Sound doctrine is essential, which would include the comprehension that sound doctrine does not produce the fruit of the Spirit. Abiding in the Holy Spirit is The Way.
This is what Paul means when he says that we are justified by faith, not by Law.

Galatians 5:
22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Becoming an expert on doctrine can be the very thing that leads someone
to become
prideful and conceited.
If we truly abide in the Spirit, we will be led through experiences that "crucify the flesh
with its
passions and desires". This must occur to receive from the Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 1:
5
For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, for your consolation and salvation.
7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

The fruit of the Spirit is what we sow back into the lives of others, especially the Body of Christ.
James 3:18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

If we are to enter into rest, we must cross the brook Kidron, even as David's men captured
Mount Zion by way of the sewer.

I think it means we are not led by flesh, but by Spirit.
Someone in recovery can maintain their sobriety by resisting the flesh, without crucifying it.
To overcome
the flesh is to die to sin and its "passions and desires".
This is done by following the Holy Spirit.

Those who have experienced and comprehended the scriptures call this "the suffering way".
1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the
same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.

Acts 14:
21
And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned
to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,
22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying,
“We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”

Those who avoid The Way by claiming that this is works based salvation, quench the Holy Spirit.
The Way requires obedience to the Spirit in our daily walk.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

16By their fruit you will recognize them.
The topic was not discerning fruit in others, but manifesting it in ourselves.
Bearing that fruit ourselves requires us to accept the necessity for the flesh to be "crucified".

Romans 6:
5
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

Sorry for going off-topic. I found this interesting,

figs from thistles? the flesh to be "crucified"

Thistles are branches of the fig tree that have interwoven with worldly brambles from which our own crown has been woven..'our old man was crucified with Him'

Ah! Thanks, I was too focused on you writing about discernment, a gift of the Spirit, to catch that.
I rated 'useful', but I couldn't see how you got there from post #1. Yes, very interesting.

Your quite right, I went from the Spirit’s attributes that are likened to a cluster of 9 grapes on the vine to the gifts of the Spirit, that are numerous, of His individual work in sanctification. Most of those analogies (of which the Fruit of the Spirit is the pure substance) are clumped into those grapes when all seen in perspective. In this case the whole group is the concept of sanctification from all aspects.

Couldn't help but think of this verse:
Isaiah 65:8 Thus says the Lord:
As the new wine is found in the cluster,
And one says, Do not destroy it,
For a blessing is in it,
So will I do for My servants’ sake,
That I may not destroy them all.

Crucifying the flesh is putting our body (natural body) “the body that rule by sin” to death, by having Christ live in Us Not Sin...

What does it mean to "crucify the flesh"?
To not hardened our hearts when the Holy Spirit is guiding us into discipline and holiness. Not easy at times...

This gave me an idea for a better title to the thread...

Looks like a bunch of mixed metaphors ...
The title makes perfect sense spiritually. As Jesus walked in the Spirit, He was eventually led to Calvary (crucifixion)

I can testify that the following the Spirit has led me to have to die to the flesh in areas that I wasn't planning on turning over to Him.

Matthew 16: 24
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Anybody else in the Spirit out there?

Metaphor?
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me,
and gave himself for me.
