Hello, hope you are all well, keep a long story short, I have always been a man of science. I was very suspect about religion and all that. Anyway, I had a health scare about 2 weeks ago, and one night in bed I said to myself, if you can make this go away, I will follow you to the end and spread your word. Honestly, I feel so relieved and just so strange. I still have off days, but it makes me feel better inside knowing that there is someone there. This didn’t turn out to be a short Tory. Sorry. Anyway, I digress. I have no idea what I do, what support I have, what to attend etc, I just need some guidance? Thank you all. May the Lord Protect us all.

I think lots of us would agree that the first priority is to read one or two Gospels. If you’re going to become a Christian, you need to know what Christ was about. I’d suggest Luke and John. Basically Matthew, Mark and Luke have a lot of similarities, but John takes a different approach.

I’d also suggest that you get involved in a church. Jesus dealt with a group of disciples, and he said his goal was to establish a kingdom. Many of his teachings are really meant to be lived in community with others.

But that brings up the immediate problem. There are lots of kinds of church. Roughly, the likely options in the UK are Catholic, conservative Protestant and liberal Protestant. The Church of England tries to combine these, in a sense.

There’s a major difference among Christians in how we approach the Bible. Everyone agrees that we follow Jesus. For traditional Christians that means that they accept what his followers accepted, including creation of the earth in 7 days, and traditional approaches to women and to sex. More liberal Christians think we’re not locked into the culture of the Biblical authors, but that Jesus can be Lord of people living in a modern culture.

Again, speaking approximately, conservative Protestants believe it’s important to believe all aspects of the Bible. There are intermediate positions, but a real conservative thinks the earth was made in 7 days, that women shouldn’t be leaders, and that it’s critical for the Church to oppose acceptance of gays. Liberal Christians want to put Jesus’ teachings into practice, but think we can believe modern scientific views, accept women as leaders, and accept gays and other sexual minorities.

Catholics are in the middle. Generally in the UK they agree with liberal Protestants on the things I have described, but because the Catholic Church is international, they are bound by its policies to reject women as priests and to consider homosexual sex as prohibited (though privately, a majority hold the liberal views).

Aside from these basic differences, there are stylistic differences in worship, with conservative Protestants tending towards lively, informal services, Catholics to traditional, formal services. (Please don't think the contrast implies that Catholic services are boring. They can be very meaningful. They're just different.) Liberal Protestants tend to have a more academic orientation. (The Church of England has quite a variety. Beliefs of different congregations range from conservative to liberal. While their worship services typically are similar to Catholic ones, some congregations are more informal.)

Normally new Christians have become Christian because of the influence of friends. They often start with their friends’ congregation. It sounds like this isn’t the case for you. That puts you into an unusual position of having to find Christian friends. In the UK, I’d probably start with the Church of England. But everyone posting here will recommend their own church, sometimes in very strong terms. FYI, I’m a Presbyterian. In the US that’s a liberal Protestant group. I’m not sure whether that’s true of Presbyterians in your area.

Find a church and study scripture. 2 Tim2:15. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Many read other men's take on Gods Word which can sometimes be informative, yet remember there are different ideas of what some passages mean. Read it for yourself and pray, pray, pray. Try not to read it with preconceptions.
If you are sincere God will give you understanding. Pray for discernment, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and of course love, faith, patience, and more and more of His Spirit.
In Christ

If you do not know, then God is offering a free gift of Eternal Life, to anyone who believes that Jesus (in The New Testament) is the promised Messiah from the prophecies of The Tanakh if you believe this then trust in The Messiah for the free gift of Gods Eternal Life. And you will be born again and become a child of God, never to lose your Eternal Life.

Welcome to CF brother.
I would suggest reading through the 4 gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and highlighting things that feel important to you.

I don't think you can find a church right now in the UK unless it's online or I would also suggest that. But no matter how times are you can always read and pray and there is no better Christian teaching than God's word.

May I suggest a few things.
Start reading the Bible, start with the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Make a note of what you've read, what struck you and why. Also what did you pray about.

Have a look at web sites like coldcasechristianity, reasonable faith and wintery knight for arguments for Christianity.
Check out the christianityexplored web site for a church in your area and contact them, unfortunately with lockdown most services are via YouTube but contact the church/minister for advise, someone locally to discuss questions.

Interesting. What kind of health scare? Did it go away the next morning?

Now I recommend getting into God's word, praying, & fellowshipping with other believers.
Heart Problem whilst playing football, suffers from it before but it wouldn’t calm down this time and it scared me to death!

I had a similar incident not too long ago. Facing death, or at least it totally feels like "this is it" is a real wake up call. My advice to you is to pursue this and not let yourself become complacent. As you're a man of science, I recommend looking up Dr. Ravi Zacharias on YouTube explaining why he believes in the Bible based on criteria.

That's good to hear. While I've been a believer my whole life, I had become very complacent and detached, so when I was in the hospital I wasn't sure of where I would end up at the time. I'm now determined to keep building my faith and knowledge, making it so strong I'll never find myself in that situation again.

Dear Jarry Harvest, I am so excited for you. You have made the best decision of your life. You already have the basics/a relationship with your creator. Do you believe that your are a sinner and am in need of someone to pay your sin debt? Jesus the Son of God came to earth and paid the price for your sin so that your sin will no longer separate you from a full relationship with Your Father God. Read about this in your Bible in the third chapter of the book of John in the New Testament. You can call this number - 855 382 5433- for help in understanding this or ask God to guide you to a church where they can help you. I am praying for you as you begin the best chapter of your life. Remember, prayer is you talking to God, reading His Word, the Bible, is God talking to you. I pray for the fellowship of believers to surround you and share God's love with you. God bless you.

I would recommend that you look around for a church to attend, visit some and see where you fit in. I have tried my best to describe what faith in God is in the following article How to be saved by Jesus from Hell | Everybody Matters Ministry have a read and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Welcome to the struggle of faith.

The first step is to establish good prayer habits and find a community to join, plugging into a study or other small group as quickly as possible. Right now the fears are fresh and the commitment is there, but in the words of Dietrich Boenhoeffer when Jesus calls a person, He bids them come and die. This new life is one that is full of reward, but its also a narrow path. Jesus will see you through it as both author and finisher of the faith, but the battles can become harrowing. Be wary as many who call themselves Christians are the most vicious sort, though a true brother is a treasure beyond imagining.

Welcome to CF. John is a good book of the Bible to start with. It is the last of the four gospels right after Luke

Congrats Jarry on accepting Jesus to help you overcome your health concern. God loves to come near us in our time of need. You are now at the beginning of a very exciting journey of faith. Most important - Pray that God will show you the way to truth. You can start by learning about Salvation - and how Jesus came to save us from our sins and give us the Gift of Eternal Life. Find a good Bible believing church in your area and talk with the Pastor. Tell him about your experience. See if they have a new Christian's class that you can attend. I also recommend joining a small group Bible study to learn more about how we got here and what God has done for us. Since you are into science - read apologetic books like "Evidence for God" by William Dembski or "Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel. There are many more books out there for the scientific/skeptical person to believe in God and Jesus. God Bless!
