Bear with me for just a moment and opinion.

I lived through Jimmy Carter. Gas rationing, mortgage rates above 12%, car loan rates 12 - 15% on an average, rising unemployment etc.

It wasn't all that different. Jimmy was a caring compassionate man who was supposed to heal the nation.

In reality his left leaning policies almost bankrupted the country and it woke the voting public up. It is one of the reasons why we had Republican Presidents from 1981 to 1993.

It just feel and sounds very familiar.

I did not live through that (1991 model here) but that makes sense and sounds like what the current democrats are like.

My comments were intended to be directed at the OP, but they apply to your post, too. Basically, the fears of a Biden-caused economic collapse are absurd and don’t jive with any sort of reasonable economic forecast or history. Republicans have caused and/or overseen far worse economic calamities n recent years than Democrats, most recently with Trump accelerating the deficit growth and botching the response to the pandemic. Moody’s projected Biden and Dem plans as resulting in more growth than Trump’s.

I'll give you a real life example.

Mortgage:

1970s
Thanks to Freddie Mac, there’s solid data available for 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates beginning in 1971.

Rates in 1971 were in the mid-7% range, and they moved up steadily until they were at 9.19% in 1974. They briefly dipped down into the mid- to high-8% range before climbing to 11.20% in 1979. This was during a period of high inflation that hit its peak early in the next decade.

Why was Carter elected? The public hated Nixon - They were upset and wanted a change.

Sound familiar?

I was thinking something similar if Biden gets in. I think he is going to have trouble dealing with the radical left of his party. They will be wanting concessions from him, and even rioting aka "mostly peaceful protesting" (with looting, arson etc.). That has the potential to be a "Hostage Crisis" (the biggest thing that got Carter from my memory of being a kid watching the news of 1979-1980). The big difference though is most of the media will try to cover for Biden on this, rather than trying to be neutral like the old days.

Other things happened during those years, as well.

One of the most significant was the formation of the Arab oil cartel OPEC, ... and the subsequent oil embargo, leading to a corresponding sharp rise in energy costs ...

Maybe so, but Mr Carter had problems to deal with not of his making. In 1956, America threw the UK and France under the proverbial bus during the Suez crisis. The end result was the Middle East, especially Egypt, being emboldened to create the oil crisis. America's folly led to the 1967 and 1973 wars against Israel.

The cost of oil skyrocketed, as you will remember. Since oil is central to the production and distribution of almost everything, inflation was catastrophic. That was beyond Mr Carter's control. America's credibility was shaken to the core by the the Iran revolution and the failed rescue attempt on the US embassy. In hindsight, the administration should have contracted the Israelis to perform the rescue, perhaps along with UK special forces.

Mr Carter paid for his mistakes by having just one term. I think that he was just too decent and well meaning to make a good president in difficult times. Good intentions don't always translate to good policy.

Don't you mean a new 'Great Society' for all which will have the same effect on the population as the first one where as desire to prosper is replaced by one of misguided allegiance and dependence? That has nothing to do with the social nets of universal health care and pensions other countries enjoy. They aren't told they aren't a certain type of people if they don't vote for their saviours.

It's the economic cycle that determines unemployment:

Note the increases in unemployment under Bush 2, Reagan and Nixon

This is ridiculous. The hostage crisis was an American crisis of Iranian making ...

Just because Carter and Biden are nice guys doesn't mean their presidencies are heading along parallel paths. Obama was a nice guy and he led us to record breaking economies.
