U.S. Allies found evidence Trump was planning a coup and had help

IF it can be proved in court---that is treason.

While that makes sense, here's a big picture look from comparing to other modern situations:

These days, democracies tend to collapse from piecemeal backsliding that falls short of the technical definition of a coup, but is often ultimately more damaging. A clear pattern has played out in countries around the world, including Turkey, Russia, Hungary, and Venezuela, in which leaders come to office through elections but then undermine norms, gut institutions and change laws to dismantle any restraints on their power. Eventually, their countries become dictatorships in all but name.

Yesterday’s attack, and Mr. Trump’s encouragement of it, fit well within that category. And to combat that kind of anti-democratic backsliding requires different tactics than would be used against a coup.

“We know how to prevent coups,” said Dr. de Bruin, who literally wrote the book on how to do so. “We have a whole set of actions that international organizations, military officers, individuals can use. But we know far less about how to prevent anti-democratic actions.”

A coup either succeeds or fails, usually within a few hours. Stopping anti-democratic actions like Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol requires political engagement over time.

It Wasn’t Strictly a Coup Attempt. But It’s Not Over, Either.

I can understand how a smattering of police might get out of the way in the face of an attacking mob, knowing that they would have no chance against it on their own, but we do have to wonder why security was so weak in the first place.

Check this out! Now, to be honest II don't know much about this publication. Generally, I hate politics, but this has been a most unusual election.

The supporters of President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol on Wednesday to stop the ratification of President-elect Joe Biden's election victory were attempting a violent coup that multiple European security officials said appeared to have at least tacit support from aspects of the US federal agencies responsible for securing the Capitol complex.

Insider spoke with three officials on Thursday morning: a French police official responsible for public security in a key section of central Paris, and two intelligence officials from NATO countries who directly work in counterterrorism and counterintelligence operations involving the US, terrorism, and Russia.

Maybe someone can check this out. Honestly, I am getting very tired of it all. But this just caught my eye.

The thing that gets me is that the Capitol Police has something like 2000 sworn employees. There was no reason they should have been so weak on the ground, especially since they could have asked for support from DC Metro Police, the US Park Police and who knows how many federal agencies in the area.

Yes, I just saw that on another thread! It will be interesting to see if anything comes of it on further investigation. I can't say I would be surprised if it turned out to be true.

You need to stop reading National Enquirer while waiting in the grocery line Barb.....LOL

This is a video of a lone black officer confronting the mob breaching a staircase in the Capitol building. I honestly don't think he could have done much else until he reached support. Even then, these are just a handful of officers trying to hold back a rising tide.

One of two things is happening here. Either those quoted are engaging in conjecture because they actually know nothing about what was going on within Capitol security or European security forces are spying on the United States. If it's the former this article should be ignored as it's idle speculation pumped out to people who want their biases confirmed. If it's the latter we have serious problems on our hands.

It seems to me that if this was really a coup attempt, and just not a protest gone awry, the protesters would've stored the Capital Building with guns and shooting to kill.

Perhaps it's a warning that this could happen.

My concern now is to watch what President Biden and is radical left will do. If they start
passing laws to prohibit such an event from happening again, pay close attention to those proposals. They may not be for the safety of the republic.
