I don't hear an audible voice when I "hear" from God. It's more an internal thing, like reading something, or remembering something. When you read a book, you don't audibly hear the characters' voices, but your mind "hears" them in one fashion or another. Likewise, when you remember something someone said, you aren't audibly hearing their voice again, it's just your brain recalling it inwardly. It's more like that for me :)

Still, small, and quiet. Then other times when He speaks to me it sounds like my voice.
Then sometimes His voice sounds like the sound of others when they give instruction or other helpful counsel. I've yet to hear the voice of God sounding like booming thunder. But I'm still waiting for that.

Always, however, does the sound of God's voice resonate with scripture. (The words of Jesus and His writers)

inwardly like a whisper ..... outwardly of which won't be until His return .... then it will be loud ... like thunder.

Revelation 14:1-5
Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder.

don't know about you .... but I've heard thunder unbelievably loud at times ;o)

For me, it has always the still small voice of calm that reminds me that I am loved perfectly and unconditionally.
The tender, welcoming voice when I turn to the Lord when I have erred or strayed. Always patient, never begrudging, never condemning. Always merciful, graceful and loving.
The gentle reprimanding voice when I get things wrong, reminding me that He corrects because He loves and cares.
When I am sad or depressed, the comforting voice that soothes my sorrow and reminds me that He is holding me close.
If you want to know the Lord more deeply, tell Him you love Him. There is nothing that touches the heart of the Father more than your simple expression of love. Come to him in simple childlike faith and trust and His love will enfold you.

Sometimes, yeah :) There's not an audible voice, it's not like someone is literally in the room with me. It's more like an impression. It's a bit hard to describe if you haven't experienced it, I guess! Like, you'll just know something that you didn't know two seconds before. It hits you deeply within your spirit, your soul. It's pretty amazing.

How do you discern between it and your thoughts.

It's more powerful. It has a completely different feeling to it. It's not like my mind wandering or daydreaming or talking to itself. It's like an illumination of truth that cannot be doubted or questioned. I can tell that it's coming from outside of myself, rather than from within. I wish I could describe it better!

Inward whisper as in like a thought maybe?

My take on this is ....

We have a somewhat mysterious connection between our heart and our thoughts. I know within myself ... usually I feel things in my heart first. It seems to me ... our heart initiates the emotional feeling and then our mind requires a response to that feeling .... and .... then the thought(s) ends up translating into a action. Can be instantaneously .... or can take some time. Also, it can be ignored. If ignored .... the whisper continues. This is the conviction of the Holy Spirit leading us to repentance.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Matthew 22:37
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Some say the heart and mind are the same thing .... I believe they are indeed separate ..... but ... function together very closely.

As we are being sanctified by the Holy Spirit .... our thinking gets changed .... so yes ultimately ends up being our thoughts ... but the change starts in the heart.

The voice of God sounds like our own thoughts. It is my opinion, that all voices in the spiritual realm sound the same. This is because in order to be understood they need to use a mechanism that we can decipher. Our thoughts are one such mechanism. The problem however is that not only God uses this method, demons also can speak into our minds. This becomes problematic because we can be hearing from either source. God can, and does use our mind to talk to us. But so too do demons.

The following are my opinion on the matter:

Listening to a voice is not recommended. For we can not command God to speak. Although, we can request that He do so, and weigh up what we are hearing over time.

God will speak when He wants to, through a vision, or a thought, but we should not really be trying to make Him speak.

Never rely upon a vision or thought, for it may not have been God. Weigh things up over time.

The time when God speaks the most is when we are witnessing to others, He will drop scriptures or thoughts into our mind. But even then we still need to be careful not to follow just any random thought that pops into our mind. Especially if it seems outside our ability to do.

It is not a sign of maturity to hear from God. I know many churches seem to exult the practice, but for the average believer, it is a really messy ground. I would not say avoid the practice, just be careful in how you navigate it. Don't believe every voice, vision, and thought.
