A lot of people tell me that it's more of a reverence and respect for the lord. However this isn't just used once or twice in the bible but many many times. "Blessed are those who always tremble before God" - Proverbs 28:14. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" - Proverbs 1:7. "The fear of the Lord--that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding" - Job 28:28. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding" - Psalm 111:10. Even the people who actually met the lord in the bible. When they seen God they didn't have a simple respect for him but they fell to the ground and were terrified. I fear hell which is God's punishment. Is this the fear of the lord?

fear him enough to obey him to stay out of hell. Go all the way up those who love me obey my commands’.

Probably there's more to it than just fearing being in hell.
I think when we see God face to face the only respond is to fear him because he is God an all sovereign and powerful God, like in the case of the people who have met him in the bible, all they can do is bow down in admiration not because they fear him (like scared of him bec he is mean) but because he is due of our respect, and since because we are no match for him and are sinners we tend to be in humble submission to his presence. Also I think when we fear him or tremble before God it is when we are about to Sin / or about to do a wrong thing or decision, we think about it and gauge weather it pleases God or not, we fear him to not want to sin, to separate ourselves from sinning, if we sin we are separated from him by that sin, so by doing what is right and honorable and pleasing to him and obeying his commands that is when knowledge and wisdom comes in because we chose to do the right thing. Hope it makes sense...
