Why don't we celebrate this holiday?

Note that the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Reconciliation. It will be a holy occasion for you. You must deny yourselves and offer a food gift to the Lord. 28 You must not do any work that day because it is a Day of Reconciliation to make reconciliation for you before the Lord your God. 29 Anyone who does not deny themselves on that day will be cut off from their people. 30 Moreover, I will destroy from their people anyone who does any work on that day. 31 You must not do any work! This is a permanent rule throughout your future generations wherever you live. Leviticus 23:27

This sounds pretty important and unchanging...so WHAT ARE WE DOING? Adopting a Pagan Christmas that Jesus wasn't born on and forgetting this one? That ought to go over real good. We say it is for Jesus' birthday, then why don't we pronounce it correctly? Why the tree? Why not just a nativity scene? How about a birthday cake for Jesus? I think we are doing it wrong...

Nobody is stopping you from celebrating Yom Kippur, but you missed it by almost 2 months. But I guess that gives you 10 months and 1 week to find a good Messianic congregation for the next time around.

What in the world would this have to do with Christmas? The two are completely unconnected and two months apart?

I am saying why would we celebrate Christmas which is NOT in the Bible but is manmade and not celebrate THIS holiday which is in the Bible and proclaimed by God?

See to it that nobody enslaves you with philosophy and foolish deception, which conform to human traditions and the way the world thinks and acts rather than Christ

That's what it is? Yom Kippur? I am surprised that Christians do not celebrate it. I am a Christian so I would not go to a Messianic congregation but I think I should celebrate the same holidays that my Lord would. Does that make sense?

the Day of Reconciliation.
Every day we do well to celebrate the reconciliation which Jesus gained for us, on the cross.

Ones could merely celebrate a day, but not live the reconciliation!!

"God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself" (in 2 Corinthians 5:19)

I understand this means God in Jesus on Calvary was reconciling us to Himself. And this we can celebrate each day, by having love and forgiveness ready for any person . . . even if they refuse this. Still always be ready for love :) And be God's example of this, so our example can help others to get reconciled with God and get into loving any and all people like Jesus was doing, on Calvary's cross.

"And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

This needs to be in us, example in the sight of God . . . not only in the sight of people keeping track of a calendar :)

This was for Jews so probably not for you, and even if you were one it has been done for when Christ died.

Funny thing is I don't see you complaining about not letting land rest from growing fruits every 7 years globally...

Jews never kept these commandments , they went to Babylon for not keeping them year after year...

Do you celebrate all of those? As Christians why don't we? You would think Christians would keep the Jewish holidays if we believe the Old Testament like we say we do. Christians are just Gentile Jews who believe in Jesus, no? By not celebrating what Jesus would have, which is the law of God, that makes our religion more of a manmade cult doesn't it? I mean Jesus Christ was not a Christian..

First, Yom Kippur is not the day of reconciliation, it's the Day of Atonement. Jews celebrated this day in a foreshadowing of Christs one and for all atonement for our sins.

The early Christians didn't celebrate this, because there is no more need of sacrifice for sin... Christ is our atonement. We celebrate that daily.

Christ lived as a Jew. Why are you focusing on holidays and ignoring the rest? Cherry picking the facets of Judaism you want to emulate isn’t mimicking Christ. He did it all.

Christianity and Judaism aren’t one in the same. If you visit a synagogue you’ll realize the difference. :)

As for your OP, I don’t celebrate Christian holidays. I came to faith in a Jewish setting.

Oh ok. Well the Bible doesn't say Yom Kippur-and why would God tell us to celebrate it forever if we don't need to? He knew He was coming!

I am not cherry picking anything. I am asking why do Christians celebrate a Pagan Christmas and ignore what God told us to celebrate. That is the topic. Preachers and people do Bible study one verse at a time right? I am just trying to figure out Gods holidays and mans holidays and differentiate. Is that bad? Are you a Christian?

And what do you mean He lived as a Jew? Jesus was of the Jewish faith and of Jewish descent. Jesus was a Jew!

We don't celebrate like the old testament Jews as we are 1.) Not under the law, but rather under the law of the Spirit.

If you read Acts of the Apostles 27, the Day of Atonement is mentioned, but it's mentioned more as to mention a time of year, a mere calender reference, and wasn't observed by the Apostle Paul or those with him.

The end of the age or epoch, or the end of "times", occurred with the advent of the Messiah 2,000 years ago now. We then entered a new epoch, the time of the Kingdom of God; under the new covenant our responsibilities are different, because the Messiah came, and we have the Holy Spirit in us and with us.

We have seen what the people of old only dreamed of seeing... so our celebrations are different. We celebrate the Lords Supper, Baptism, and we appreciate all that God has done for us every day, including the atonement.

Whether it’s good or bad isn’t for me to decide. That’s your call. :)

Only Christian members can post in this forum.

I’m aware of His ethnicity. The comment addressed His adherence to Jewish customs. You’re focusing on holidays when there’s more to unpack if you desire to do so.

Christians have their own traditions and beliefs which differ from the things Christ did. For some that’s fine. Others desire a different course. I hope you find the one which suits you best.

Yours in His Service,

~bella

No... not really.

My husband has never believed in putting up a tree or any of that - won't have one in his home (and as a Christian I agree) - but his mom and sisters do, and they celebrate it with a dinner and a gift exchange so we do the family dinner and gift exchange with them.

I feel it would be rude when their giving gifts to us not to give them something in return, so I normally do baskets of various homemade food items for them, always with some sort of theme (bread theme one year, chocolate another etc etc)

That's just me not being rude though. My husband and I don't celebrate for us though (no tree, no lights, no gifts etc etc)

The only "holiday" (if we can call it such) we are commanded to observe in any capacity is the death of our Lord and Savior.

I think I got your point, but maybe we can celebrate it every day regardless of the date through prayers. And yes maybe December 25 is not written in the bible as the birth date of Jesus, but in my own opinion, I think that's okay at least we are celebrating his date of birth every year. :)

You are correct- we should celebrate it every day but the main problem I have with it is that we know that anything that is not of God is of what? And Christmas has been overshadowed by Santa, and Elves, and reindeer, and gingerbread, and gifts and snowmen and candy and stockings and the tree and the lights...and while it all seems innocent enough, it is not of God and we know the difference. Our God tells us 13 times how jealous He is and how He is a consuming fire. So I think since we know December 25th is not His birthday, we should just let them give " Caesar" what is Caesers, and give God what is Gods but not make the Lord's day of holy birth compete with anything, ESPECIALLY something that is not holy but is overshadowing. That is just my personal opinion, but everyone can do what they want. Also only 2 people celebrating their birthdays are mentioned in the Bible and they are both self-righteous kings. Unholy men. My favorite day is Ascension Day which is 40 days from Passover.:papapa:
