Hello.
I would assume that members here are familiar with the meaning of mental assent vs. belief.

In case some don't, here's one definition that came up in Google searching...

Mental assent means intellectually accepting the Word of God as true – admiring it and agreeing with it-but not allowing it to have an impact on you, so that it doesn’t do any good in your life. In essence, mental assent agrees with God but does not believe in God.
So, if one were to examine themselves appropriately and found that they were not a true believer, but rather was operating from this 'mental assent', how would this person go about acquiring saving faith?

Attempting to quantify and qualify faith is a dangerous path toward either total despair or pride; in either case the danger of shipwrecking one's faith is there.

Instead, trust in Jesus. And what happens when you don't know if you have trust? Then pray, "Lord I believe, help my unbelief!"

What, do we think God is powerless to save sinners? Christ died for you, He rose from the dead, believe the good news.

Having good theology is important but it is useless if one doesn’t believe that Jesus is the Christ, He rose from the dead and wants to have an intimate relationship with one.

Great question! Love the topic of this thread!

First and foremost, what you describe as "mental asset" is that it is a person who "knows the truth" but does not "believe the truth". J. Warner Wallace, a cold-case homicide detective and apologist says the process has to go from believing 'that' to believing 'in'. The example he gives in his book titled "Cold-Case Christianity" is that every police officer wearing a bulletproof vest has belief 'that' the vest will save them, but they have to go from believing 'that' the vest will save them to believing 'in' the vest and sometimes this doesn't happen until an officer is actually fired upon by someone shooting at them. At this point it is due to their training 'that' the vest will save them to believing 'in' the vest saving them.

I believe this distinction is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The question is really, "how do I know I am saved?" To this I would say the mechanism for belief 'that' to believing 'in' regarding salvation is a condition of the heart most notably demonstrated by a repentant heart. If you see your NEED for salvation and you come to Jesus in repentance, that is, to turn away from your old life to look to the cross for your new life, that this is how God saves.

From Jesus:

Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

From Paul:

Philippians 3:8-11 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

So, if one were to examine themselves appropriately and found that they were not a true believer, but rather was operating from this 'mental assent', how would this person go about acquiring saving faith?

True believe is shown by what lives in the heart for real. Faith in God's love we need to exercise before it will produce fruit.

A living faith happens when you know how much you need to be saved and then call upon the Lord Jesus to be saved, and then to trust that you are because He keeps His word.

Intellectual faith is always a danger to us so we need to loose all we knew to gain what we didn't know. The New Jerusalem coming down from Heaven happens in all those lives where Christ renews their minds with the truth of His love.

So if you sincerely want to know God, then trust His word to be true and begin to call upon His name. Bring Him all your loveless coldness and uncaringness with regards to Him, and let Him change your mind.

For me the turning point was praying psalm 51 with all of my heart and understanding that if God could forgive David his sins He would forgive me my sins if i pleaded on the blood of Christ. Since then i have learned to read the word with my heart and see what lives inside of me because of it. Unbelievable what a uproar did the word of God cause in my heart when He was revealed to me.

Oh the things that have changed in my heart since that day i prayed with all my heart. i'm in love with Him, He is my Refuge and my King, and my best Friend, and my Lord and God, all at the same time. He lives in my heart as the Living Word and nothing can beat His love. No wonder for He is the the truth of love Himself.

And the changes from a religious person to a person with faith in His love is incredible for serving God is on the foreground in my life. Every day love for Him grows deeper and stronger, every day He teaches me. He has so much to share with us. His Word never returns empty to me but always achieves what He send it for.

i want to encourage you to seek Him out today. Confess your sins and shortcomings to Him and ask Him to change you. Make it a habit to always consult the word about every decision you make and trust Him to be true and faithful as He says He is.

Faith grows by using it. The more you exercise faith in His love the more you will love Him and neighbour, that is how you know He grows in you when His love and His truth grows in your heart and He begins to serve you as you serve Him. He is the Best Servant of us all.

Peace

This is what happened to me in my religious self when the word was revealed within me as being Alive.

Zion Descending

At first I heard Dad say,
"Son let us make tracks,
its near getting dark now,
the chosen are all asleep,
now would be best,
as darkness reigns its peak,
for arrogance has him blinded,
to what is really going on."

I saw the sunlight darkened,
the moon turn to blood,
and the stars falling from Heaven.
I felt everything shaking in its boots.
I heard about wars and rumours of wars.
I experienced famine and drought,
grand scale living in wantonness,
rulers making a living out of sin,
Satan's forces installed everywhere,
loveless forces ruling untruthfully.

I heard my inner world crying out in her dying pain,
"What is going on?
The Father is leaving us without the Son,
this can only evil mean."
I heard the angels blow the trumpets!
"Woe to the inhabitants of this soul!"

I heard the agonising cries,
coming from underneath the altar,
the dead in God's love, longingly,
awaiting newness of life!
"Yes, oh Lord, pour out their blood as they did ours!"

I heard the thunders rolling throughout my being,
"Let evil brood fear The Truth of God almighty!
Let judgement begin in The House of God!"

I knew judgement had already began,
when I beheld those massive hails stones,
tumbling down on the heads of the wicked.
I watched my enemies flee in terror!
Scorpion stings burning wrong,
horse hooves kicking up dirt,
truthfulness uncovering shame,
honesty baring nakedness,
the dung of the earth warring,
lies sores causing agony,
pestilence threatening,
as grasshoppers devoured,
my enemies food and good life!

