The point of all this is that the term "rest" is a spiritual term in this context, and therefore is an abstraction that is explained by other abstractions. In order to understand the term, there needs to be some serious Bible study where the term is studied in its various contexts to see what is being conveyed in those passages of scripture. In addition, if (like in my case in the past) one has not seemed to experience what those contexts are conveying, then one should ask God for that experience

I would agree and add its the result of violating the warning that protects the integrity of the author (Christ) Changing the foundation of the word rest (non time sensitive) into one that is sensitive to time ..

Note. . . .(purple ) in
parentheses my personal comment or private interpretation.

Deuteronomy 41-2 King James Version (KJV)

Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers giveth you.
Ye shall not add unto the word (singular)which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it (singular), that ye may keep the commandments (plural )of the Lord your God which I command you.

often people stop at cliches like trust/rest in Jesus but without actually unpacking what trusting/resting in Jesus looks like. it matters to those who are struggling with unmet felt needs they desired to be met by Jesus but never really getting answers, to those the statement "trust in Jesus" becomes abstract because it's nothing something they can hold, see, hear, feel, taste or ultimately experience as long as they run on empty this continues to feel this way.

Jesus isn't really in the business of meeting "felt needs." He wants us to die to ourselves that we might live for him (Matthew 16:24-25; John 12:24-25), following his example of self-sacrifice, of putting the will of the Father above his own and pursuing it at whatever cost. Christians caught up in fulfilling their own "felt needs" are too full of themselves to be of much use to God.

is this trust a blind trust then? a trust of surrender and letting go or a trust of denying self to follow him.

Given what I described of how my trust in Jesus developed, I don't see how it could be said to be "blind."

The humble, self-sacrificing submission to God the Bible calls all Christians to, the "crucified life" it used to be called commonly, is a yielding of oneself, of one's rights, and goals, and desires to God (Romans 6:1-22; Romans 8:14; Romans 12:1; Galatians 2:20; Galatians 5:24; Galatians 6:14; Colossians 3:3; 2 Timothy 2:11). As this state of submission to Him, of death to Self, is maintained throughout each day, the Holy Spirit is free to transform the submitted, yielded, humble believer, conforming them to Christ (John 16:8-14; Galatians 5:22-23; Romans 8:13; Ephesians 3:16), changing their desires (Philippians 2:13), re-orienting them upon new, Christ-centered goals, grounding their thinking more and more deeply in God's truth (2 Timothy 2:25-26). Best of all, the one in whom the Spirit is working in this way comes to know, and love, and enjoy God in deep, rich and intimate communion.

All this to say: Submission to God inevitably leads (really, requires) death to Self. The two things go hand-in-hand in the Christian life.

Mat 11:28
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest

What is this rest that Christ offers?

In regard to Matthew 11:28-30, By saying Jesus saying that he would give us rest, he was claiming to be God by referencing Exodus 34:14, where it is God who gives us rest, by saying that he was humble and gentle at heart, he was claiming to be the second Moses that they were expecting referencing Numbers 12:3 (Deuteronomy 18:18), by saying that we would find rest for our souls, he was claiming to be the Mosaic Law made flesh by referencing Jeremiah 6:16-19, and by inviting them to take his yoke upon them and to learn from him, he was inviting them to become his disciples and learn from him how to obey the Mosaic Law. In Hebrews 4:6, they did not enter into God's rest because of their disobedience, and in 4:11, we should strive to enter into that rest so that no one may fall away by the same sort of disobedience, so again the rest that Jesus offers us is one of obedience to God through faith.

Rest from the Mosaic law , the 613 Mitzvot. He made the last sacrifice. Blessings.

Not a day of rest , a life of rest from the bondage of the law and the second death.

