Psalms 12 - NASB

{0} For the choir director; upon an eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm of David.
{1} Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases to be, For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.

  • How few (and Jesus confirmed it, Matthew 7:14) it seems are those faithful around us. Psalms 37:7 might be a comfort to ponder. Job indeed had to wrestle with the prospering of the wicked in light of his (a 'righteous' one) suffering.

{2} They speak falsehood to one another; With flattering lips and with a double heart they speak.
{3} May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, The tongue that speaks great things;
{4} Who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; who is lord over us?”

  • The wicked use their voice: They speak...lips...The tongue
  • For falsehood...flattering...and with a double heart
  • In their pride they boast of great things of which one more humble might sound more like Psalms 131:1
  • It is their (Our lips are our own) weapon by which they will prevail over others in
  • They have a big sense of their own security and power: "who is lord over us?"

{5} “Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy, Now I will arise,” says the LORD; “I will set him in the safety for which he longs.”

  • But God will arise
  • Now: at the right time. I believe this to be a reference to the coming of the Lord.
  • And all the needy, pushed down by the power of those speaking falsehood, those having deceptive tongues, like that of Satan himself, God will set him in the safety for which he longs. There will be a time for your rescue (Now).

{6} The words of the LORD are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.

  • God doesn't lie, nor did he regarding the initial coming of his son, to offer the cleansing of sins. He is patient in waiting for wicked men to turn to him in this day of salvation, but it will not always be this way.

{7} You, O LORD, will keep them; You will preserve him from this generation forever.
{8} The wicked strut about on every side When vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

  • When the sons of men choose to honour wickedness and show disdain towards righteousness (calling good evil and evil good), then certainly the wicked will strut about on every side and you will seem surrounded
  • This isn't heaven, and in your distaste of the acts of this generation, you can be assured that you won't have to taste it forever, in being chosen out of it and preserved long after it, in safety beyond it's fall, if you reside in Jesus
  • To all the needy, Proverbs 11:28 says, "He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like the green leaf."
  • God will have his day, and "I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning...Indeed I have spoken it. I will also bring it to pass. Listen to Me...My Salvation shall not linger" (Isaiah 46:9-13 = Ultimate fulfillment is when Israel is saved from the 'final form' of Babylon (cf. Revelation 19) = when Jesus returns).
