Maryland Governor Says Pentagon ‘Repeatedly Denied’ Approval To Send National Guard To Capitol

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Thursday that the Department of Defense “repeatedly denied” requests to authorize deployment of Maryland’s National Guard troops to help quell violence at the Capitol on Wednesday.

Hogan says he mobilized 200 “specially trained” state troopers and instructed Maj. Gen. Timothy Gowen, the general of the Maryland National Guard, to mobilize his troops.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Hogan from an “undisclosed bunker” and were “pleading” with him for assistance from his state and national forces, the governor said.

However, Hogan, who requires the Department of Defense’s authority to mobilize his National Guard troops, said he was “repeatedly denied” approval to do so from the Pentagon despite being “ready, willing and able” to assist.

Approval was given 90 minutes later.

Yep. I think there is going to have to be much housecleaning to get rid of Trump loyalists. There was only one oath they took seriously. I think for the attorney general it will be nearly a full time job and maybe some kind of Truth and Reconciliation Commission is necessary.

Outgoing Capitol Police chief: House, Senate security officials hamstrung efforts to call in National Guard

Two days before Congress was set to formalize President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund was growing increasingly worried about the size of the pro-Trump crowds expected to stream into Washington in protest.

To be on the safe side, Sund asked House and Senate security officials for permission to request that the D.C. National Guard be placed on standby in case he needed quick backup.

But, Sund said Sunday, they turned him down. [I believe both sergeants at arms have been fired.]

[During the riot,] “I am making an urgent, urgent immediate request for National Guard assistance,” Sund recalled saying. “I have got to get boots on the ground.”

On the call were several officials from the D.C. government, as well as officials from the Pentagon, including Lt. Gen. Walter E. Piatt, director of the Army Staff. The D.C. contingent was flabbergasted to hear Piatt say that he could not recommend that his boss, Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, approve the request.

“I don’t like the visual of the National Guard standing a police line with the Capitol in the background,” Piatt said, according to Sund and others on the call.

Again and again, Sund said, “The situation is dire,” recalled John Falcicchio, the chief of staff for D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser. “Literally, this guy is on the phone, I mean, crying out for help. It’s burned in my memories.”

The breech of the capitol building was intended by Trump.

Do you recall how Republicans went after Clinton because she didn't send the help requested at Benghazi (of course you do)? They did this exact thing that was alleged here, except it was at our own capitol, and 5 Americans died as a results.

Trump supporters, of course, continue to excuse and defend this behavior.

Oh, this barn door? Allow me.

National Guard plans to have at least 10,000 troops in city by the end of the week

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser on Monday urged Americans to avoid the city during President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration next week and to participate virtually following last week's deadly domestic terror attack on the US Capitol.

Meanwhile, the National Guard has plans to have at least 10,000 troops in the city by the end of the week, with up to 13,000 possible, as law enforcement in the nation's capital and around the country brace for further extremist violence amid the transition of power.

Speaking at a news conference Monday, Bowser, a Democrat, warned of an "immediate threat to our democracy" and said "Trumpism won't die on January 20." She has asked Trump and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf to declare a pre-disaster declaration for DC.

Did the General consider how it would look if Capitol security was breached? I hope that man never commanded troops in battle....

Indeed, I recall the report that stated US military assets were not close enough to have made a difference in saving those lives. And for years afterwards, the GOP conducted hearings - rejecting that very fact. I also recall the endless questions about President Obama's and Hillary Clinton's response.

What actions did President Trump take between 1300-1800 on Wednesday to secure the U.S. Capitol and preserve the entire US legislative body?

Hmmm... now they're saying 15,000 Guards. If it goes much higher, Biden might have a bigger inaugural attendance than you know who, pandemic or not.
In addition to DC, FBI is expecting armed riots in all 50 states. In such a national emergency, I think President Biden should cancel the inauguration.

President "Johnson was quickly sworn in as President on Air Force One in Dallas on November 22, 1963, just two hours and eight minutes after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, amid suspicions of a conspiracy against the government.[87] He was sworn in by U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes, a family friend.[88]"

...and give into the threat of violence? I think not.

In any case, D.C. is on full lock down, with 15k National Guard troops being deployed. No one is going to get anywhere close to the Capitol building on the 20th.

I expect we may see violence against softer targets in D.C. and/or around the country.

On the call were several officials from the D.C. government, as well as officials from the Pentagon, including Lt. Gen. Walter E. Piatt, director of the Army Staff.

From the same article, note the following:

Just before noon Wednesday, Sund was monitoring Trump’s speech to the crowd on the Ellipse when he was called away. There were reports of two pipe bombs near the Capitol grounds. So Sund didn’t hear the president call on protesters to “fight” against lawmakers preparing to confirm Biden’s victory. Nor did he hear Trump’s personal attorney, Rudolph W. Giuliani, urging the crowd to engage in “trial by combat,” an eerie reference to battles to the death in the series, “Game of Thrones.” Sund said he now suspects that the pipe bombs were an intentional effort to draw officers away from the Capitol perimeter.

It's been noted (by the D.C. Mayor as I recall) that the demonstrators were not expected at the Capitol as their permit was for a different area of D.C (i.e. same area as the BLM protest). That changed when President Trump specifically implored the demonstrators to go there in his noon address.