It was fascinating to see,
how weak those are...,
.....so strong in lies!

Yes, honest!
Loving truth is like that!
The freedom to be,
true to yourself,
both in good and bad,
in His love to be.

Oh the release of faith!
Heart rendering awe!
Shouts of glorious praise!
Jumping joy - pure ecstasy!
Glorying in God almighty,
my life's tormentors died,
perishing one after the other.

Seeing Jesus on His white horse,
a blazing sword coming out of His mouth,
His all conquering loving truth
my inner world of being to reap.
Casting dead what is so good to have gone,
raising alive that which I had lost,
bringing new life at each dawn,
His kingdom ruling my world of being,
His presence bringing rest and peace.

Time and again He comes past like this,
(terrorising the wicked agonising their mates demise,)
as all His wheels turn into place.
The Word alive in heavenly love.
Costly gifts descending from above.
beholding the temple of the most high,
the truth of His love Himself my Zion.

This mental asset is just a false attack on the path God has given people to receive Eternal Life.

A person either believes the evidence that Jesus is the promised Messiah from the prophecies of the Tanakh and trust in the Messiah for Gods free gift of Eternal Life or they look to some other way. Or they simply do not believe.

The bible says "The LORD knows those who are His". The line between agreement and salvation is a faded one, on one of us without a thorough investigation of one's life or motives could ever know for sure if a person had saving faith.

I had a mental assent to faith for many years. But it was only one night that God sent me a dream about hell, that I wised up and started wholeheartedly following God. But even then I failed, and drifted from faith for many years, our believing can go up and down, ultimately God, and how we respond to Him are responsible for our salvation.

The bible says:

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Christianity is a continual path of keeping Jesus words. In order for the Father to make his home with us, we must be making an effort to live as He requires. We can't just have a carefree attitude, we need an attitude of adherence to God's words.

Prayer and almsgiving. Be intentful at both. Rote prayers are very helpful for this. Try starting with the Lord's Prayer (which is there to teach you how to pray) and try to schedule to say the Lord's prayer in the morning and in the evening.

Pray.

Mark 9:23-24

23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

Hello @Firearms, this will not answer your OP's question directly, but I believe it that you may find it useful.

The Protestant Reformers were careful to outline the Biblical definition of faith in their writings. They believed that faith is far more than a casual acceptance of who Jesus is, and that it can be seen in/will be demonstrated by one who is truly saved, because true faith always leads to/results in a changed life.

The Protestant Reformers also recognized that Biblical (saving) faith has three essential aspects: notitia, assensus, and fiducia, and here's how these aspects were concisely defined for us in Tabletalk Magazine a few years back.

Notitia. Notitia refers to the content of faith, or those things that we believe. We place our faith in something, or more appropriately, someone. In order to believe, we must know something about that someone, who is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Assensus. Assensus is our conviction that the content of our faith is true. You can know about the Christian faith and yet believe that it is not true. Genuine faith says that the content — the notitia taught by Holy Scripture — is true.

Fiducia. Fiducia refers to personal trust and reliance. Knowing and believing the content of the Christian faith is not enough, for even demons can do that (James 2:19). Faith is only effectual if, knowing about and assenting to the claims of Jesus, one personally trusts in Him alone for salvation.

They would need to recognize the depth of their sin and depravity, look to Christ crucified and risen for forgiveness of their sin, embrace Jesus as their only hope of salvation, and receive the new birth (which comes with a new heart).

you have to 'come to the end of yourself'; you have to reach a point in your life where you recognize that you simply aren't smart enough and don't have access to enough knowledge to know exactly what to do in any situation, and never will through your intellect/knowledge/experience/5 senses/etc. - in other words, without the leading and guidance of God; you have to come to the realization that you are a failure at living life when you make your own decisions, every time.
you surrender your life to God in recognition that you need the direction and guidance of the Almighty, All-knowing, One True Creator God; you make Him Lord as well as Savior; you set your heart to know what He's said to you through the written words of the Bible as interpreted by His Holy Spirit inside you so that you can recognize the leading of the His Holy Spirit inside you in the decisions you have to make in life, from what shirt to wear to how to receive a miracle. when you lose faith in yourself and turn to Him as your Lord, you begin to use His faith which He gave you when you received spiritual rebirth; for faith is believing God regardless of every and all other reports. you begin to say what He says about you rather than how you feel, or what your intellect or circumstances tell you; you find His Words of life in your mouth instead of your own. you begin to depend on Him as a little child blindly depends on their parents. it's true freedom Brother; and the lack of pressure from deciding what to do by yourself is like a giant stone having been lifted off your chest, and finally being able to breathe deep and free in His love for you - that's when you know you have true faith, when all of your faith is exclusively in Him.

Examining then where they have replaced the role of God with the bible and work on disciplines and trust exercises with God to fill in that gap.

Some times intellectual assent faith (or faith in the bible) slowly creeps in and replaces faith in God.

Mere "mental assent" belief says I believe that the death, burial and resurrection of Christ "happened." Saving belief/faith says I trust in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as the ALL-sufficient means of my salvation. (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4) One must go from believing in their head to believing in their heart. (Romans 10:9,10) If one is not a true believer, then one needs to repent and believe the gospel.
