Social media mocks 'uneducated' outrage over Israeli Gal Gadot being cast as Cleopatra | Daily Mail Online

"Israeli actress Gal Gadot has been slammed on social media after she was cast to play Cleopatra in the upcoming historical epic about the iconic Egyptian queen.

The casting however, immediately drew outrage from confused social media users who wrongly assumed Cleopatra was black and North African."

The Egyptians, before the Islamic invasion in 639 AD, were a Mediterranean people.

woke
The act of being very pretentious about how much you care about a social issue
Urban Dictionary: woke

I think it is very ironic that 3000 years after Moses led the Hebrews out of Egypt, a Hebrew descendant is returning to sit on the throne of Egypt.

Some people do seem to think that ancient Egyptians were black, both due to the rise of black nationalist pseudohistory as well as misunderstanding Egyptian iconography and art.

The direct descendents of Egyptians are still alive today, they are called Copts. Omar Sharif is a famous example of someone who was from the Egyptian Coptic community (he converted to Islam to marry another Egyptian actress in his first marriage).

Of course, Egyptians did at times intermarry with other African peoples, such as Nubians, but they were not descended from Bantu peoples, as most blacks in the US or sub-Saharan African are.

Given that the Hebrews never sat on the Egyptian throne, and the Hebrew in question is playing an Egyptian queen of a long dead empire, I find your misuse of irony...what's the word I am looking for...oh yes, pretentious.

She'll make an excellent Cleopatra

We had an Egyptian pastor and held a conference that included Copts from Egypt. They flew in. The pastor and I are the same hue. I'm a woman of color with red undertones. My skin is light brown. He had an olive complexion as did the visitors. I don't.

This is the pastor. I can tell he isn't Black. In spite of his features and skin tone. But I can see how he can be mistaken for mulatto.

Whether one believes in Darwin or in God, all mankind comes from a single source on Earth. DNA testing has been a real eye opener for who we really are, especially those that think they are pure Aryan.

"As you noted, there have been several studies showing that DNA results of many African Americans indicate that they have between 20 and 30 percent European ancestry. These results reflect the fact that many slave owners fathered children by their slaves. DNA tests also show that the opposite of this scenario can be true: Those who identify as primarily white can have African ancestry. 23andMe published a study (pdf) based on its own dataset that concluded that approximately 3 to 4 percent of their customers who identified as being of primarily European descent had at least one ancestor in the last 10 generations who could be traced back to Africa."
Do Most Whites Have Traces of African DNA, as I Do?

Harvard Scientists Studied the DNA of White People, and Found Something Truly Surprising

As for myself, Ancestry says I have 7% African DNA. Several years ago I learned I had a black slave ancestor, Hester Anderson, a freed slave and her common-law husband, who was a slave in Norfolk Co, VA.

ETA: This is how a woman of color with my hue and cool undertones will look. Just an FYI. :)

Cleopatra was ethnically Macedonian Greek from the line of Ptolemy.

This is an overreaction, based upon years of European actors/actresses playing in roles that, historically, would have been more authentic with a person of color in the role.

If you look at the evidence left by the Egyptians, you see that they were multifaceted in their heritages.

Hiroglyphics show a mixture of people of all hues, light to dark, and the sphinx commonly show more African features.

Which is exactly what you'd expect, given that Egypt is a part of Middle East nexus of the 3 continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa ...

Hardly surprising. Just think how many people think Jesus looked like your average Caucasian with blue eyes despite being born in the Middle East.

And yes as mentioned he could have looked like that since genetics are funny but likely not.

I believe the anthropologists generally think 'the Egyptians' then as now are a very mixed population compared to modern 'racial categories'. But Grasping is exactly right that Cleopatra was part of the Ptolemaic dynasty installed by Alexander the Great as the rulers of Egypt.

"Scholars identify Cleopatra as essentially of Greek ancestry with some Persian and Syrian ancestry, based on the fact that her Macedonian Greek family (the Ptolemaic dynasty) had intermingled with the Seleucid aristocracy of the time."

If your family comes from the southern US, that isn't very rare at all.

23andme was amusing (and enlightening) for me because I discovered I had a small percentage of Italian ancestry, even though I was told my family was primarily British, French, and German. My guess is that is due to a Hugenot ancestor I had, some of whom had intermarried with older Waldensians from Italy who moved northward during the Reformation.

All human beings alive on earth today are descended from closely related hominids, however it's not uncommon to have a small percentage of DNA from other, closely related species, such as Neanderthals.

So Ms. Gadot is close enough.

I remember being surprised I had 1% northern African DNA and like 1% southeast Asian DNA. Although the rest was pretty much northern European with like 1-2% southern European.

A guy from Africa actually said I was a "brother" because of this and he looked pretty serious and wasn't kidding. Lol.
