They waited much too long. And so a lot of extra people will die in their states.

Those extra deaths could easily have been prevented by merely listening to most any quality public health official and acting in a more responsive manner to value lives.

Wearing a mask, or avoiding drunk driving...these are just ordinary types of rules that people should not harm others.

"For months, Republican governors resisted calls for mask mandates. But as they have watched hospitals in their states stretched to the breaking point in recent weeks — driving home the reality of the dangers posed by a virus allowed to spread unchecked — that is starting to change.

In Utah last week, Gary Herbert, the Republican governor, issued a mask mandate “until further notice” as hospitals across the state were nearing or at full capacity.

Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota ordered residents of the state on Friday to wear masks indoors and outdoors if they could not socially distance. North Dakota has the country’s highest rates of new daily cases and deaths per person, according to a New York Times database.

In West Virginia, Gov. Jim Justice ordered on Saturday that residents must wear masks in indoor public settings.

Then on Monday evening, Kim Reynolds, the governor of Iowa, struck a somber tone as she announced that, starting Tuesday, Iowans would need to wear masks while indoors if they are unable to maintain social distance.

“There aren’t enough sheriffs in Iowa’s 99 counties to shut down every noncompliant bar,” she said. “If Iowans don’t buy into this, we lose,” she said, warning that schools and businesses could be closed.

Ms. Reynolds had flouted infectious disease experts who say masks are one of the most effective tools to control the spread of the virus. In September, she issued guidance that told students, teachers and workers that they did not have to quarantine after being in close contact with someone who was infected as long as both were wearing masks.

The rates of new daily cases and hospitalizations have roughly doubled in Iowa over the past two weeks...."

As someone that has often voted for various Republicans (I vote both parties, depending on the individual candidate and just voted in this last election for numerous candidates from both parties), I'd not vote for a 2nd time for a governor so incompetent to wait so long.

Now that Trump's denialism has been rebuked by the American people, they just see the handwriting on the wall and realize there's nothing to be gained through continuing the deadly charade.
If you compare the cases and the deaths the mortality rate is low.

Mandates only work if enforced and if you have enough people not willing to do it I am pretty sure the law got better things to do than be on literal mask patrol.

Go tell that to anybody who has lost family to COVID-19 and see if it helps any.

I did not say it would, but if people want to talk about hard science we can talk about hard numbers and those numbers suggest a low ( and declining) mortality rate.

A substantial number of COVID patients have lingering symptoms. Some symptoms may never resolve. People have needed lung transplants because of COVID-19, even otherwise young and healthy people.

So please, spare us the unethical COVID-19 apologetics.

Compared to what?
compared to the people actually getting it. Less than 5% of people who get it end up dying. The odds of death for any particular person therefore is low.

Relative to what exactly?

And the spiraling case load is overwhelming hospitals which means further denial of health services resulting in further deaths.

You do understand that relative to a population of ~300+ million, that even a "low" mortality rate still represents millions of deaths, yes?

I eagerly await the tweets from the White House demanding the people of these Republican states "rise up" and "liberate" themselves from their Republican oppressors.

a one percent mortality rate for example would be between three and four million.

I am wondering how willing some people will be to follow it. Like I said above the law has better things to do than mask patrol.

Yes. Which is a lot of people to be dying in a relatively short period of time (especially if the viral infections continue to climb exponentially). For point of comparison, the typical number of deaths in a year is <3 million in the U.S.

Plus, the aforementioned strain on health services resulting in that many more deaths.

Is that just not a big deal in your eyes?

I remember Mike Pence saying no need for mandates because, "We trust the American people will do the right thing."
That might have worked even if the president had set a great example of encouraging mask wearing. But he instead set an example (several) that masks were not so important, and could just be worn occasionally for a token effort.
