Wouldn't you agree that those tax breaks helped your local small business? It's the little guys who ended up paying the highest rate not the millionaires. Small business is taxed to death. 35 percent self employment, 2 percent of gross to every city and county you work in. Contractor fees, license fees, mandatory schooling, employee health care and retirement. The list goes on and on. The higher all those costs go the less companies can put in the pay checks. It's no wonder we as a nation buy everything from low wage countries, we can't afford American costs. If I remember correctly my cost was 60 plus hr before I made a dime.
Those tax breaks didn’t do squat for me.

Every developed nation must have taxes, most of the ones with the highest standard of living have higher taxes than the US.

I don't mind higher taxes if it can be passed on to the consumer. It's when you are priced out of the market it becomes a problem. People shift their purchases to a country with very low costs. You can't tax American business without some kind of import protection.

Countries like the Netherlands or Denmark have high taxes, but they actually make things that the rest of the world will buy, and pay top dollar for.

Low-cost mass market products are headed for the global south and probably will never come back. If they do come back, they will be made by robots.

Ending tax shelters and loopholes would go a long ways towards making our tax system fairer. But that involves tackling the role of dark money in our politics.

While I agree those huge companies need to pay the government can only act equally to all businesses. If they give a tax break to the small corporations they have to give it to all. The little guys really needed the break.

The paradigm that Americans have about life is going to be upended in the next century. Newer technologies and ways of delivering goods and services will be extremely disruptive. It's hard to say just what the future will bring, but it's unlikely that style of petit bourgeois anarcho-capitalism of the past, with small businesses with large staff and brick-and-mortar presence, at the center of American self-identity, can survive in the future. We are headed towards a gig economy for many people who work in small businesses now.

Revelations gives us a pretty good view of the future. It's going to get tough.

THere is no worse basis for public policy than eschatology.

Which is actually an argument for a government health plan -- as our current system ends up an extra "tax" on business to pay for (most of) their employees' health care.
