As an outsider to the US (forgive me), I only really glance at cnn. In the last couple months, to counter balance, I've been glancing now at foxnews hoping to get a counter balance.

I feel like both of these are making me MORE stupid.

The only news source in the US that I would feel comfortable saying there is SOMETHING CLOSE to impartiality is NPR. Besides, I love public radio (I'm talking nonprint media here).

What are your thoughts on NPR? Are there right wingers AND left wingers who like it?

What do you recommend? ESPECIALY for any future elections? What were you watching on election day?

I'd recommend to watch some international news sources online to balance out your view.

To complete your view, research the points where they contradict each other.

I tried that with foxnews and cnn. Turns out I wasted twice as much time.

And I'd rather not have to feel like I HAVE TO get good information about the US from outside hte us.

There HAS to be something decent.

Good journalism is hard to find. I read AP reports on Yahoo News. There are a handful of reporters who give only facts but they're hard to come by. It's mostly opinion. I find myself having to ignore adjectives and adverbs.

I watch PBS for things I want a boring, middle of the road presentation of. Some people have some gripes with public broadcasting and say it betrays a certain liberal bias, and it probably does on the local stations, depending on where they're based. But I just watch whatever's streaming, which is usually the national syndicated broadcast of stuff like the News Hour, which is okay enough for me.

I prefer full-length journal or magazine articles or long-form documentaries to news, anyway. Most important things deserve more than 2-5 minute bites of information, and often times I find that I didn't understand what was actually important until consulting these more in-depth sources.

AP and Reuters both have web sites. They're pretty neutral. So in the NY Times, though most CF readers will never admit it.
The new york times is not neutral; although many will not admit to it.

NPR is good but they don't cover everything. CNN is pretty good, I think CNBC is maybe more fair. I like Bloomberg the best, actually, I think they're the fairest but they are often not very thorough on politics because they focus on economics/finance,

You posted just a little bit ago in this thread that Fox News is now sympathizing with liberals. I do not mean to insult you or presume to know things about your thinking that I do not, as I'm not sure what that's based on, but I think it shows that your evaluation of news sources is at least a bit outside of what most people, liberal or conservative, would consider dispassionate.

I'm a liberal, but even I think CNN is biased. As far as I know, they are factually correct, but too much of their news has been anti-Trump editorial content disguised as news. Again, what they say is accurate, but I'd rather separate news and editorials. I'd also like to see coverage of a wider range of topics. I don't think they do the kind of serious journalism that NYT, BBC and NPR do.

NYTimes is one of the few places doing in-depth journalism, much of it around the world. Unfortunately if you use it very much it's pay. (Their problem is that there's not enough print subscriptions that they can afford to leave the web site free. Most of their revenue is now from online subscriptions.) BBC and NPR also do that, and are reasonable candidates. BBC and NPR both have government funding. Without that it's hard to do serious reporting without subscriptions.

Wall Street Journal probably is also doing some real journalism, but it's a Murdoch property. It's not as badly affected as Fox, but it definitely is.

Politico is sometimes interesting as well.

I second this.

AP and Reuters are deliberately tone neutral.

Caveat is that they both perform quite thorough fact checking (although this is performed within significant time constraints) so could be perceived as biased/hostile by groups peddling/favouring misinformation.

[Disclaimer: I have done freelance sub-editing and ad hoc fact checking work for Reuters, although not for more than 10 years.]

Bloomberg too is an excellent news source, although not as tone neutral as AP/Reuters. The same goes for the news section of the Wall Street Journal. Although the less said about the opinion segment of the WSJ, the better.

Otherwise, BBC World Service and Al Jazeera are both reliable and generally neutral, although both have a couple of obvious and acknowledged biases.

I don't give a darn what most others say about them.

Having read tens of thousands of news articles from over 50 sources for decades, I'd be someone very able to answer this accurately.

Among several top news sources, NPR is fairly good at being neutral. One of the best at neutrality and also giving excellent detail.

This chart is pretty good at identifying the best news sources, as I know from reading tens of thousands of articles over decades from many of these various sources in this chart.

USA Today makes a concerted effort to be old school in how they present news. Not perfect of course, but their intent is to provide neutral news stories and opinion pieces that are balanced across both sides of issues. They show on the chart already posted as high reliability and neutral.

I tend to read 3 websites everyday. Fox News, CNN and USA Today. I figure that helps me cover the different not whacko political viewpoints pretty well.
