On the other hand, I could see it being a lightning rod for the sort of craziness that happened two days ago.
I think his presence there would be more likely to hold off any riots and give some support to democracy. I am sad he will not be there.

Thanks guys, for making sure that even the mildest of starts towards having more civility around here won't take hold.

:sigh:

Your calls for civility ring hollow, and appear to go against the content of what you regularly post.

He'd much rather stay home and sulk. That is the sign of a true looser. Will anyone miss him? If I never hear his name again, or see that fat orange face, that would be Nirvana. Who cares if he's not there? Surely his supporters don't want to see him in his humiliation and acceptance of reality. I can't see them wanting him there, if he goes, he'd be disappointing them---if he doesn't go, they will view him as staunchly defending his cause. Besides, he and some of his useful idiots would probably cause a scene with their refusal of reality. Not showing up they all can still live in their little make believe world.

Does politeness either surprise or offend you?

Most of the time, the President is vilified for being tactless. But when he is tactful, he's vilified for that. Yeh, we all know how that works.

You mean like bowing to foreign dignitaries while on a diplomatic tour? That kind of vilification? If so I have a mirror for you.

I never said that he was, just that he was, perhaps, the loudest mouth leading that charge. He was the tip of that spear.

Agreed, it was an issue raised by some. There are those who think Obama's wife is a man and that he's a closet Muslim, too. Obama doesn't have to dispel every stupid rumor about him, nor should he be expected to.

I never said that Trump started, only that he was played a large part in fomenting it.

I addressed this in another post.

"I have people that have been studying it and they cannot believe what they're finding," the would-be presidential candidate told NBC's "Today."

"You have people now out there searching - I mean, in Hawaii?" asked host Meredith Vieira.

"Absolutely," Trump replied. "And they cannot believe what they're finding."

So when you say that he couldn't find anything, you're not going off anything he said, but what you imply from what he didn't say. Is that a fair assessment?
No.

Regardless, the birth certificate was produced, and Trump kept pushing the theory, so it's a rather moot point and drifting off topic.
Not unless you are correct about this point, and I think you are not.

Obama was at Trump's inauguration, despite the slander and lies Trump spent years fueling about him.
Okay, but they pale beside the much worse record of the opposition to Trump. AND, you are not taking any account of the very recent slanders being levelled against the President, even after he's lost the election. No one can assess this situation adequately without doing that. And it is not primarily about what Biden has said, yet you are confining your comparison to the two presidents.

If you were to take all of this into consideration, it would explain a lot that you aren't accounting for. Had none of that happened--the gigantic insults and accusations of only this month, January--I suspect that Trump WOULD have agreed to attend.

He certainly never said that he couldn’t find anything, but that was your takeaway, so I don’t know what other conclusion to draw.

Obama did provide the certificate and Trump did continue to hound him over it for years after. These are facts. What am I missing?

That’s your opinion, I suppose. I disagree.

Every president has the opposing party say mean things about them. We could argue all day whether Trump has had it worse than anyone else - it’s not like there’s some objective way to measure meanness. But it seems silly to say that alone is a good reason not to attend your successor’s inauguration.

I am extremely worried that we'll see something similar to Wednesday's terror attacks at inauguration.

We here should all be praying that that does not happen, believer or atheist.

Why would we do something that isn't going to work?

We can reduce the risk of that by putting some of the chuckleheads from Wednesday's invasion in prison before then.

When given the choice/opportunity to behave with grace or disgrace, Trump will always choose disgrace.

He is a pathetic human being. An example of what we as parents try desperately to avoid in our children as we drum into them the values of Grace, Humility, Honor, Integrity and Honesty.

Uh... no, they had no problem finding Obama's birth certificate in Hawaii. You live in some weird alternate reality.

And even an archived newspaper item of his birth on the "births and obituaries" page of the local newspaper.

To be fair, Obama released a copy of his birth certificate prior to being elected, back in 2008 -- to help quell the conspiracy theorists. Of course, then the demand started for his long form Birth Certificate. It didn't matter that Hawaii stated they were no longer offering long form birth certificates, or that Hawaii verified that Obama's Birth Certificate was true and valid.

OR...having an “alibi”?

Or personal safety... his people are no doubt going to be there to "protest" -- even he doesn't want to be anywhere near them.

At the very least, his followers wouldn't try anything with him in the crossfire.
