Unlike the UK, here in the US, even in a state like New York, restrictions are much less restrictive and rules are being violated despite high and rising rates of infection and fatalities.

That's so sad. We've had some violation of rules here too, and I think some Brits in Australia have been breaking them as well, by partying on the beach. I wish people would take it seriously - don't they know how many people have died/been bereaved? I'm not talking about an odd slip up which any of us can make, but when people don't seem to realise the seriousness of the pandemic.

We're now in lockdown again but, as before, allowed outside for certain reasons including exercising once a day (Thank you Lord!). I think the main concern is the new variant and transmission rates, as well as pressure on the NHS. On a positive note the first person to get the Oxford - AstraZeneca jab has had it.

Here in New Zealand, we had a strict nationwide lockdown for 4 weeks back in March/April last year. After that, we progressed slowly through the 'levels' instituted by the Govt. to return to a more normal way of life. We are still encouraged to sign into places, but may mix and mingle and gather as often as we like. NZ has not had any community transmission for months, bar a small outbreak in Auckland last August. It was brought under control very quickly by placing Auckland in level 3 for a while.

However, the UK variant has entered NZ in a few people who have returned here. They are all in strict quarantine, as is the practice at our borders. I heard just tonight that yet another variant from South Africa is present here in another couple of recent arrivals.

Officials are saying that if those variants escape into the community, NZ may be placed straight back into level 4 lockdown, the strictest level. Praying that does not happen.

I am very sorry to hear of the terrible numbers of cases being recorded elsewhere, especially in England and America. Praying the Govts there can bring it under control.

Hi js, lovely to see you again. :)

I think it has been reported, on the BBC here, how well NZ has done in controlling the virus. Your Government seems to have got on top of it from the start. It must be great to be able to meet others again, but I agree about the quarantine measures. I think all countries need to introduce them, if they haven't already.

In the UK the NHS is struggling with Covid on top of the usual winter ills. Thankfully the effects of the present lockdown are beginning to be felt, but I think we're going to have to live with the current situation for the next couple of months. Hopefully then the effects of lockdown, vaccinations and warmer weather should help things get back to nearer normal.
