Hi all, many have not studied the Historical records on how Sunday worship came about in Christianity or have been given a biased Church historical view that is not biblical so thought this might be an interesting topic for discussion.

................

Questions for consideration...

Q1. How did Sunday enter the Church?
Q2. Where is the scripture from JESUS or the Apostles that says God's 4th commandment has now been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day?
Q3. Should we follow the teachings and traditions of men or the Word of God?
Q4. What is sin and will it keep us out of God's kingdom if we knowingly practice it?

...................

Your thoughts? Friendly discussion please

Here are some interesting historical references you might find interesting that clear up a few misconception people may have about Sunday worship entering the Roman empire and the early Church....

Historically, Constantine did not change the day of worship as many claim. According to the historical records, Constantine made a civil Sunday law that the Roman Catholic Church adopted in order to practice and promote Sunday worship over the Sabbath of God's 4th commandment...

First Sunday Law enacted by Emperor Constantine - March, 321 A.D.

On the venerable Day of the Sun let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed. In the country, however, persons engaged in agriculture may freely and lawfully continue their pursuits; because it often happens that another day is not so suitable for grain-sowing or for vine-planting; lest by neglecting the proper moment for such operations the bounty of heaven should be lost. (Given the 7th day of March, Crispus and Constantine being consuls each of them for the second time [A.D. 321].)” Source: Codex Justinianus, lib. 3, tit. 12, 3; trans. in Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, Vol.3 (5th ed.; New York: Scribner, 1902), p.380, note 1.

Now a professed Christian, Constantine nevertheless remained a devout sun worshipper. “The sun was universally celebrated as the invincible guide and protector of Constantine,” notes Edward Gibbon in his classic Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, ch. xx, par. 3.

Constantine even printed coins which “bore on the one side the letters of the name of Christ, on the other the figure of the sun god.” Arthur P. Stanley, History of the Eastern Church, lect. vi, par. 14.

Again, Constantine’s promotion of Sunday observance was part of his definite strategy to combine paganism with Christianity: “The retention of the old pagan name of dies Solis, or 'Sunday,' for the weekly Christian festival, is in great measure owing to the union of pagan and Christian sentiment with which the first day of the week was recommended by Constantine to his subjects, pagan and Christian alike, as the ‘venerable day of the Sun.’” – Stanley’s History of the Eastern Church, p. 184.

In spite of the rising popularity of Sunday sacredness, Church historian Socrates Scholasticus (5th century) wrote: “For although almost all churches throughout the world celebrate the sacred mysteries [of the Lord's Supper] on the Sabbath of every week, yet the Christians of Alexandria and at Rome, on account of some ancient tradition, have ceased to do this.” – Socrates Scholasticus, Ecclesiastical History, Book 5, ch. 22.

Another historian also confirmed this by stating, “The people of Constantinople, and almost everywhere, assemble together on the Sabbath, as well as on the first day of the week, which custom is never observed at Rome or at Alexandria.” – Sozomen, Ecclesiastical History, Book 7, ch. 19. Thus even in the 5th century, Sabbath keeping was universally prevalent (except in Rome and Alexandria) along with Sunday keeping. Many Christians kept both days, but as the centuries wore on, Sunday keeping grew in prominence and especially within Roman Catholic territories.

In 330 A.D., Constantine moved his capital from Rome to Constantinople (modern Istanbul), thus preparing the way for the Roman Catholic Popes to reign in Rome as the successors of Constantine. As the Papal Church grew in power, it opposed Sabbath observance in favour of Sunday sacredness and made the day change official in the Council of Laodicea (A.D. 363-364). Constantine's law had now been fully integrated into the Papal Church and the final step of the Sabbath to Sunday change was complete.

So around the year A.D. 364, the Catholic Church outlawed Sabbath keeping in the Council of Laodicea when they decreed 59 Canon laws. The following is the relevant Canon law: Canon XXIX:Christians must not judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day, rather honouring the Lord's Day; and, if they can, resting then as Christians. But if any shall be found to be judaizers, let them be anathema from Christ.” (Percival Translation).

Four hundred years after the death of Christ and one hundred years after Constantine's linking of Church and State by his Sunday law edict, Rome and Alexandria were the only places in the world where many of the Christians kept only Sunday and not the true Sabbath. Why was it that Rome and Alexandria were also the first locations that Sunday worship began? Because this is where the pagan practices of Babylon eventually landed after it was conquered. And what was the dominant pagan practice that the Babylonian priests brought with them? Sun worship which was done on Sun-day! See the history of Sunday worship for more detail.

