Here in New Zealand, we had a strict nationwide lockdown for 4 weeks back in March/April last year. After that, we progressed slowly through the 'levels' instituted by the Govt. to return to a more normal way of life. We are still encouraged to sign into places, but may mix and mingle and gather as often as we like. NZ has not had any community transmission for months, bar a small outbreak in Auckland last August. It was brought under control very quickly by placing Auckland in level 3 for a while.
However, the UK variant has entered NZ in a few people who have returned here. They are all in strict quarantine, as is the practice at our borders. I heard just tonight that yet another variant from South Africa is present here in another couple of recent arrivals.
Officials are saying that if those variants escape into the community, NZ may be placed straight back into level 4 lockdown, the strictest level. Praying that does not happen.
