender

Kindness exemplified by Jesus

Titus 3:4-5
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 2:6-7
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Kindness is an eagerness to put others at ease. It is sweet and attractive temperament that shows a friendly regard.

Goodness ~ Generous and OpenHearted

Goodness exemplified in Jesus

Titus 3:4-7
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared, He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Goodness is the selfless desire to be open-hearted and generous to others above what they deserve.

Faithfulness ~ Dependable, loyal, and full of trust

Faithfulness exemplified by Jesus

Isaiah 11:5
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins.
Revelation 19:11
I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.) With justice he judges and wages war.
Hebrews 3:6
But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

Faithfulness is firm devotion to God, loyalty to friends, and dependability to carry out responsibilities. Faith is the conviction that even now God is working and acting on one’s behalf.

Gentleness ~ Humble, calm, non-threatening

Gentleness exemplified by Jesus

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 21:5
“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

Gentleness is a humble non-threatening demeanour that derives from a position of strength and authority, and is useful in calming another’s anger. Gentleness is not a quality that is weak and passive.

And finally the last of the Fruit of the Spirit

Self-control ~ Behaving well

Self-control exemplified by Jesus

Luke 22:41-42
He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
1 Peter 2:23
When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

Self-control is to restrain one’s emotions, actions and desires and to be in harmony with the will of God. Self-control is doing God’s will, not living for one’s self.