So one can understand why Rome and Alexandria did not bother to keep the true Sabbath as they had not done so for 200 years. Throughout the entire history of the changeover from Sabbath to Sunday, Rome and Alexandria had worked together. Alexandria provided the philosophical reasons for the changes and Rome provided the decrees and anathemas. Constantine's help was given only to the worldly Church leaders at Rome and those Christians that resisted the errors that were being introduced into the Church met with his opposition. “Unite with the bishop of Rome or be destroyed,” was Constantine's position.

Great as were the favors which Constantine showed to the church, they were only for that strong, close-knit, hierarchically organized portion that called itself Catholic. The various [so-called] heretical sects could look for no bounty from his hands.” – Williston Walker, A History of the Christian Church, page 105.

The change of the Sabbath to Sunday was totally completed by the seventh century as the Popes consolidating their enormous power persecuted all who resisted their innovations. Did Satan use Constantine to play a key part in his plan to change the Sabbath to his day being Sunday? The answer is clear! From sun worship 2000 B.C., to Sunday worship in the Church. Satan infiltrated the Christian Church and most are oblivious to the fact that this has happened or understand the relevance. Sunday or “dies solis”, the day of the sun came from Satan worship and is his day. (more from here).

God bless

Q1. How did Sunday enter the Church?

Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday. The "new creation" began on Sunday morning.

. Where is the scripture from JESUS or the Apostles that says God's 4th commandment has now been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day?

The Bible doesn't speak of the commandments being abolished. But we do see that as the church separated from the synagogue that they began to meet on the first day of the week - which would have been Sunday (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2). That first day is also called "The Lord's Day" in the New Testament (Revelation 1:10). The Sabbath is not just a day of rest in the OT. It's a day of congregational worship (Leviticus 23:3). If the church was worshipping together on the first day of the week, they would have regarded it as the Christian Sabbath.

. Should we follow the teachings and traditions of men or the Word of God?

If we must choose one of the other we should choose God's word.

. What is sin and will it keep us out of God's kingdom if we knowingly practice it?

Sin is any violation of God's commands. Because of the grace and patience of God we can knowingly sin or even continue in sin for a season and still be in the kingdom.

I personally believe that this change from God's 4th commandment "seventh day Sabbath" of Gods' 4th commandment to Sunday has taken place in fulfillment of the prophecy given in Daniel 7:25

Daniel 7:25 [25], And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, AND THINK TO CHANGE TIMES AND LAWS: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

It is clear in the scriptures that God's saints keep all the commandments of God because they love God.

.................

God's saints keep all the commandments of God

John 14:15 IF YOU LOVE ME KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

John 15:10 [10], If you KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS: and his commandments are not grievous.

Revelation 12:17 [17], And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 14:12 [12], Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, and the faith of Jesus.

Revelation 22:14 [14], Blessed are they that DO HIS COMMANDMENTS, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

....................

Sin is defined in the scriptures as breaking God's Law...

1 John 3:4 [4], Whoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW.

Romans 3:20 [20], Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: FOR BY THE LAW IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN.

Romans 7:7 [7], What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. No, I HAD NOT KNOWN SIN BUT BY THE LAW: FOR I HAD NOT KNOWN LUST EXCEPT THE LAW HAD SAID THOU SHALT NOT COVET.

.....................

God's 4th commandment is one of God's 10 commandments that define sin when broken

Exodus 20:8-11 [8], Remember the SABBATH DAY, to KEEP IT HOLY. <Why?> Because God made it Holy for mankind and commands us to keep it as a Holy day)
[9], Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
[10], But the SEVENTH DAY IS THE SABBATH of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: <WHY>
[11], For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the SEVENTH DAY: wherefore the LORD BLESSED THE SABBATH, and HALLOWED IT.

.....................

If we break anyone of God's 10 commandments we stand guilty before God or breaking all of them

James 2:10-11 [10], FOR WHOEVER SHALL KEEP THE WHOLE LAW AND YET OFFEND IN ONE POINT, HE IS GUILTY OF ALL . [11], For he that said, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, said also, DO NOT KILL. Now if you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, YOU ARE BECOME A TRANSGRESSOR OF THE LAW.

....................

Who should we believe and follow Gods Word or mans?

God's people according to the scriptures are in every Church *John 10:16. God knows that many break His commandments out of ignorance because they do not know any better and in times of ignorance God winks at, but when he gives us a knowledge of the truth of His Word calls all men everywhere to believe and follow it *Acts of the Apostles 17:30-31.

