Like the prophets who came before Him, Jesus spoke ‘early and often’ to the people of Jerusalem. At times He addressed a particular class of men, i.e. ‘scribes and Pharisees’.
He also addressed all the people of Jerusalem using the expression “This Generation”.
Jesus was speaking to the generation that would not pass away until His prophecy
of destruction for the Temple and Jerusalem was fulfilled.
Luke 7:31-35. And the Lord said, To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned for you, And you did not weep.
Luke 11:29-32. And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say,
“This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will
be to this generation.
Luke 11:49-51. Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute, that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple.
Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.
Luke 17:22-25. Then He said to the disciples, The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. And they will say to you, Look here! or Look there! Do not go after them or follow them. For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
Do you not understand the judgment that generation endured? ALL THE BLOOD
of the righteous, from Abel!
