From the "Whose memory you gonna trust?" files: Biden questions ‘memory’ of voters in poll who say they’re better off now than 4 years ago

A recent Gallup poll taken Sept. 14-28 made headlines after it revealed that 56 percent of voters said they were better off now than they were four years ago. Just 32 percent of them said they were worse off.
...
"American people believe they're better off economically today than they were under our administration? Well, their memory is not very good, quite frankly," Biden told Inskeep
.
I question their memories also. Of course, a lot of these people prove to me they have terrible memories when they try telling me they remember that Obama put us into a recession instead of guiding us out of the recession (which was actually started by George W Bush)

I'd suggest:
1) There are a few industries and people who are doing much better (The Daily Show had a GREAT interview with a debt collector to prove that point) but perhaps there are other industries....(somehwere?) that are also improving. Farming? Steal? Coal?
These seemed to be big targets for Trump and he worked HARD to sway the people who worked those jobs. How are those industries doing?

2) So long as the government takes less taxes, some folks will say they are doing better.

Once a family or country starts living off credit it is hard to stop
US CAB deficit to 2018 wi Presidents.png
GWB was the worst but most blame Reagan for starting the living off credit tradition with his - live it up, the dollar is strong, we still have assets to sell off - basically 'eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die'.

And that says so much because Trumps term included the riots and pandemic. Think how they would feel had those hold ups not arisen.

"American people believe they're better off economically today than they were under our administration? Well, their memory is not very good, quite frankly," Biden told Inskeep.

How ironic Biden is questioning the memory of others.

I used to work in live event production (an industry that's always working) and moved into video games (an industry that's historically volatile) about a decade ago. The pandemic has flipped that all on its head. Video games are doing great while all of the concerts and conventions are shut down at least until next year.

I'm better off, financially, than 4 years ago.

Yeah, same. Thanks, low-information voters for voting against your own best interests. Too bad about your jobs and health care, though, tough luck on that one. Thoughts and prayers.

I suppose it depends on what you consider to be "better off". Personally, I'm doing better financially than I was in 2016 thanks to a new job. However, mentally and physically, not so much.

In 2016 I had a job using my college degree and language skills at a multinational company making $82,000 a year.

Today I work at Wal-Mart making $12 an hour using my arms, legs, and back.

I think I am better off today than I was in 2016.

Back to the subject of the OP. You'll notice actually another gaffe by Biden with this. When he answered the question he repeated it back as 54% not 56. So what is it? That he's not very good at keeping in the know of current news? That he not very good at hearing the reporter? If you listen to the clip couldn't we say he was pretty clear? How do you get 56% to turn into 54?

Here is an entire compilation of many, many gaffes made by Trump:

So what is it? Is he ignorant of simple facts? Is he uneducated? Is his mind going? Is it that he's not very good at keeping in the know of current news? That he not very good at hearing the reporter? If you listen to the clip couldn't we say he was pretty clear? How can he not know the simplest things? How can he say such inane, ignorant things?

[No need to answer to this post - whatever your excuses were for Trump, use the same excuses applied for Biden's one gaffe that you harped on]

I don't know who all these ordinary people are who are supposedly struggling since Trump. The entire world is struggling in some aspect due to the coronavirus; that certainly isn't unique to the United States or this president. I'm someone with no college education who works a manufacturing job operating machinery. I know that I now make more money than I ever have before and I see more money on my checks due to Trump's tax cuts. I work alongside mostly Mexican people who speak little English and several black people. We all seem to be doing just fine.

The notion of "best interests" in these discussions has to expand beyond mere material concerns. People are voting for what they perceive to be their best interests, but that perception is weighted much more heavily towards a fuzzier sense of identity and status.

I believe the argument is including the impacts of covid. There are entire industries completely shut down and others hanging on by a thread. Had the pandemic been managed better, the damage could've been reduced.

That's great if you measure your "success" and how well you're doing in terms of dollars and cents. For many of us, though, there is more to life than mammon/money.

And if the Dems were in power you might have had a lot more?
Let's run with the "well, I guess even more people could have died during the pandemic, who knows?" as a Trump campaign slogan. I'm sure it'll poll particularly well with seniors.

I would have added "economic", but if Donald's to be believed there's also now the ever present threat of the incumbent's failures leading to their small town being overrun by black people or antifa, so I'm not sure how to categorize them.

Me, too. Although i can pretty much say that about any 4 year span in the last 20 years.
That's the point of life. You keep getting richer and then you die.
