1 John 5:20. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us comprehension, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true,
in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

To be given comprehension; Greek dianoia: “a way to understand” means that The Logos, the Son of God is the lens through which we view life and rightly comprehend His intent. He has “given us insight”, a clear heart vision to reflect our minds upon and know “the true God and eternal life”. To have inspired comprehension. (This is the Daystar.)

In many translations, dianoia is often rendered "understanding" and other times as "mind". Comprehension is the best English word to capture its meaning.

This is what is meant when we are instructed:
Mark 12:30. Love the Lord with all of your comprehension.
Hebrews 8:10. I will put my laws in their comprehension.

To love the Lord with all your comprehension requires sanctification from all worldly influences.
Paul refers to “the eye of your comprehension being enlightened”, and then refers to those who are alienated from the life of God as having their way of comprehension darkened resulting in “blindness of their hearts”.
Ephesians 1:18, Ephesians 4:18.

Jesus said:
Matthew 6:23. If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

This is the Gospel at work through The Holy Spirit.
Acts 26:18. To open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan unto God that they may receive remission of sin and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in Me.

2 Timothy 1:7. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Peter also makes reference to this Truth:
2 Peter 3:1. Stir up your comprehension by way of remembrance:
He is speaking of a sound mind when he wrote:
1 Peter 1:13. Wherefore gird up the loins of your comprehension, be sober, and
hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The expression ‘gird up the loins of your comprehension’ is a powerful image of a sound mind. Loins refers to the hips, our strongest weight-bearing joints, and critical for keeping our balance. God’s ‘ball and socket’ design is used extensively in modern engineering design. Therefore, a sober, pure and sincere mind keeps us walking in ‘the light of Truth’.

As Paul prays:
1 Thessalonians 5:23.
May the very God of peace sanctify you wholly and your whole
spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,
10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and
without offense till the day of Christ,
11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory
and praise of God.

I agree with this topic. I do not know just where this fits in with it, but I believe it does.

John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." NKJV

I take this to mean that the more we prove our love for Jesus the more He shows himself to us. The end of which one might say as Paul did:

2 Cor 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago — whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows — such a one was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know such a man — whether in the body or out of the body I do not know,NKJV

Thank you.

So how do get this progressive inspired comprehension? As Jesus said in John 14:21 by keeping Jesus' commandments. Jesus is the word and if He manifests Himself to us it means He opens the word to us. The more of the word we understand our love and faith grow. We need to obey His commandments.

In 1 john 3: 23 John says God's commandment is to believe on the name of His son Jesus Christ and to love one another. Loving one another is one of the main themes of John's writings. This is because if we do anything to our brethren we are doing it to Jesus. Showing love for our fellow Christians is the best way to follow Jesus and show our love for Him. We need to make it a habit to help our brethren.

As it says in James 2: 14-17 we have to do something, if we have the means, when we see our brothers in need. This cannot be a one time thing. It must become a habit to help our brethren. In addition to pleasing God, showing our love for Jesus and our brothers - it is a great testimony to the world of just what loving Jesus is all about. If you read the history of the Church the thing that impressed the Romans was the love Christians showed for each other.

The time is near. Let's start blessing Jesus by blessing our brethren. Not only will we get more of Jesus our faith will increase.

One of my favorite passages/verses in the N.T.

1 John 5:20

20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true — even in his Son Jesus Christ. He(Jesus) is the true God and eternal life.

On behalf of seeing χριστος as the antecedent are the following arguments: (1) Although it is true that αληθινος θεος is not elsewhere referred to Christ, αληθεια is, and is so in Johannine literature (John 14:6).

