True.

That's what happened with one of my aunts and my grandma. She used to punch her children in the face.. until one of my aunts got older and was able to fight back. My mother said my grandmother was shocked when she was hit and never laid a finger on her again.

Good for her.

Kids can fight back in other ways. For example, my cousin's 4 year old was ticked at how he was treated, so he peed all over the clean laundry one day. Let's not forget passive aggressive behavior. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to break one of your collectibles. Also, there comes a time in every parent's life where they are completely vulnerable. A kid with a bat might bring a sleeping parent to receive a blow that leaves them unable to ever hit with that arm again. What is a parent going to do? Hit the kid again? Eventually it comes to light that the parent is an abuser.

I guess I should give my take since I made the thread and didn't post my opinion in the OP.

We're made in the image of God. The Lord has to chasten us sometimes, so it's par for the course that we should chasten our own children. It does depend on the child though. Some may not need it as much as others. And it depends on the infractions they are doing. Besides the book of Proverbs talks about not sparing the rod, etc. So there's that too.

My parents were zealous for God but it wasn't of the Spirit. As a child, I was inspired by their passion for the Lord but couldn't understand why they would mistreat me so much and never loved or cared for me as they ought to. They DID their best but still, I was beaten, mocked, and bullied for no reason. I wanted to die but I drew closer to God because of all that pain and suffering. And because of the fear of the Lord, my love and unto obedience for Him, I just kept obeying and honoring my parents as commanded for children to do. God healed me from all that and I forgave them. I'm not a child anymore to obey and honor them if they are disobedient to God. They get to face the consequence of their wrongs and they shall learn and change. God has humbled them and things have been settled. I love them and thankful to them but it's not possible to have a close bond of a parent and child once those precious tender years are gone in turmoil.

I’m sorry to hear you were treated poorly GospelS. Your love for the Lord is evident. That’s definitely His doing in spite of their mishandling.

You raised an important point. Parental behavior significantly impacts the adult-child relationship. My daughter and I are very close. She listens to my input and wasn’t a rebellious child. I loved and respected her.

I didn’t believe in blind obedience. God tells us why His ways are best and I did the same. And I was honest about my mistakes. We walked through the experiences and lessons and did the same with hers. Character was my emphasis and I employ similar strategies today as she prepares for marriage and family.

Parents are God’s instruments and ought to handle the precious souls He’s entrusted with love and care.

Yours in His Service,

~Bella

Praise be to God. He lifted me up in the due season like He did Joseph through whom God rescued his family, Jacob and his brothers, when famine hit them.