To rest from our self-righteous works of trying to maintain or obtain our right standing before God by what we do. To rest from a life of obedience and repentance to laws designed to modify our behavior and turn to a life of trust and dependence on the Holy Spirit to lead us in love. "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his (Hebrews 4:9-10)." Grace and Peace

In Hebrews 4:6, they did not enter into God's rest because of their disobedience, and in 4:11, we should strive to enter into that rest so that no one may fall away by the same sort of disobedience, so entering into God's rest is not speaking about resting from our obedience to God, but rather it is resting from our disobedience to him. In Psalms 119:142, God's law is truth, and in John 8:31-36, it is sin in disobedience to God's law that puts us in bondage, while it is the truth that sets us free. In Titus 2:14, it does not say that Jesus gave himself to free us from the law, but in order to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people of his own possession who are zealous for doing good works, so becoming zealous for doing good works in obedience to God's law is what it looks like to believe in his sacrifice (Acts 21:20). In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus summarized the law as being about how to love God and our neighbor, and if we trust and depend on God to guide us, then we will follow His laws, so it is contradictory to turn away from obedience and repentance to laws that teach us how to love towards trust and dependence on the Holy Spirit to lead us to us to love, especially when the Spirit leads us to love by leading us to obey God's law (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

I fully agree. Loving Him and loving each other is now the law. It is now written in our hearts and not on paper. Be blessed.

In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus was not asked to give a new law to replace the Mosaic Law, but rather he was asked about what the greatest commandment is, and the fact that there is the greatest commandment implies that there are still other commandments that are not the greatest. All of the laws that God has given are examples of what it looks like to love God and our neighbor, which is why Jesus responded by saying that those were the greatest two commandments and that all of the other laws hang on them, so they are all connected. For example, obedience to the command to help the poor looks like obedience to the command to love our neighbor, so the command to love does not replace the other laws, but rather it is the essence of them. If someone's obedience to the greatest two commandments does not look like obedience to the other commandments, then they are not treating them as being the fulfillment of the other commandments. Someone who was living in obedience to the greatest two commandments is indistinguishable from someone who was living in obedience to the Mosaic Law because they would both be following the same example that Jesus set for us to follow. Changing the medium upon which God's law is written does not change the content of what it instructs us to do.

You do realize there are 613 laws that need to be observed. Not one jot or tittle can be made obsolete. Since it is impossible , by God's choice, that we keep these laws, it is obvious that His New Covenant made it possible through the power of the Holy Spirit released by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The law of the New Covenant is written in our hearts.

Since it is impossible , by God's choice, that we keep these laws, it is obvious that His New Covenant made it possible through the power of the Holy Spirit released by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Even when the Mosaic Law was first given to Moses, there was not a single person who was required to observe all of them, and not even Jesus observed the laws in regard to giving birth or to having a period. Some laws were only for the King, the High Priest, priests, judges, men, women, children, widows, those who are married, those with servants, those with animals, those with crops, those with tzaraat, those living in the land, and those who are strangers living among them, while others were for everyone. God's righteous laws testify about His righteousness, so the only way for laws that testify about God's righteousness to become obsolete would be if God's eternal righteousness were to first become obsolete, which is never going to happen.

In Deuteronomy 30:11-20, it says that God's law is not too difficult to obey and that obedience brings life and a blessing while disobedience brings death and a curse, so choose life! So it was presented as a possibility and as a choice, not as something that is impossible. Thinking that it is impossible would mean that God essentially gave the Mosaic Law with the goal of cursing His children when in reality it was given for our own good in order to bless us (Deuteronomy 6:24, 10:12-13). Likewise, in 1 John 5:3, to love God is to keep His commandments, which are not burdensome, so saying that it impossible is denying that there is anyone who has ever loved God and denying that God's commandments are not burdensome. In Luke 1:5-6, we have examples of people who did keep the Mosaic Law. In Acts 5:32, the Spirit is given to those who obey God, so it needs to be possible to obey before we receive the Spirit.

I would agree the key (Hebrew 4) becomes how do we "mix faith" the gospel key in which the gates of hell could never prevail against .What does it mean to mix it ? Mix it with what? How can we rightly divide the parables that hide the gospel understanding or understanding of faith?

Jesus began his ministry with the Gospel message to repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand (Matthew 4:17-23), and the Mosaic Law was how his audience knew what sin is, so repenting from our disobedience to it is an integral part of the Gospel of the Kingdom, which Jesus prophesied would be proclaimed to the nations (Matthew 24:12-14). The same goes for how Peter's audience knew what sin is when he told them to repent for the forgiveness of sin in Acts 2:38. In Romans 15:4, Paul said OT writings are for our instruction and in 15:18-19, his Gospel message involved bringing the Gentiles to obedience in word and in deed, so his Gospel was on the same page in regard to teaching repentance from our sins. In Romans 10:16, 2 Thessalonians 1:8, and 1 Peter 4:17, it speaks against those who do not obey the Gospel. In Titus 2:14, Jesus gave himself to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people of his own possession who are zealous for doing good works, so becoming zealous for doing good works in obedience to the Mosaic Law is what it looks like to believe everything Jesus accomplished through the cross (Acts 21:20).