29 Winer-Moulton, 195.
Further, αληθινος θεος is not a "constant.. epithet" as Winer supposes, being found only in John 17:3 and 1 John 5:20! (2) Christ is also said to be ζωη in John's writings John 11:25; 14:6; 1 John 1:1-2), an epithet nowhere else used of the Father. (3) The demonstrative pronoun, ουτος, in the Gospel and Epistles of John seems to be used in a theologically rich manner.30 Specifically, of the approximately seventy instances in which ουτος has a personal referent, as many as forty- four of them (almost two-thirds of the instances) refer to the Son. Of the remainder, most imply some sort of positive connection with the Son.31 What is most significant is that never is the Father the referent. For what it is worth, this datum increases the probability that ιησου χριστω is the antecedent in 1 John 5:20. 32 The issue cannot be decided on grammar alone. But suffice it to say here that there are no grammatical reasons for denying that αληθινος θεος is descriptive of Jesus Christ.

Below are the 8 reasons why The Son is the True God and Eternal Life

1st- Jesus is called God in the writings of John(1:1,20:28,1 John 5:20)

2nd- Jesus is called Eternal Life over and over again in Johns writings

3rd- John opens up his epistle with the Eternal life(Jesus) that was with the Father in the beginning and was manifest to the disciples(1 John 1:1-5)

4th- John ends his epistle with Jesus who is eternal life and only is eternal life found in Him who is the true God.

5th- never is eternal life used of the Father alone. When the Father is included the Son is always mentioned together with the Father making them equal. Equality with the Father was not something Jesus needed to grasp at as He already possessed complete Deity as God.(Phil 2, Col 2:9)

6th- John would not leave his readers with any ambiguity warning them to guard themselves from idols(5:21) So this would be clear his reference was to those who reject Jesus as the true God. They are the idoloters and antichrists John writes of in his epistles.

7th- Jesus is also the True God and the True one in 1 John. Jesus is the true light which brings light to all men (John 1:9) Jesus is the truth (John 14:6)Jesus is the true vine (John 15:1). Jesus is the true witness of God (John 18:37) He who is true (Revelation 3:7) Jesus is the faithful and true witness (Revelation 3:14)Jesus is Lord God Almighty, Just and true are your ways(Revelation 15:3) Jesus is faithful and true(Revelation 19:11).

8th- [In John's writings] Of the approximately 70 instances in which ουτος has a personal referent, as many as 44 of them (almost 2/3 . . . ) refer to the Son. Of the remainder, most imply some sort of positive connection with the Son.31 What is most significant is that NEVER is the Father the referent.FWIW, this datum increases the probability that ιησου χριστω IS the antecedent in 1 John 5:20. Wallace.

So the most logical conclusion is that it refers to Jesus as the true God. Not only is this Dr Wallace's conclusion from Johns usage of outos but He is the closest antecedent (most times in the NT this principal holds true). Eternal Life is never used of the Father alone in John’s writings and only a couple of times does John include the Father with the Son regarding eternal life. John opens up his epistles describing the "eternal life" who was with the Father in the beginning and then ends his epistle with eternal life identifying Jesus as the true God and eternal life. John then says this in the last verse:

1 John 5:21-Guard yourselves from idols

Now why would he leave any ambiguity in verse 20 as to the identity of the true God and eternal life then turn around commanding them to protect themselves from idolatry? It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever unless John is identifying Jesus as the true God and refuting the Gnostics of his day who denied the Incarnation.

hope this helps !!!

On behalf of seeing χριστος as the antecedent are the following arguments: (1) Although it is true that αληθινος θεος is not elsewhere referred to Christ, αληθεια is, and is so in Johannine literature (John 14:6).
The God who sees is the God who gives us sight.
Genesis 16:13. Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees;
for she said, Have I also here seen Him who sees me?
Jesus taught it.
Matthew 5:8. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Jesus lived it.
John 5:19. Then Jesus answered and said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can
do nothing of Himself, but
what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also
does in like manner.
Here is a fun way to see ourselves in the disciples as they try to live what He taught.
John 21:
4
But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples
did not know that it was Jesus.
5
Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.”
6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.
So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter
heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into
the sea.

When you think of the times we wrestle with decisions to find the Lord's Will in our circumstances,
we have to come to the point in Faith when we say “It is the Lord!”
We put on our "outer garment" of His Anointing, His Strength, and take the plunge! LOL
