According to Bishop Barron here, the best argument for the Papacy is of its function as a "living voice of authority." So, when Roman Catholics say "Apostolic Succession" they mean only St. Peter's succession?

they mean only his in Rome. they tend to forget Antioch was founded by St Peter.

plus, that position doesn't stand up to history.

and our living authority is Christ. we don't simply appeal to the Fathers.

Plus, if my feeble memory serves, didn't Our Father Among the Saints, St. John Chrysostom spend most of his life out of communion with the Pope? I can't recall the details....I'm sure Father Matt can!

also, there is no history of a need to be in communion with Rome. at the 5th Council, Pope Vigilius was excommunicated by the East for refusing the Council, then excommunicated by the West when he accepted the Council.

Alright, so maybe a few of you who remember me are wondering why I am now sporting the Catholic faith icon or whatever CF calls it now. Well, this is TAW, so I'm not going to bring up what led me to do this, because I don't want to say anything against the Orthodox faith, but for those who don't know me, I grew up Catholic, left the Church for things of the literally satanic variety, converted to Orthodoxy and spent over a decade as an Orthodox Christian, and recently returned to my roots as a Catholic. I just want to know if I'm still welcome to participate in discussions around here. I remember the lovely @Anhelyna once was an Eastern Catholic and was still very active here before she became Orthodox, so I'm wondering if I might post here in the capacity she did? Frankly I am still very drawn to Orthodox spirituality and liturgy, and if there were an Eastern Catholic parish nearby, I'd probably split my time between the Divine Liturgy and the Traditional Latin Mass. (This may give a clue as to a small reason why I went back to Catholicism, actually.)

Anyway. Please do let me know how I ought to proceed. I do not feel at home in OBOB at all. I feel at home here.

EDIT: I know I've already been participating, but I realized I should have asked first... forgive me.
I remember you!

You know how we be: as long as you're not spouting anti-Orthodox hooey, trying to bring us to Rome, or advocating outright violence and/or heresy; we welcome pretty much everybody.

Welcome back to TAW!

Welcome back to TAW!

You mean you don't want lectures on purgatory, the Immaculate Conception, and why Rome is supreme? IS OUTRAGE! ;)

Eastern Catholicism for me was a sad desert. It was a bleak and weird type of tofu with no taste. It sought to be something that cannot and should not exist---both Roman and Eastern in one package. It was bizarre. My observation was that, as these Eastern Catholic folks, I won't use the 'u-word' just in case Anhelyna might still slap me (^_^^_^^_^) for uttering it, tried to have their cake and eat it, too, they never seemed to end up understanding either faith

Probably the most direct, accurate, and succinct statement I have ever read about Uniates (and Anhelyna can slap me if she wants to!) They have no idea who they are. I say this as one (and an unhappy one right now). While I get the sense that some of them have managed to compartmentalize things in a manner that keeps them sane, and some of them are quite dedicated to the faith they have chosen, the majority seem to just do Liturgy and go home. They don't realize they are supposed to be Orthodox in their theology and praxis with the side issue of being in communion with Rome.

Seeing someone pray the Rosary in what is suppossed to be an Orthodox parish is ......wierd. Didn't Pope Francis recently say that the Uniate Church is no longer a valid theological option ... or something to that effect.

EDIT

I wrote a long response, but forget it. I asked if I was welcome. A few of the old TAW people responded affirmatively. I appreciate it. But now this has turned into a thread bashing and judging my Eastern Catholic brethren. For goodness' sake, I ask if I'm welcome, and now I see the word "uniate" getting tossed around. I guess I have my answer. If any mods are watching, close this thread. I won't be back.

A few things.

1) Why someone who claims to be Catholic is using the word "uniate" is beyond me.
2) It sounds like you are casting judgment on a lot of people with little basis in reality, because my experience has been nothing like you describe. One of my best friends is a Byzantine Catholic who occasionally can be found in Latin parishes. Oh, and he wears the Brown Scapular and prays the Rosary. I didn't realize Catholics weren't supposed to do those things.
3) You have it backwards. Byzantine Catholics and other Easterners have perfectly valid Catholic theology that is very close to what the Orthodox believe. Eastern Catholics are not Orthodox, and the kind folks here in TAW will be the first to tell you that.
4) Eastern Catholicism exists because of Rome. It's not a side issue. If an Eastern Catholic did not want to be in communion with Rome, they'd join either the Eastern or Oriental Orthodox. Yet, there they are in a Catholic parish. That means the primacy of the Roman bishop is important to them.

I just wanted to know if I was welcome here. I'm starting to get the impression that maybe I'm not since this turned into a thread bashing my Eastern Catholic brethren. Discussion is one thing, but I have a fellow Catholic questioning the faith of Catholics. I'm flabbergasted and offended.

EDIT: I just noticed you're an inquirer into Orthodoxy. You're not even Orthodox yet and you're using the word "uniate." Maybe get CF to change your faith to "Christian" or something if your'e going to go around bashing Holy Mother Church.

actually, Light of the East was (and technically still is, I believe) a Uniate who is inquiring into Orthodoxy. he is not coming from a point of ignorance.

If you want the mods to close your thread, all you have to do is report your opening post and leave a message asking them to close your thread. Honestly, you are welcome here, but don't expect to hear anything less than Orthodox theology. Anhelyna posted here for years as an Eastern Catholic and she never had an issue with discussions about Eastern Catholicism.

Actually it has to be admitted I learnt a LOT while I was posting here as an EC [ I personally abhor the use of the U word as I had heard it said to me so often in a very nasty sneering , very deliberately pejorative fashion ]

We can quite easily discuss and learn from each other without being nasty