There are many verses that mix faith with obedience to the Mosaic Law. For example, in Matthew 23:23, Jesus said that faith is one of the weightier matters of the Mosaic Law. In James 2:17-18, he said that faith without works is dead and that he would show his faith by his works, so doing good works in obedience to the Mosaic Law is what faith looks like. In Revelation 14:12, those who kept faith in Jesus are the same as those who kept God's commandments. In John 3:36, believing in Jesus is the same as obeying him. In Romans 3:31, our faith upholds the Mosaic Law. In John 6:40 those who believe in Jesus will have eternal life, and in Matthew 19:17, the way to enter eternal life is by obeying the commandments. In Habakkuk 2:4, the righteous shall live by faith, and in Isaiah 51:7, the righteous are those on whose heart is the Mosaic Law. In 2 Timothy 3:1-8, those who oppose Moses also oppose the truth, being of corrupted minds and disqualified in regard to the faith. In Hebrews 4:6, they did not enter God's rest because of their disobedience, so the problem was that they did not mix their faith with their obedience to God.

Jesus Himself. He is the rest.

I once said, a year or two ago, "The tasks that are done are difficult and the tasks that are not done are easy. Therefore, no one does what is easy." The point is that Christ's "burden was light" because he did an "easy task".

Pardon me for piping into this conversation, but I see something that I think needs to be addressed. You seem to want to avoid abstracts like "trust," but "surrender," "letting go" and "denying self" are more abstract than the term "trust." Trust is so universally experienced, that it almost needs no explanation to describe it. Even a small child can be persuaded to trust someone merely by using the term, and it seems that the term doesn't even need a dictionary definition to understand it. But the terms "surrender," "letting go," and "denying self" are figures of speech and need a well-understood context in order to understand what those terms mean.

My point is that just about any term used can be seen as an abstraction. I get that the Bible uses so many different ways of describing the same knowledge and experiences, because those writers knew that language by itself is inadequate for describing the nature of relationship with God. One of the typical MOs of Christians even in the NT is to try to boil the Christian experience down to a few words, and this causes a problem in that many who hear those words misunderstand those few words because they don't have the context in which those words were put together.

The point of all this is that the term "rest" is a spiritual term in this context, and therefore is an abstraction that is explained by other abstractions. In order to understand the term, there needs to be some serious Bible study where the term is studied in its various contexts to see what is being conveyed in those passages of scripture. In addition, if (like in my case in the past) one has not seemed to experience what those contexts are conveying, then one should ask God for that experience.

There are some problems in discussing something like this in forum: (1) people are going to give short opinions on the matter without explaining the contexts, (2) various people have different experiences, and different ways to explain or interpret those experiences, which is breeding ground for confusion, and (3) people tend to get bogged down in detail and rabbit trails that add to further confusion.

I'm somewhat of a skeptic, and is the reason why I say that I have doubts that you will be satisfied with the discussion in this thread. There are no shortcuts to the Christian experience, even though we keep trying to find them.
TD:)
you're right and thanks for catching that. English is a really abstract language and it is hard to define things without using abstracts.

If I were to say I have trust in a chair the immediate action from that trust would be sitting in it and the product of trust (after sitting in the chair) would be some sort of satisfaction or comfort (a subjective product). if I refused to sit in it or sit in a way ready to fall over at any time one could question my trust (and then ultimatlety question my qualitative experience with the chair) . So in a similar way when we put trust in God (an abstract action) which has a product of [spiritual] rest (an abstract product) what does the action of that trusting look like?

the bible seems to like to unpack abstract spiritual concepts by first using a more concrete form often demostrated through the law. an example of this can be found for rest. there was no trusting happening it was simply observing the 4th day and physically resting and this somehow extends into the spiritual application of rest that Christ offers. So what Christ offers may far exceed physical rest but is the same rest that is mention on the 7th day which the 4th commandment is based on. The same can be said to follow Christ as this was the first often the invitation spoken to his disiples simply saying "follow me" and their response was litterally following Christ but Christ later expands on the request to to follow him saying we must take up our cross and deny ourself addressing the abstract qualities.