According to the scriptures God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship him in Spirit and in truth *John 4:23-24. Christianity and the Religions of the world have fallen away from God and His Word. BABYLON (apostate Christianity) has fallen according to the scriptures *Revelation 18:1-5. God is calling his people where ever they may be to come out from follow man-made teachings and traditions that break the commandments of God back to the pure Word of God. JESUS warns us not to follow man-made teachings and traditions that break the commandments of God in *Matthew 15:3-9.

Sunday worship is a man-made teaching and tradition that has led many to break the commandments of God. There is not one scripture in all of God's Word that says Gods' 4th commandment has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday or the first day of the week as a Holy day. This is a teaching and tradition of men that has led many either knowingly or unknowingly away from God and His Word. God is calling his people back to His Word to worship Him in Spirit and in truth. God's Sheep hear his Voice (the Word) and follow him who calls them in love to love another. Do you hear God's Voice dear friend?

God bless

Hi TOL nice to meet you:).

Very true, the historical records show that the early Church suffered persecution from the Roman Empire to the Jews when then were worshiping God on the Sabbath and many met together on Sunday and other days of the week.

But where is the scripture that says God's 4th commandment is now abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day? As you have rightly pointed out there is none.

If Gods' 4th commandment is one of God's 10 commandments that give us the knowledge of what sin is and there is no scripture that says it is now abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day. Then all we have is a teaching and tradition of men that break the commandments of God that JESUS warns us about in His own words in Matthew 15:3-9.

Who then should we believe and follow; God or man?

God bless

I think we can both agree that the Sabbath command is still binding and that we ought to keep it. But we may disagree on the flexibility of that command. The 10 commandments themselves don't specify a specific day on which the Sabbath must be celebrated. It's just at the end of a six day period. For the OT Jews that was the last day of the week. It appears that the early Christians honored the Sabbath on the first day of the week. So long as we keep the Sabbath once every week I think there is some room for flexibility.

Romans 14:5, NIV: "One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind."

If you can read, then: Case settled.

Hello dear friend. Do you believe what Paul wrote? Where does it say in Romans 14 that it is talking about the Sabbath? The context of Romans 14:5 you left out is talking about eating and not eating (fasting) on days that men esteem over other days and not judging others in this regard. Romans 14 is not talking about Gods' 4th commandment Sabbath what days God esteems. The things that men esteem according to the scriptures are an abomination in Gods eyes *Luke 16:15. There is no scripture that says God's 4th commandment is now abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day. This is a man-made teaching and tradition that has led many to break the commandments of God that is not biblical that JESUS warns us about in Matthew 15:3-9 so I guess it depends if you believe Gods' Word or not or the teachings and traditions of men that have led many to break the commandments of God. Cherry picking scripture devoid of context to make a scripture say things it is not does not settle any cases or makes an excuse to sin in Gods eyes.

The sabbath keeping is considering one day more sacred right? or not observing it is like considering all days alike right?
SO, What do you read here? i'm from another country but i can read plain english.

I don't see the connection with eating there, the sentence is made so its talking about days.

Nope, there is no mention of the Sabbath in Romans 14 and as highlighted already the context you left out is over eating and not eating on days men esteem over other days. Romans 14 is over eating on days that men esteem and judging others in this regards and has nothing to do with God's 4th commandment. So what case have you settled by pulling a scripture from its context that shows it is not saying what your claiming it says? Can you show me from the scriptures that the subject matter and context of Romans 14 is over Gods' 4th commandment Sabbath? Romans 14 has nothing to do with God's 4th commandment.

You also have this one
'Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.'

If sabbath keeping was so important, would Paul has had to be more careful with his words then? OF COURSE, but no, here is just plainly talking THAT YOU that are judging people saying they do not keep sabaths, so i don't need to be judged for not keeping it.

Yea been there done that. You do know that there were many kinds of sabbaths in the old testament that were not God's 4th commandment of the 10 commandments right? The context of Colossians 2 is to the "shadow laws" that point to JESUS and the within scripture context is to the annual Feast days of Leviticus 23. These feast days had ceremonial sabbaths that were linked directly to the Feast days that were not God's 4th commandment and could fall on any day of the week. Some examples are shown here...

1. The Sabbaths of the Feast of unleavened bread (first and last day) that can fall on any day of the week *Leviticus 23:6-8
2. The Sabbath on the annual day of Atonement that can fall on any day of the week * Leviticus 23:27-32
3. The Sabbath on the annual Feast of Trumpets that can fall on any day of the week * Leviticus 23:24-25?
4. The Sabbath on the Feast of Booths that can fall on any day of the week * Leviticus 23:34-36
5. Feast of first fruits (first and last day) that can fall on any day of the week * Leviticus 23:39
6. The sabbaths (sabbaton plural) of holy convocations from the annual feast days * Leviticus 23:7-8; 21;24; 27; 35-36 that can fall on any days of the week
7. The Sabbath of the land (7 year single cycle) * Leviticus 25:2
8. The Sabbath of Jubilee - culminating of the 7x7 yearly cycles sabbaths * Leviticus 25:9-54

Both the chapter and within scripture context is to the shadow laws in the annual Feast days. The "shadow sabbaths" of the old testament are not God's 4th commandment of the 10 commandments and Colossians 2 is not referring to Gods' 4th commandment.

Your interpretation here is not biblical and makes Paul a hypocrite as his custom was to keep the Sabbath.

Hope this helps

It doesn't say shadow sabbaths or something like that, it just says sabbath day.
IF this commandment was so important you would think Paul would have told about this more clearly, but no, he just speaks actuallly that you don't need to do this.

Why does it need to say shadow Sabbaths? I have just showed you the shadow sabbaths from the old testament scriptures that where not God's 4th commandment of the 10 commandments that were linked to the annual Feast days. The CONTEXT of Colossians 2 and specifically in Colossians 2:16 is to the shadow laws of the annual Feast days. Paul's custom according to the scriptures was to keep God's 4th commandment according to the scriptures where he further states in Hebrews...

Hebrews 4:9 THEREFORE IT REMAINS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD TO KEEP THE SABBATH

Blessings.

Your interpretation here is not biblical and makes Paul a hypocrite as his custom was to keep the Sabbath.
St. Paul was a Jew. Most of us are not, and the commandmen t to keep the SAabbath was never given to us. Council of Jerusalem, right?

Perhaps that was because the Sabbath or any other of the 10 commandments were never the topic of conversation in Acts of the Apostles 15? The context and topic of conversation was; Is the Mosiac "shadow law of circumcision" a requirement for salvation?" Acts of the Apostles 15:1-2. It was this question they were seeking to answer in Jerusalem, not "is God's 10 commandments the standard of Christian living". That interpretation makes Paul confused when latter he goes to the Corinthians and says...

1 Corinthians 7:19 CIRCUMCISION IS NOTHING AND UNCIRCUMCISION IS NOTHING BUT THE KEEPING OF THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD

Yep Acts 15 says circumcision is not a requirement for salvation. What is important according to Paul is keeping the commandments of God.

Are you really trying to argue that if we love God we will not keep His commandments?

Can you see your error here dear friend?

Hope this helps

That first day is also called "The Lord's Day" in the New Testament (Revelation 1:10). The Sabbath is not just a day of rest in the OT. It's a day of congregational worship (Leviticus 23:3). If the church was worshipping together on the first day of the week, they would have regarded it as the Christian Sabbath.

Hi TOL, just a few comments here that may be helpful.

1. Firstly there is no scripture that says that "the Lords Day" is Sunday or the first day of the week. According to the scriptures though we read that JESUS is the Lord of the Sabbath day in Matthew 12:8. So according to the scriptures the Sabbath day is "the Lords day" not Sunday or the first day of the week. There is no scripture to support this teaching. It is a man-made teaching and tradition that is not biblical.

2. Secondly, the Sabbath is indeed a day of rest. Please see Exodus 20:8-11 which comes from Genesis 2:1-3. The sabbaths, and there is many kinds of sabbaths in the Feasts days of Leviticus 23 are all "annual holy convocations", meaning annual holy public gathering. These are different to God's 4th commandment Sabbath of the 10 commandments which is a weekly memorial of creation held every 7th day on a continuous cycle. The annual sabbaths in the annual feast days link directly into the Feast days and can be on any day of the week depending on the yearly cycle, unlike God's 4th commandment Sabbath which is linked directly to every "seventh day" of a continuous weekly cycle (every seventh day of the week).

Happy to discuss this further with scripture if your interested.

Saying something that is false out of ignorance is one thing, and it is excusable. But when having been shown that the thing is false, and to continue to repeat the same false thing is no longer an act of innocent ignorance.

Nobody changed the Sabbath to Sunday. It never happened. Christians have always gathered for worship on the first day of the week, all of our ancient Christian sources say this.

And anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant or a liar.
