The scene today at the Capitol is a complete and total outrage. Encouraged by Trump to go to the Capitol building, his supporters are now inside causing violence and the shutdown of Congress. Reportedly shots have been fired and there are numerous injuries, although early reports in situations like this should always be taken with a grain of salt because they often prove inaccurate.

I have defended Trump from attacks from his most extreme opponents while at the same time opposing him from the right, refusing to vote for him both times he led the Republican ticket. I opposed his impeachment last year because the facts were flimsy, as have all the Russian claims.

Having said that, when the Congress goes back in session today the House should immediately impeach Trump and the Senate should then immediately remove him from office. Trump is encouraging lawless violence and treason. His rhetoric is that of someone preparing to fight a violent revolution. Even though he's walking back some of it on Twitter, the damage was done at his rally. His supporters in DC are attempting to overthrow the Federal government. This cannot be allowed.

Even if Congress doesn't act, today marks the end of Trump’s 2024 Republican primary campaign. Even if he or one of his kids run, this attempted coup will prevent them from securing the nomination. Good riddance.

" Mostly peaceful protesters"

There is no need to bother impeaching Trump as he will be gone in less than a month, it takes Congress more time than that to da do anything and you would should have some reason to remove a President from office other than that a large group of his supporters imitated the tactics of protesters from last summer.

It's the fact that he directed them to go to the Capitol and do this that's the problem. If Congress doesn't act to impeach and remove Trump they're setting a dangerous precedent for the future. This sort of thing is the beginning of the end of the republic if it is not stamped out immediately.

As an Englishman, I'm praying for ALL that the integrity of the Republican party is swiftly restored.

That said, I think the majority are wise enough to not confuse the word "Trump" with Republican .

Disgraceful. Absolutely disgraceful.

totally unacceptable, they went too far.

Typical. “They” went too far. Never dear Trump who instigated this for weeks with false hopes and invitation to come to DC and be wild.

Never Trump. Poor Trump. Your President. Pathetic.

He just broadcasted. Told everyone to stop and go home.

Trump instigated this and told his people to go to the Capitol. This is on him.

Agree unreservedly with the above posts. These are the hallmarks of an abusive relationship. He's wound everyone up and then sat back and watched them go, THEN consoled them like children after the tornado of chaos.

If you are STILL a Trump supporter at this point PLEASE listen and deradicalise yourself. He's like so many people I've met from the far right groups. (People I'm not affiliated with, by the way.)

Also as mentioned at the same time still legitimizing their anger by saying elections were stolen while supposedly calming the mob.

Aftermath is going to be lengthy. I hope his brave forum warriors are rested. There is gonna be lot to defend, twist and deflect.

I am sure they will rise to challenge.

I am reminded today of a line given by one of the guests interviewed on CNN a few weeks back. I think that he was an ex-government official, but I could be wrong. Anyway, he said that he wakes up every morning and reminds himself that "we are in the grips of a madman."

I said years ago that with the level of ongoing protests disruption, name calling, etc, etc by the left that they had changed the face of what was seen as acceptable and normal and there would be a backlash. You are no seeing that backlash.

... And yet you or I will get a £6,000 fine and/or jail time for being on a train with the wrong ticket.

It's an insane world sometimes.

You must be privy to information I have not seen/heard. I don't recall Trump telling anyone to go anywhere and commit illegal acts. I think the 1st amendment is still in the constitution. That is the one that acknowledges the inherent, inalienable right to peacefully assemble.

He is the maestro of subliminal messaging. I'm yet to meet anyone better at it.

I'm not saying all of these things to be wrong or right, I just hate seeing people being manipulated like this.

How much more damage will he do by then? He's gotten increasingly crazy, trying to cajole officials into stealing the election for him. He could still try to impose martial law, and who knows what else. It's time for him to go.