This isn't a personal crisis for me but a topic of curiosity of how people think on this subject. However there is an implicit action here to come to Jesus so he may give us rest. We are not physicaly walking to Jesus nor or we physically resting. If this means to believe, trust and have faith in Christ what action does this lead us to?

The way the bible uses the word faith it would seem that some had "no faith" and could not mix..

I would agree it has do do with obedience but how do we mix faith .What faith and whose faith? What do we mix it with ? How do we find the the hidden gospel message since all do not hear.? What is the proper prescription for rightly dividing the mix in parables ?

Hebrews 4 King James Version (KJV) Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

The rest is in coming from the unseen father not the Son of man, Jesus .in whom the father empowers to do the fathers will.. Salvation is the work of two. No Son. . no empowering Father. or vice versa no empowering father no need for a Son .In that way the father is in a greater position but not a greater person .God is one. The propmised demonstration of the two working together to bring the peace of God spoken of in Isaiah 53 had come

The calling of the father working through the prophet or chief apostle the Son of man Jesus. Jesus who declared; "not as I will but as the father" shows that Jesus has entered that rest from his own works.

The father worked in and with the Son of man, Jesus who had no power to rest of his own until the father worked in Jesus to both will and empower Jesus to do good pleasure of the father.

Philippians2:13-14 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

Jesus empowered to do the will took delight in doing the will of another .Unlike Jonas that would of rather died knowing God would forgive the Ninevites.

Jesus as the Son of man lived in a earthen body of death just as us .

We are likened as brothers, sister and mothers .But never father.

Call no man on earth father and in the same way call no man on earth good (infallible) teaching Master as Lord .One is our infallible Father as teacher The Lord in and of heaven .

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

Again the power to work out his will is not of us it includes the Son of man, Jesus . The first born of many believers the new creation. .

The Son of man as chief apostle as a prophet revealed the words of the father . (my flesh profits for zero . . John6) . It the unseen work of faith or labor of love working in a new born again creature that alone could profit.

Yes, they did not enter his rest because they did not mix faith with the Gospel and the word preached to them. The Gospel and the word preached to them called them to obey, but they did not respond with faith to what they heard, so they did not obey.

I would agree. . the Gospel and the word . Or perhaps as a suggestion in hope of building up. The Gospel. . "the Word of God", as it is written. The Word and the gospel are one in the same. Therefore rightly dividing the temporal seen with the eye, or heard with the ear as a figure of things to come or parable. . a vision or understanding from the unseen eternal God . like spoken to Peter and us.

Flesh and blood did not reveal it, it cannot. It has no power. Earthen bodies of death have no power to hear or see, the understanding of God that he has prepared for them when they receive the promise of their new incorruptible bodies

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

I would offer a verse or prescription that is useful I believe in rightly dividing and mixing faith found in parables. Parables in that way reveal the unseen giving us a hope beyond human hope to a eternal rest as new creatures.

2 Corinthians 4:1818 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Today under the Sun (the temporal) if we hear his voice (the eternal) and if we do not harden our hearts in effect faith did its work as informed in Philippians 2. it is God working in us making our load lighter. .

The power of God working in us, with us (Emanuel) giving us his unseen understanding as a labor of His love.. The blessing spoken of in Mathew 16. Two walking in agreement as one. The perfect rest of peace.

Matthew 16:17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

The problem is we are in "sinful" rest now and not burdened with doing God's will.

Can you provide clarity and should you not use the word I not we? You are not speaking for the state of we.

...there is an implicit action here to come to Jesus so he may give us rest. We are not physicaly walking to Jesus nor or we physically resting. If this means to believe, trust and have faith in Christ what action does this lead us to?

An extremely complex question, since much of the NT states what those actions are. In a nutshell, we have to practice the Christian disciplines of study scripture, pray, fellowship, and worship. We must gain the knowledge of what we are doing that is sinful and forsake those actions, and replace them with what God says is the right thing to do. We must believe that God is with us in this repentant lifestyle, that God is making adjustments in our minds (healing), so that doing the right thing becomes no burden for us.

That's partly it.
