Well, what percentage is considered to be acceptable to you? And does it matter that bishops and even the Vatican have covered for guilty priests? There is a lot more for the church to be ashamed of than can be avoided by pointing fingers elsewhere.
The percentage has to do with facts, not emotional accusations.
But let me help, according to Dr Philip Jenkins, a professor at Pennsylvania U, not a Catholic who did the studies over the past 25 years;
Out of the population of priest, 4% have been charged with sexual abuse. Most of those are with homosexual priest with teenage boys or homosexual adults
Priest molesting children, prepubescent children, is less than 1%.
For the most part, the Bishops and Vatican handled sex abuse accusations the same way that other institutions handled them. The accused had to agree to prosecute the priest and testify in court. The majority refused to do so and the parents of minors refused to go that route as well. Sexual abuse 20 - 40 years ago carried a negative stigma that the victim would suffer from if it were made public, so they kept silent.
This was true for secular schools and other religions as well
The Episcopal Church in Toronto Canada, filed for bankruptcy over 15 years ago because of the payouts for sex abuse cases committed by priest. Remember, their priests are allowed to be married.
Also, 20/20 ran a sting operation to catch pedophiles. Two who were caught were Rabi's.
The Catholic Church was highlighted by the media, who hates the Catholic Church and Christianity itself.
